What thermostat?

I recently completed my swap and got it started without any problems, or so I thought. This morning I see coolant on the floor, maybe a cup fulls worth. Can't tell where but it seems to be under the water pump more on the thermostat side. The 08 5.3 only has 69,000kms and has never been apart. I should pull the water pump and put new gaskets in and maybe put a thermostat in while I'm at it. Looks like a stock thermostat is 187 degrees. Should I go stock or cooler? Longest I ran it was 15 minutes so it never quite got up to full temp and I haven't had the fan kick in yet.

Re: What thermostat?

if you are going to pull the water pump than please replace it with a brand new one, also a great time to do belt, tensioner, and idler

keep the stock 187* F thermostat

Re: What thermostat?

Did you spill any when adding? I do all the time so I gotta remember to clean it before hunting down leaks.

Re: What thermostat?

I would be shocked if the water pump or thermostat o-ring gaskets would be leaking at such low miles. Maybe the shaft seal on the water but again I would be surprised. How about your steam cross over tube? Not knowing how it's plumbed on your set up is it just a rubber hose from the tube to the radiator? Maybe a loose hose clamp. Or a loose heater hose clamp?

Re: What thermostat?

I’m going to replace my clamps and check closer for leaks before I do anything else. I saw no leaks while idling 15 minutes or right after shutting off but found coolant on the floor the next morning.

Re: What thermostat?

+1 more for the stock thermostat temp.

Did you burp the system? How did you fill the coolant?

Easiest way is to fill the engine from the top radiator hose, helps get most of the air out.

Re: What thermostat?

Found where it was leaking. I had cheated and put a hose on that was too big on the thermostat side. Tried to double clamp it but it didn’t work. I bought a proper fitting hose and solved the leak. Outlawdrifter I filled the engine through the upper hose.
