Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

Looking at the bed floor of my '65, it appears that the floor was painted AFTER the bed was assembled. I'll post a pic later of what i mean.

@Str8axle - If they painted the bed after assy, the strips must be painted to? That would be a tedius job to mask up all those and only paint the wood

That looks nice to 1Bad62Pro/Street.
Looks like you can still see the grain. Would like more of a satin look to tie in with my other black on the truck

Looks better theastronaut
I have some dye coming so I'll be trying that next week. Supposed to get my wood and strips today. Been working on the widened tubs though. What a project that is. Rearranging the wood so I don't have to go as wide as the tubs in the red truck pic above. Plan on having them in primer tomorrow.
By the way, nice 'bug' you have there (saw on your thread)
I'll post pics next week.

Ok, on the contrary, looking at the bed floor in my '66, it appears that the bed sides and wheel tubs were painted AFTER the floor was in place. There is clearly body color paint remaining on the bolt heads and overspray on the black wood. I think I can even see evidence of a heavy (paper?) mask that was stapled in place before paint. Pics this weekend maybe.

My apologies to tazattitude for debating originality issues on his thread, when I think all he wanted was cool ideas on how to do his own. Nice truck!

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

OEM4ME That's what this forum is all about, were lucky to have someone with an original truck to make observations like that. I think the black wood bed is going to be a trend here. Thank you for any pictures you can post on this issue.

On my bed, it looks as though the bed sides and tubs were put on after the assembled floor was painted. No masking or tape lines along the tubs and sides, only across the rear sill (see pix). And to answer your question, yes the strips are painted also.

Thank you for those pictures. Would you say it's a paint or stain that's been applied?

Re: Black wood beds!!!! UPDATED with pics

Got my bed done!!!!!

Got the effect I wanted with the wood. It's a very dark color, but you can still see the grain, not only in the clear itself, but in sunlight, you can see through the black.
The last 2 pics almost show it as black, but it's not.
The clear is a satin clear to tie in with the roof.

I made mods to the bed wood, so I had to drill all new holes in the cross sills.
I probably have about 60 hours in it all including the widening of the tubs.

Got all my holes drilled along with the gas filler hole

Here, I am dying the wood

Resanded the wood

Stained the wood

Another pic of the stain

Started clearing with satin clear - ended up spraying about 4 coats of clear on it.
Owning a bodyshop sure helped spraying the clear. Only took about 5 minutes to do all the wood

You can see the widened tubs here. I also moved the boards around. The 2 skinnier boards are now on the outside. I did this to minimize the width I had to widen the tubs so I would fall on a board. LOT's of holes I had to drill.

Done! Whew, the fuel cap hole fell perfectly in line!
I had relocated the fuel filler on the fuel tank so it would be a little more toward the center. Normally on the CPP tanks, it's about 5 inches to the left. Since I relocated the wood, the old filler location landed right on a bed strip

Since these pics were taken, I lifted the tubs up and cut the strips so they ended at the tub flanges instead of going under it.
Looks better, plus it makes the flanges flatter against the wood.

Also, redid the bumper to bed fillers so they are now smooth (no holes)

Now onto the tailgate

Its pretty much all trimmed, drilled, and primed- ready to sand and paint. Gotta get my wear strips and cross supports powdercoated so I can get it put back together. Shouldn't be much longer, hope it turns out half as good as yours!
