Bought an original 1971 Chevy SWB 2wd

I have been trying to buy this truck from a family friend since 1990, he finally called me out of the blue and sold it to me. It has been tucked away in his garage since 1986, took us 6 hours to get her out of hibernation and loaded. It's all original paint and interior, it was the city of West Helena, Arkansas Parks Department truck from new till 1986 when it was bought by my friend. It seems strange to me that it has white interior and A/C beings it was a city truck, it even has a sticker in the upper left side of tailgate stating that it has disc brakes [front only obviously] never seen that before, I'm just amazed at how original this beauty is, can't wait to see what the future holds for this beauty!! Good score. All 71's had the "Disc Brake" sticker on the tailgate. First year, one year only. Boog, (board member here) may remember that truck.

Re: Bought an original 1971 Chevy SWB 2wd

The SPID is the first pic posted, also who is this BOOG?? How awesome would that be if he knows of this truck as a city vehicle. I found a West Helena golf course score card under the seat and it had 2 guys names written in it, Tim and Steve!! I'm assuming that's who drove this baby in the beginning. Thanks for comments everyone!!

Boog is a fellow member here from that area. Very likely he would have taken notice of it.

That is a great truck! I'll bet they bought that truck off the lot. Maybe end of year sell to local municipality cheap kind of deal. CST, a/c, V8, Parchment interior, door edge guards. Not your typical gov't purchase. Usually these type trucks would be all the same fleet color maintained throughout the model years. These days it's save a few pennies and get all white trucks. Parks depts. usually got Dark Green or Tan. It would be interesting to know it's full history from purchase

What a great project truck! With the in the bed spare did it say side mount? I would have thought that meant stepside. Either way, great truck.

What a great find. That SPID is a piece of work all by itself.
Keep the forum posted on progress. You've got a truck that many of us hope to find, and never do.

Re: Bought an original 1971 Chevy SWB 2wd

Oh man. You snagged one from my home town. I was born there but left in ‘91. I can’t say I remember that particular truck. There may have been two small parks back then. If it was bought new it most likely came from West-Horner Chevrolet in Helena. I believe they lost their dealership back when GM was in trouble and taking a gov bailout and yanking franchises. I see the rear bumper is missing and most trucks back then had a white dealer installed bumper with their name on them. It’s great that it has been stored inside all these years. Looks like you got a good one. Take good care of it will ya?

My wife and I play at course sometimes. That is when we can't play at our club. I live about 35 miles from there. I think I have a bumper from west Horner from Helena. I have a 70 short red and white that was bought there by my local school district in 1970
