Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

After much preperation we jumped on it with the help of Joe, a friend of Justin's.
The game plan was to remove the bed and cab (using the one man lift) and place them on the dollies we fabbed up. Then I went to work on installing the Tanks Walbro in tank pump into the aluminum tank. Justin & Joe worked on bending the 3/8" SS supply and return fuel lines. Oh, and I did get the tube straightener. Works like magic making coils straight as an arrow. Check out the pics.....

I LOVE this tool.....

Dollies ready to work!

Lift the bed. Could have used a longer boom....

Bed in place and easy to move....

Next comes the cab...

Hey, easy job with the right tool...Say, I heard this joke....

Now how do I make this bender work? Note: These lines are nearly 10' straight as a friggin arrow prior to bending

Meanwhile, no sweat for the old man to cut a 4.5" hole in this $500 gas tank.

More holes needed...

Joe taking a break while I'm working. Always clowning

Those guys did a pretty good job. Still need short lines fabbed for up and over the C notch, flare everything 37 degree and secure them to the frame with nice "made for you" clamps....

Final shot after clean-up. A good day's work...

Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

I went by there the other day to check up on these guys ....

I must say, the job they did on the fuel lines was AWESOME !!

Very nice, crisp quality bends !!

I was impressed. They used nice clamps, drilled and tapped the frame, to make that a nice and clean, sanitary install !!

Good Job Rich and Justin !!!!

Thank you for the kind words John....
We try to do our best.....

Now for an update....been busy with several things but let me show you the trailer hitch I just finished.

Started with this Draw Tite Service Body hitch (PN 41990) ordered from eTrailer. Rated at max trailer weight of 16,000 lbs and max tongue weight rating 1,600 lbs. Will I ever come close to using that? Hell no, but overkill doesn't hurt. The tube is 3" square with 1/4" wall. Can you say BEEF?
The stock metal is 3 1/2" wide 3/8" thick plate and 2" wide 1/4" & 3/8" plate

Been dying to use this Milwaukee 6190-20 cold saw which I purchased used a few months ago. A blade costs $135, OUCH! But let me tell you. She cut the 3" tube like BUTTA!!!!!!

After measuring twice and taking a deep breath I cut all the pieces....talk about a tight fit.....

So we tack weld it with my Miller 130 and off she goes to a shop for final welding. Comes back and we test fit it. Man, she's tight...

Next I drill the holes......5/8" and 7/16". Busted 4 Harbor Freight step drills....CHINA garbage.....

Fed up I go get a quality step drill to finish up, $35.....worth it

Back from powdercoat....WOW!
Note: 14 bolt cover leaked....best time to fix it is now.....All done

Final bolt up

The end of the hitch will will sit about 2" behind the tag in the rollpan. I'm using an extended (13.5") receiver to get the ball out and away from the rear.
This weekend when the bed goes back on we'll know for sure....Stay tuned....

Thanks for the compliment. BTW - I read your build thread and LOVE your truck. I think the color is great and makes me pause to consider it. Would be nice out here in Cali...Just wondering if a hint of pearl was added how it might come out????

OK, enough daydreaming....

More progress today....
Assembled and installed "Tanks" Walbro in-tank fuel pump and the sending unit. Added roll over vent valve. Touched up custom 2 piece driveshaft and installed. Went over all brake lines and fuel lines one more time to check they all are tight. And stepped back to look it all over, including that hitch with the receiver installed. Tomorrow the cab & bed go back on.

Thank you for the compliment!

Sunday report: Rolled chassis out into the light of day and took a few moments to admire. Let me tell you - a ton of people stopped to look at it and comment.

Bed & cab lift again pays for itself!

About the trailer hitch - perfect!

I like the hidden hitch. But where r u going to put the tag. I know that is no problem. If you can do what i see on your build it will not be. Nice rolling chassis also.

The plan is to use a fold up license plate bracket (like this) from the TruckShop to make it all tidy and clean. Simple

Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

I've used a Camaro/Firebird plate mount pulled from wrecking yard before ...

Looks similiar to above image.

I would recommend installing with it fliping up, rather than down ... for clearance, and to allow plate to still be viewed.

I've seen downward flips, and it is incorrect in IMO ...

On a different note, I was told ink is addictive, looks like Justin had got more ?

Also, you look like you've lost of weight, Rich. Good for You !!!

Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

Starting with 1/4" thick plate cut a piece for the DBW pedal. Drilled and tapped 2 - 1/4 20 holes. Tacked welded it to the firewall and did a test fit up. Seems good. Need to finish the welding on another day and clean it up some. Sure the brown around the welds means there's some contamination present.
Talked with guy (Dave working for 150 tunes in Spokane) doing wiring harness modification (thinning) to make sure he understands we have a 2003 LQ9 6.0 with 4L80E. We're cool. Gave me some good advice on my plan to use the stock AC compressor - basically to ditch it for a sanden. Will do that and get brackets to mount sanden in original low position. Save me some headaches.

Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

Okay, I know this project is dragging. Not trying to make this the slowest build ever but other things/events do occur. I'm happy to report we are making some progress. After watching that episode of "Trucks"where they swapped an LQ4 into a '71 C10 I immediately sent our harness out to 150 Tunes in Spokane to be thinned down. I mean, for $250 that is a killer price.
Been waiting patiently for it to return and today it arrived, 44 days after I sent it. I want to say that Dave, the guy who does this work for Wayne, is very cool and very helpful. Over that time he and I became buds exchanging emails. He gave me some real good tips and pointers.
One note: The original harness was from a 2003 Escalade with LQ9/4L65. My setup is LQ9/4L80E. no problem for Dave to configure it. So without further adiou here's the harness. And one additional little item I picked up is from Ironworks Kustoms in Bakersfield...I know many of you will like this *****in cool ECM bracket.....Gonna try to fit it up on firewall right behind the motor. If she looks good she'll be welding in place before going off to paint.

Re: PROJECT "Father/Son" C-20 Rolling Chassis Build

Life in itself takes its toll on us gearheads ....

Harness looks good, what a relief to have that out of the way, huh ?

I'm sure you've planned this already, but keep in mind AC and ECM placements.

GOOD WORK !

Thanks John...you know, sometimes the planets and stars do align and good things happen....
So today I also see this CL ad for an Old Air Fan setup specifically for this truck. So I jump on it right away tonight and snag it....

BTW - the sellers were this cool old couple with a phenomenal 69 shortbed C10
