Are those Dragons Breath?

My dad had a triple bypass when he was in his 50's. He was overweight and also had diabetes. He had a stroke and a few heart attacks. The last one got him.
He tried to watch his diet. But the guy liked to eat. Even my mother's lousy cooking. She hates to cook and it showed in the food. She's almost 90 now and I don't think she owns a pot or pan anymore. Probably a good thing. I remember the garbage she would make.

I remember sitting at the table with some horror show in front of me. I wouldn't eat it and she told me that I couldn't leave the table until I cleaned my plate. I tried to give it to the dog when she wasn't looking. And the dog wouldn't eat it.

I've got a jar of that! It's good stuff.

My wife and I are actually thinking hard about moving to New Mexico when she retires. I need to get out of California. Not just because of the warrants.

Talk to me BEFORE making any definite plans for relocating to NM. I'll share the positives and minuses. My wife pines for a move back to Orange Co where she grew up but I don't realistically believe that will happen.

Re: Hot Food

When we had Gearhead Gourmet (pronounce the 't') I started a thread, "Hot Sauce Swap", with the idea we swap local sauces among ourselves. You send me one and I send you one. It never went anywhere, but I did make a swap for some Scott's Sauce with a member from NC. Mmmm Good!

Also, maybe from GG (see above), for some reason I sent a member in CA a box with local apple cider and other good from McCutcheons. I think we were just talking about cider or some other food and I asked for his address to surprise him.

I think it's time to try the sauce swap again.

I went all day yesterday without hot sauce. It can be done! I ate my chicken fajitas sauceless. Of course, I always put extra shakes of Cayenne and chili powder. I also use this Chili Lime seasoning added in. But the food doesn't come off as spicy hot, just spicy. Spicy = Flavor. There is spicy and there is hot & spicy. I'm glad my gut likes all this stuff. For all those who can't understand how people can enjoy hot sauces, it's real simple. We are all different. Maybe you've heard the saying, "We all have different tastes". This is where the literal meaning of that comes from. I am not a picky eater at all. Not much I won't eat

Any mustard fans? My German mother in law has shared some tasty examples with me. Way better than French’s yellow mustard.

Re: Hot Food

I'm a fan of mustard. That's why I bought the '71 Custom Camper I had. It was mustard yellow . These days people, at least us guys, go by the GM names for the colors, but back in the day people called Ochre trucks mustard Yellow all the time. But back to food, yes I love mustard. I keep a one tray on the refrigerator door for just mustard and one for just hot sauce.

I was thinking... yes me. I may like my spicy foods, but you won't see me shaking salt on anything. There used to be just a few things I felt still needed just a shake or two on, like eggs (with black pepper of course). But I don't salt eggs any more. I use hot sauce.

Re: Hot Food

Hard boiled eggs MUST have salt. It's the law.

Deviled eggs no salt... Cayenne pepper.

One thing That I don't put any kind of sauce on is tamales. Just black pepper. And lots of it.

I had a friend that would pour salt on everything. He would salt pepperoni pizza.

Re: Hot Food

Here’s a few good examples to look for...I’ve tried them all good. For corn dogs typical French’s is tough to beat but the sweet (Bavarian) German styles work well too.

Black pepper is not hot, and I don't eat near as much biscuits and gravy as I once did, but when I do, I drown it in black pepper. I always get teased about liking a little biscuits and gravy with my pepper.

I fry my burger patties in plain yellow mustard it gives them a real good flavor.

Mustard is a must on corn dogs. Although I have put ketchup on them and it was really good. BBQ sauce too.

I put mustard and ketchup on french fries. I've been doing it for years and have never seen anyone else do it that way.

I don't eat a lot of ham sandwiches or a lot of ham at all for that matter. It's not that I dislike it. It's okay. But it's just okay. My wife loves ham so I eat more now than I normally would. She's always giving me the sales pitch on how yummy it is....yeah right.

I eat bologna now. I wouldn't go near it for years. But I went into a Subway and it was really busy. Someone must have called in sick because there was only just this one kid running around like a chicken with his head cut off and he put bologna on my sandwich. My fault. I should have said something and he was so busy that I didn't have the heart to tell him to change it. But it turned out that I really liked it. Then for the first time in my life I even bought some bologna from the deli. (I still wont eat the cheap stuff) It's funny how your taste can change over time. Like when I was a kid I loved SPAM. I bought a can a few years ago.And it was disgusting. I don't care what they say in Hawaii. That stuff is gross.

Re: Hot Food

Every day of my married life there has been bologna in my refrigerator, but I don't, won't, will not, eat it.

When I was about ten years old I went to work with my dad and had bologna sandwiches. I got horribly sick that afternoon and it all came up, and I haven't been able to eat the stuff since.

Now you give me Spam, and I am happy. Mostly fried on a sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes, and I will have mayo with that please.

Spam? Hawaii? Guess where I am right now...

Spam velveeta and onions through a sausage grinder onto hot dog buns then wrapped in foil and toasted - yummy.

Let me guess. That's not Wisconsin is it?

That sausage grinder recipe does sound good. I may have to think again about Spam. I never thought of running it through a grinder. and I've got one. Hmmm (As he scratches his beard).
Nice shirt too.

Do you do like I do and unscrew the cap, dump in palm and shake on the food?

It's true. With all the fantastic varieties of mustard there are the few things that demand French's Crayola Yellow Mustard. That's when I use Woebler's Jalapeno Mustard!! Come to think of it, I do keep a small thing of straight up yellow for those who don't do hot.

I just ordered some of this stuff. We'll see how it goes over.

The Professor Phardtpounders is a Caribbean mustard based sauce. The rocket fuel is a Jamaican jerk sauce.

This is going to be interesting. I'm sure that they'll love it.

No bologna keeps you an honest man . I'm not sure my mom ever gave me Spam, and I know I haven't had it out on my own. I don't eat bologna, either, but I have had that fried and I liked that. W/mustard of course. My dad had a thing for Taylor Pork Roll. He was stationed at Lewes Beach, DE on the Delaware Bay for a while during WWII. That gets fried for a sandwich.

My buddy is from New Jersey. Or as he would say "Joisy" He's always stocked up on Taylor ham. And plenty of mustard.

This is the bologna that I get. I have them slice it super thin. It's not what I remember as a kid. And that's a good thing.

And mustard of course.
