my wife & I went to a combination car show/swap meet/auction yesterday & had a ball. then on the calendar of evevnts I saw about a burn-out contest going on in the evening. we hurried home to get truck & have some more fun. we brought our 6 year old son so he could see how much fun these can be. anyway I ended up just missing out on the finals because my truck is not loud enough.

but that may have been a good thing since the finals was for a 2 minute run instead of the 30 seconds previously run. all of this made me & son happy. wife got angry when she saw my tires & found out I now neede to replace them

does any one know a good way to keep this from happening in the future? NO, not doing the contest is not an option.

I have heard that you can put stuff on them, I have heard some say gear lube, it smokes like crazy and you can spin them a little slower to prolong the life a bit.
Tire shops always have throw-away tires, get your hands on some of those for burn-out contests.

And what better way to make the wife approve of this then to let her be behind the wheel during the next contest.

A friend had the same problem! I believe after extensive research the best conclusion was to leave the wife at home!

your gonna melt tires theres no way around it just get a real cheap set of tires or a set of used tires that wont matter when you decide to burn em off

I HAVE A SET OF 10" SLICKS , MOUNTED ON CHEVY TRUCK RIMS THAT I BOUGHT AT A SWAP MEET FOR $35. A LINE LOCK & A SET OF OLD SLICKS MAKE FOR A CHEAP, FUN BURNOUT CONTEST.

I buy my tires at pep-boys. They have the furtura super sport tires for $60 apiece. Not bad at all. I only have a "one wheel wonder" rear end so I don't think burnout contests would be something I'd have a chance at. But these tires smoke like a freight train and leave big beautiful black marks.
Is it preferable to have posi for these contests? If not I might just finish my tire off at one. Nothing like having the tire POP! for a grand finale.

it is an open diff. but the one got so hot that it started to make both spin

I am now on the hunt for a set of 4 stock wheels & scab tires for the next time

I heard bleach worked also, id probably drop the air pressure a lil bit also, prob down to about 14-18lbs, I could be wrong, just thinking about the hot air inside the tire expanding, some good used bias ply tires, might do good, again I could be wrong

I agree, just put some scabs on for next year, the wider the better, and do air them down to about 25 psi.

Just get hooked up with some USED meats, and use bleach too! bleach burn outs are nice 'n smokey.....Yeah posi is better for a burnout "contest" - especially if its a real contest

Next show, once ya got the bleach and old tires....'burn'm down to the cords!

I'm not sure if I am going to do it again. turns out at the 20 second time the squeal/screech I heard was the spider gears starting to bind up.

now I have to go through the diff

oh yeah, the wife will love to hear that

good news though, the motor & trans that I did my self are strong & had no problems at all

BAD NEWS lost pics in camera due to human error.

please dont ask what happened

When you burn out with a non posi you will destroy shims and spider gears since they are being spun fast with little lube. They get nice and hot and yours may be blue by now. The reason your other tire started to spin was because the spider gears were probably starting to seize together or at least were grabbing due to lack of enough oil. If you have posi it wont hurt anything to do long burn outs. I have done 150 foot burn oputs with non posis but it gets lubed better if both wheels are moving a little. Besides, posi is so much more fun doing smoky donuts, lol.
