Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

Looks great Willy!!!! One thing I found out is dye will make the wood black in one coat, BUT, in the sun, dye has a gray tint to it, which is why I sanded that, and left it fairly dark, then stained it with ebony to make it more black, than charcoal.

Great job on your bed!

What's up with that truck? There's not too many original beds around in that shape. Let's here about it! ...the whole truck, that is. Remember, we all like PICS, PICS, and more PICS!

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

The truck is a '66 3/4 ton with a 305E V-6 engine and Powerglide transmission . It has 27,xxx original miles and is about as complete and untouched as you will find. It still has the original paint and the interior is completely intact. It's got some rust in the lower front fender corners and plenty of small chips and scratches, but it is a survivor.

Rather than highjack this thread, I'll start a new thread and post some more pictures. In the meantime, you can see a picture of the full truck on this thread:

The last 2 pics almost show it as black, but it's not.
The clear is a satin clear to tie in with the roof.

I made mods to the bed wood, so I had to drill all new holes in the cross sills.
I probably have about 60 hours in it all including the widening of the tubs.

Got all my holes drilled along with the gas filler hole

Here, I am dying the wood

Resanded the wood

Stained the wood

Another pic of the stain

Started clearing with satin clear - ended up spraying about 4 coats of clear on it.
Owning a bodyshop sure helped spraying the clear. Only took about 5 minutes to do all the wood

You can see the widened tubs here. I also moved the boards around. The 2 skinnier boards are now on the outside. I did this to minimize the width I had to widen the tubs so I would fall on a board. LOT's of holes I had to drill.

Done! Whew, the fuel cap hole fell perfectly in line!
I had relocated the fuel filler on the fuel tank so it would be a little more toward the center. Normally on the CPP tanks, it's about 5 inches to the left. Since I relocated the wood, the old filler location landed right on a bed strip

Since these pics were taken, I lifted the tubs up and cut the strips so they ended at the tub flanges instead of going under it.
Looks better, plus it makes the flanges flatter against the wood.

Also, redid the bumper to bed fillers so they are now smooth (no holes)

Now onto the tailgate

Love it! What products did you use to dye and clear the wood? This is the look I want to get on my '63.

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

Very Nice Job! I'm doing mine out of "Bloodwood", natural finish, probably apply about 8 coats of hand-rubbed Tung Oil for a light sheen, then install stainless bed strips and bolt kit. I'll post pics when done.

Never heard of the bloodwood finish. Sounds like it'll be sharp. Looking forward to seeing the pics.

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

Bloodwood is an exotic hardwood from South America. Its very dense, weighing about 5 lb/bd.ft. It is very beautiful though, had blood-red, dark orange & black streaks. I know it isn't the factory look, but it should look awesome when done. I'll definetly post pics when I get it completed.

Re: Black wood beds!!!! Pics Please

...so I found a set of nos bed wood in my dads shop... they are black, look to have come from gmc, and the part # is 036060660-I think.... I will have to get a pic.
so the bundle has 4 pieces with the nos wrapper, and then there is one wider piece (about 2 inches) that is loose.....they are 8ft/lwb
any idea what it might fit?
I am thinking long step? but lmc lists long step to have 8 pieces, and I only have 5....
or maybe it is a partial kit and some is missing?
..I know, I know I will get a pic of it!!

Way more functional than pretty. One day I will put real board in their vice the marine grade plywood, but it will probably always be black cause I tend to haul things and don't want to worry about ruining a finish.

Thanks! It's Valspar latex enamel, #60073 Satin Black. I thinned it with Floetrol to make it sprayable. One quart was enough to do top and bottom. The boards came pre-sanded, we only spent 15 minutes with 180 grit on a DA sander before shooting a couple coats of paint.
