2024 GM truck roofs developed cracks

Just seen this . Seems that some roofs are developing cracks . This has happened to trucks on the lot not even sold yet so it seems it’s not a fatigue issue. The fix is to drill a hole at each end and weld it . Ya I’d want that done in my brand new truck

You couldn't give me one of those new trucks.
J-U-N-K junk, on top of being ugly.

Re: 2024 GM truck roofs developed cracks

I wouldn’t call them junk, they are a little fugly though. I have a ‘22 HD as a daily and it’s honestly been a damn good truck. Nothing but oil changes in the 50,000 miles I’ve had it(since brand new). I usually get a new one every 3-4 years. That said I’d be pissed if I bought one of these repaired trucks. GM should eat them, that’s my opinion. Makes me wonder if it’s an issue in the tooling used to stamp the panels.

Looks like a lot of stretch going on in that area, to form that shape.

[I had design release/responsibility for the full size truck cab underbody structure and box sheetmetal, somewhere back in the 2013-2014 ish timeframe]

In fairness when you weld sheet metal it’s done with multiple tach welds to avoid warping the panel . But that weld could be a lot better

Metal on newer vehicles is stretched too thin. Not from new, but the slightest tap on a corner often brings about splitting on most vehicles today

If people are dumb enough to spend what they charge for trucks these days, then they are dumb enough to put up with this. 50K+ trucks wtf.

Man I wish they were only $50k...I'm responsible for specing and purchasing trucks for our fleet. 3-4 years ago I could get a F-350 XL trim with a service body for $52k....that same truck is $81k this year.

Re: 2024 GM truck roofs developed cracks

There is another article on that website about 2023 Colorado and Canyon trucks developing a dent in the roof from taking it through an automatic car wash. Quality sure has gone downhill while the prices have climbed sky high...

Man it’s ridiculous, I manage the some of the outfitting of new trucks in our fleet. Both service bodies and flatbeds. We are in the low $50K’s just for XL’s, and WT’s, the Ram tradesman’s are $10K on average more than the Ford and GM stuff. That’s just the pickup not including all the stuff we add to it like bed swaps, pumps, compressors etc. These are extra cab long bed Fords and crew cab long and short GM’s. The crew short Chevy Customs and XLT extended cab long beds that our supervisors get are starting high $50K’s-low $60K’s.

Most of these similar trucks were high $30K’s to low $40k’s 5 years ago.

Exactly! I just cut a PO for an Ext cab short bed 4x4 F-150 XL with weather guard boxes was $50k via the state contract. Same spec'd truck in 2019 was $31k
