Re: E3 Spark Plugs??

Well, I have Had these plugs in for a couple of weeks. Truck is still running better then it did before the change, but can't say for sure if it the E3's or just having new plugs. Mileage, well I am on my second tank, the first tank was right around my average of 10mpg. The second tank got me thinking, I have put almost 100 miles which should be about 10 gal, but my gage is still at 3/4s of a thank, whats up did I just double my mileage. I knew these results had to be to good to be true, somethings not right. Well figured it had to be either a bad gage or the float was stuck in the tank. Removed the wire, needle went past full, grounded it went down to empty, OK, the gage is good. Next, banged the tank near the sending unit a couple of times, still at 3/4s of a tank can't be true, one more hard hit and I heard the float drop, checked the gage and sure enough its near half now. I will be filling it up on Friday and will let you all know if there is any significant change in the mileage.

Re: E3 Spark Plugs??

I put a set in my 96 last year thinking that it would help with the rough idle. It did, but I think that had to do with new plugs/wires/cap, yadda yadda yadda (full tuen up). About 3 months after changing the plugs the truck started running horribly. Couldn't find the misfire, looked and looked for days. FInally one night I happened to see a plug arcing to the exhaust manifold. The plug had broken where the ceramic meets the metal body. Thought no big deal, just change it out and it'll be good. Two weeks later had the same exact thing happen to another plug on the other side of the motor.

Took them all out and swapped them for AC Delco and haven't had a single problem since. Diamond fire or not, if the plug wont stay together it's no good.

Re: E3 Spark Plugs??

There is no way a spark plug will improve mileage, as long as the plug fires the mixture then it will give the same mileage. As for power, if the plug coming out is lighting off the mixture completely then a new plug will do nothing. Read in the book "How to Hot Rod the Small Block Chevy" in the ignition section, Smokey Yunick said that if it starts the fire and the mixture is uniform then the best power will happen.....forget all the trick ignition and spark plugs. Good solid spark is all that is needed. E3's are another way to spend needless money. I use good old AC's, MSD wires, and MSD box to get it done in my engines......tried and true.

Re: E3 Spark Plugs??

Maybe I'm just holding a grudge because they drug me out of my office and took up hours I needed to get my magazine out in time, but here's my thoughts. The folks at E3 threw a roundtable for the editors of Custom Classic Trucks, Classic Trucks, Street Rodder, Popular Hot Rodding, Super Chevy, and Rod & Custom. They went through the whole spiel, and then took our requests for test samples. Had they sent what I'd asked for I would have done some dyno-testing because that along with some testing on the real dyno, out on the street with fuel-mileage loops it's all BS to me.

I kind of think the samples never showed-up because hot rod type applications seemed to confuse the E3 folks. I can't say one negative thing against 'em, so I guess I should shut up. One always has to remember people's jobs are at stake when they run their mouth on an Internet forum.

In the past I ran AC, NGK with no complaints. These days I'm running Autolite, and have yet to have a problem. I did pull the AC plugs out of my '05 GMC at 50,000 miles and drop in Autolites. There was not one bit of change in fuel-mileage testing, and I didn't do any dyno pulls, so I don't know what they did for HP.

Boy, that was a lot of writing for not saying much, huh?

Re: E3 Spark Plugs??

Basic physics says the spark will jump the shortest route to ground. There's only one spark per cylinder unless you have a multi-spark system like some aircraft engines do, so it doesn't matter how many electrodes you have.

Re: E3 Spark Plugs??

I did notice a difference in the performance, but gas mileage is still about the same. The performance increase is most likely do to having a new set of plugs an not the E3's. So far I have no complaints about them, although I don't think I would pay full price for them. They have only been in my truck for about 700 miles, so they are still fairly new.

Re: E3 Spark Plugs??

I started my rebuilt engine on E3's as I was convinced they were the next best thing. After a week of smelling like gas everytime I drive my truck, I changed them out for ACDelco and no smell. Initially I was thinking a carb adjustment was in order but apparently not the case. JUNK JUNK JUNK.

Re: E3 Spark Plugs??

May just be good for small engines, put one in my four wheeler and riding lawn mower and can tell a difference in starting and running. Don't have to choke to start.

Plain old Champion Copper in mine. No issues. Just put new Bosch Platinum in the '98 'burb. I think Bosch were stock for that truck (they were there when I got it).

The exact opposite happened with mine. I used to get a strong smell of gas when I hit the pedal, now it smells like a hint of racing fuel. I am not endorsing these plugs and I am sure sooner or later there true colors will shine and I will be putting back some AC's. I'll see what happens.

Re: E3 Spark Plugs??

Years ago I had good luck with splitfires in my straight six. Like anyone else though, it was in conjunction with wires, cap and rotor. I pretty much go with stock ac delco or ngk.
