Re: Papa's 67 step side (aka ANOTHER porterbuilt prison)

Keep up the great work, it is looking great. I know it gets frustrating finding out the hard way with figment issues with little info or warning (I have had way to many of those myself), but it will be worth it in the end.

I'll be following along?

I grabbed a rear end from a 01 Chevy blazer. it already had disk brakes and its a 8.5 with 30 spline axles. 54" wms to wms which is what i need to lay frame on the step side.

Yep, I narrowed my '69 12 bolt to 54" as well after speaking to RustSpot about his. I still have to cut the bedsides.

My '68 has the same story. Grandpa bought it new off the lot in 68 and it's been passed down the family to me.

Are you raising your entire bed, how much?

The great thing about it is it will be one project to keep...I always end up selling them to fund another....

I'm undecided between raising the bed, or leaving it at the stock height with just a notch cover--either something clean, or something funky like old boards and a big rusty hasp that looks like a toolbox.
I have the extreme rear drop--the higher notch, so after laying out and giving an inch or so of clearance, that's a pretty tall raising. Haven't measured that yet.

I kept popping back in (like it had memory) but i finally got to enough to where any skim coat will make as smooth as a babies butt.

Hopefully i have enough time this weekend to get the bed back on to start the mods on it.

one way to get it to stop poping back like a pop can, is heat it up, then put a cold wet rag on the area itll shrink the metal, and cause it to stop poping in and out, sometimes this works, sometimes the metal is to stretched and it wont, just my .2 cents from working in body shops

Re: Papa's 67 step side (aka ANOTHER porterbuilt prison)

I second the heating my sand blaster guy warped my hood and I guess it was really bad when we got it back (never got to see that) and my father used a propane torch and heated her up until it was semi decent. Still wobbles quite a bit but I got another solid hood so I'll be using that one just be careful with the heat it could also make it worse

I have a couple of fenders if you are interested in let me know. I was going to to hold on to them but they take up a lot of space and I need to buy a radiator
