Tranny ID help needed!

i have a 4wd SM420 in the garage, it has one PTO output on the driverside, and reveres is down to the left.
But i need a 2wd...
anyway, i know a guy that has a 2wd SM420 (he thinks) in his 3/4 ton 67 longbed stepside that he was wanting to trade/sell. looking at his tranny, it has a PTO output on the passanger side, and unfortunatly the shift forks where froze and i could not run though the gears.

what manual trannies did they put in 67 chevy pickups.

my thought they put the SM420's in correct? are there any other 2wd transmissions they put in those pickups?

does anyone have a 2wd 420 they can check to make sure the PTO output is on the driveside?

what tranny does this other one sound like?

the 420 has reverse on the left side and only one PTO cover and the 465 have one cover on each side of case and reverse to the right side.

also there were a coupe of New Process models and a borg warner model and one other model 4 speed toploader tranny available in these turcks, but are super rare and i highly doubt you came across one.

get the M-codes off the glovebox parts ID label code lke M10 or M49, etc. also get the L-code like LS9 or L47, etc. and any G codes, on this 67 that tis guy has

You'll have to post a photo. I thought ALL 420's were unmarried (and therefore "2WD"), and 4X4 trucks with 420's were ALL divorced Timkin transfer cases, since 205 Tcases didn't come out until 3 years after GM went to the SM465.
Other available stick trannies were predominantly 3 speeds, but none of them had PTO covers.

i took some pic tonight, i will have to get them developed and scanned, so hopefully sometime this week.

could the tranny be a T18?

this is gonna probably become compicated by 1968 GM info says:

1968 GM data book info:

'Four-Wheel-Drive Transfer Case
SeriesK5/KE10-20(doesnt mention KS10-20 models * S=6cyl and E=V-8)

the transfer case onm four wheel drive models is bolted dirtectly to the tranny case tailshaft throufgh an adaptor eliminating the intermediate propeller shaft linking the two gear boxes, in four wheel drive position driver has the choise of direct gear of 1.94 to 1 underdrive. control is through a single lever havign four positions. from the rear froward to the front of the truck these positions are: four wheel underdrive, neutral, four wheel direct drive, and two wheel direct drive(sounds like 205 to me) a power take off opening is provided at the rear of the case'

there were only three three speed trannies available in 67-68 and only two in 69-up:

68 and older : Sm326 std with 250 only,
Sm326 comes with all 292 and larger engines
Sm326 std in all trucks all engines cept 4x4 and longhorn in some years of 68-72
Sm330: in all 4x4 as std equip

Sm326 is most common tranny youll see in 6768 and is all youre really gonna see in a 698-72, 330 are very uncommon, if not rare
326 with the bellhousing is the same length and tail spline of a short tail th350, 318 is 3" shorter than that even,, its tiny tranny only 4 bolts in side cover compared to 7 on saginaw 326


there was also the warner t16D, but is rare one, i havent seen a 67-72 with oneordered on it, so far..

and was overdrive M10 RPO, it was a unit bolted onto end of a 326 tranny

also there was another oen in 69-72 years i believe, I would have to look though

i believe warner or all the NP trannies were with aluminum shifter case top/lid

you wont see anthing but a 465 i a 68-72 unless you find a rare case of anything els ebeing ordered, i oly know of one such truck with oe of the NP trannies in it, and last i know he was thinking of removing it.... i think was the CR one even,,, awesome gear ratio set in it.,, M28 is the GM RPO code for the 435CR tranny, would bne listed on glovebox list(SPID)

M49 is turbo hydramtic(350 and 400 both)
M10 is overdrive(326 with o/d unit)
M20 is the 465(std on soem trucks so wont be listed on some)
M35 is powerglide, cant have it with 396
M28 is the 435CR, includes dana 60 3.54 with the 396 engine in the C10 trucks would be a single floater dana 60 axle ! rare !

M16 is the warner T16D
M17 is the fully synch 326, not available with 250 engine before '69, the 318 was what was bolted to 250 before '69

good enough for now, things changed here and ther ein 69-up, every year varied a bit for what was available with what engine and etc.

plus they did away with couple of the 4 speed options after 69 anyways
