454 Carb Swap

I'm putting a 454 in my 1994 GMC Sierra 1500. The 454 manifold has a casting date of 1986. I've got it stripped down ready to pull from the truck it is in now (89 Chevy 1500) I took the TBI off and since it is an older manifold I can put a carb on it.

Question is, what is a good bolt on carb? I have no issues getting an adapter. I'm not looking for an all out Hot Rod, fuel economy really isn't my concern either. Just a fun truck to drive now and then without all the computer BS.

I have an HEI, and headers, just need a 4 barrel. So what carb?

Thanks

I ran a 600 Edelbrock and worked great. Stock or very mild cam, headers and stock intake. What are you gonna run for a tranny? Your truck has a 4L60 which is electronically controlled, bypassing the computer won't control it, so would shift at all.

Re: 454 Carb Swap

Edelbrocks are great for in the ballpark tuning from my experience, I've never had luck really getting them dialed in. Holley's are great. Demon's were a bad experience for me, and then it was stolen off my truck before I got it sorted, so not a huge fan of them although they look great. Qjets were oem for a reason, they can be tuned to the Nth degree.

My vote is for a Qjet. Easy to find and always fun when those big secondary's open up....

Re: 454 Carb Swap

On my tall block .040 over 427 with a summit rv cam in my k3500 I run a Holley 080550 650 spread bore carb. Out of the hole with 8500 lb trailer she"ll break the duals loose, averages 11mpg towing if we behave and no problem keeping up with 75-80 mph traffic on the hwy.
080550 Holley or good Qjet is my vote

Re: 454 Carb Swap

My vote is a 600-650 vacuum secondary carb.

I would get one custom built or rebuilt by a local expert.

Sixball,
I'm running a 454 in my 56 and I went with an Edelbrock 600. I also have a turbo 400. Little to no adjustment and it runs great.
