Question cat or not that is the question

Ok, here goes.
I own a canadian chevy big 10 pickup, although the previous owner turned it into a gmc sierra classic a vin check told me it is really a chevy k model heavy duty.
I am getting conflicting results searching to find out if my big 10 from canada came with a cat from the factory...it's a 305 4bbl 4x4...from what I could find out canada did not adapt to the emission law until the 1897 model year and the big ten came without cats.
If anyone can shed some light on this subject I will be able to keep the little hair I have left on my head as my restoration/build comes to an end.
Thank you all,
Mark

From that year I would say everything would fall under the emission law! Sorry I couldn't resist! I would think that it wouldn't have had cat's, but I can't say 100%. How strict are the emissions up there? A lot of places here in the states don't really focus too much on the old trucks, just mainly on the newer ones.

Re: cat or not that is the question

was it made FOR Canada? if so it might not have cats. but if it was just made IN Canada, then it probably does. If it is a Big 10, IIRC the reason they did the big ten was to get around all the "junk" so it probably doesn't have one.

I bet if you call your State Police, or governing authority on the inspections, they would be the ones with the most accurate information, but you may not like thier answer.

Re: cat or not that is the question

I've got an '84 GMC built in the St. Therese, Quebec plant, it came stock with a cat. But it's not a big 10.

From what I've read the big 10's from 79 on did have cats.

See this link from another board:http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/sm...php?topic=14.0

Re: cat or not that is the question

pfft who needs cats, you could always find a junk cat and run your exhaust pipe straight through it...looks like you have a cat...thats what i plan on doing (police hear in southern iowa are pricks)

Re: cat or not that is the question

I found a set of cats on line from a company that produces them for street cars and show trucks, they were not very expensive and they will not decrease my horsepower... so the manufacturer claims....I will let you all know how I make out after I install everything this week.

Re: cat or not that is the question

Cats are required by federal law on anything produced 79 and after. Even if it was made in Canada. They sent trucks from those plants everywhere including U.S. and beyond. Since they are a american company they fall under our (U.S.) jurisdiction.

Re: cat or not that is the question

why does everyone have such trouble about cats? they are effecient and cheap these days. 100 dollars or less gets anyone legal. check with a custom exhaust place in your area or go to the net. the cats these days don't rob any power and heck guys, if we can help keep the air clean cheaply and still have ponies, why not?

Re: cat or not that is the question

Hey Guy's
Thank you for all of your responses to my cat or not question.
I bought two 2.5" cats from a company called "Flowmonster" they are a work of art and now my truck is legal, which is all I was trying to achieve in the first place.
I also agree with the whole clean air thing, but with that said my truck is a "Big 10" a 1/2 ton on 3/4 ton chassis, if you do research on this model it can be very confusing.
According to my VIN # my truck was manufactured without cats, but I am installing them anyway.
Thank you for all of your feedback it has been a great help.

Re: cat or not that is the question

I suppose if you are spending the money anyways, and dont mind doing it, go ahead as shown here...

Personally, I don't run cats on my 76... it didnt come with them, and unless the gov't pays me cash (not some deduction) to put them on and cover the costs of parts and labor, its staying that way
