Alternaters: Don't buy rebuilt!!!!

OK....I have now replaced my alternater for the 4th time in 5 years. Sure you get a free replacement for the 100 bucks you spent, but they are crap parts. So this time I spent the extra dough and bought a brand new Delco- Remmy. You know the ones that go 8+ years without any problems?!?! I hope this one goes much longer than the last 4 combined....8 volts after 11 months is just plain unexceptable. The one before it had 12 volts after 4 months. Thanks alot NAPA!!! I'm staying with Carquest and AC Delco for now on.

OK RANT OVER WITH

NAPA has junk alt, starters, and batterys. If your NAPA offers wilson brand reman'd starters and altenators, then they are worth buying... but not there normal ones, they totally suck.

You're waaaayyy better off (IMO) to go to a reputable auto electric shop and have your alternator rebuilt. Costs less than half of a "rebuilt" alt from a parts store and I've not worn one out yet.

Here’s my take. Don’t buy rebuilt, but having yours rebuilt instead is ok. Or New always works too.

I agree. Never had a problem with the place I take my alternators/starters to. iluvmy72 problem sounds more like a wiring problem that's causing the alternator to burn out quickly than the rebuilds them self. That or you're using a dead battery and trying to get your alternator to charge it.

Re: Alternaters: Don't buy rebuilt!!!!

Reman'd alternators from any parts store or reman'd alternators from a local alt shop can give you trouble if they do not use the best of parts. Thing is most everybody these days are looking for the cheap price and expecting the best service. All parts stores and alt shops are offering the cheap stuff cause it sells better and have the upper grade if you ask for it.
Also worth pointing out is some guys use alternators with too small an amp output to keep up with the power demand of the vehicle and all the extras, radio, amps, air pumps, etc. Too much demand on a small output alt will definately shorten the life of it.

Re: Alternaters: Don't buy rebuilt!!!!

just pulled the alternator off my dads truck a 170k miles on his 1973 3/4 ton. Then again it wast the heaviest truck you could orer (special heavy duty front and rear). And tis been treated like a show truck for the last 140k miles of its life. Even though its body makes it look like a junker, its one hell of an old work truck.

Re: Alternaters: Don't buy rebuilt!!!!

I use alternatiors and starters from oreillys. They have 3 grades a cheap line, a good rebuilt line and new line. I only use the good line and havent had any problems with there starters or alternators. Just my experiance.

Re: Alternaters: Don't buy rebuilt!!!!

luckily, these alternators are easy to replace if you do cheap out like me and buy the budget alternators. it's a bit more of an issue when you have to pull fan and radiator to get at a v6 honda alt (which was one of the only american parts on the engine, and coincidentally the only part to wear out at 50k)

Re: Alternaters: Don't buy rebuilt!!!!

It's a scam, the lifetime warranty at AZ. I got suckered into thinking they must be real good units to have that LT warrantee, but it's just the opposite apparently. The things are so cheap they can afford to replace them 4 or 5 times and still make money.
