King pin slop/play 1967 c50

First time working with a kingpin style axle so bear with me. Is there a way tighten the kingpins without replacing/rebuilding it? 1967 c50 5000lb front axle with only 66,000 miles. I already found all the parts to rebuild it just wondering if I can tighten what's there. The service manual was of zero help.

Thanks

Sorry CarolinaHD, I'm not sure. If you don't have much luck here you could try the stovebolt forums

Re: King pin slop/play 1967 c50

I know this is an old thread, but seeing as how no one ever answered...

I had a 5000lb axle apart and there was no adjustment for the king pins. Just the bushings or oversize bushings if it is too worn. In my case I was upgrading to disk brakes and had the axle bored larger for newer larger pins that fit the 1989 knuckles.

Yep forgot to update this after i rebuilt the front end. I found a kit by stemco that doesn't use plastic bushing and you dont have to ream it out. Worked great and no slop now.

So you reamed the factory 5000lb axle bigger and the knuckles and everything swapped over no issues?

I was going to follow what Richard (rkn463) had done to his truck and was using axles off of a 1988 Topkick but never went through with it. Going 4wd with a Dana 60 now instead, but I do have the complete front axle off the 88 with hydraulic brakes, leaf springs, hangers, 22.5" wheels & tires, steering arm etc available for Free if anyone here would like to have there try at it.

Yep, this baby was kept in a shed and has registration cards back to the late 70s with the correct mileage

Yes, I was using an 89 C60 as a donor for my 68 body. The 89 axle was 6" wider than the 68. It turned out the steering knuckles from the 89 "fit" the 68 axle after overboring the kingpin holes in the 89 axle by .0070. Check out post #14 in my build thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=704713

By the way, thanks for the info in your tread about the Bosch brakes. My build is stalled right now due to a problem with the auxiliary backup pump for my hydroboost and a complete lack of available replacement. I'll likely swap over to the Bosch style booster.

They must have never greased it

I have no clue how many miles my 65 c/50 had back in the 1980s when I owned and ran it. The speedometer didn't work for a long time before I fixed it. I was guessing that it was on it's third engine/second rebuild. It could have had work done to the front end but in all the rough miles that I put on it, I never had any issues with the front axle and steering.

Re: King pin slop/play 1967 c50

According to the man I bought it from, their mechanic rebuilt/replaced alot of brake parts in 2004 right before he died.(which is why the truck sat for so long they had no one to work on it).
Best I can figure is there was a little slop and he thought replacing the factory bronze bushings with the cheap Moog plastic parts would tighten it up? I'm sure it did for about a week lol.
