1956 gmc 660

There is an interesting truck on YouTube, a '56 GMC 660 with a 4-71 Detroit and a 10-Speed Road Ranger. Truck looks like an 18 or 20 Ft Flatbed with Budd Wheels, what looks like 10-20 Tires and has Air Brakes. I have to say it's one of the coolest trucks I've ever seen. The truck also has a Factory Tach, but interestingly no Speedometer. Especially interesting to me is the RR Trans. It is an R-960, one I've never heard of and has a Shift Pattern that I've also never seen:

R------1/6-----3/8
--------N--------
5/10--2/7-----4/9

It's a long video, over 1 hr, but pretty interesting if anyone would like to check it out:

That's quite an accomplishment getting that thing running in that shape. I'm surprised it was mechanically sound still.

Re: 1956 gmc 660

For a little additional info, I have since learned, pretty much like I figured, that the R-960 is an Overdrive Trans.

So an overdrive trans and no speedometer, what an odd combo.

Someone stated that this truck could have had a " Tach O Graph".

"A big box looking gauge with a clock and speedometer visible to the driver.
They used a key to open it and inside was circular paper card that recorded
time, speed, and stops".

I remember them in fleet trucks many years ago. They were off a little to the right and faced the driver.

Goes to show that you could order a truck just about anyway you wanted it years ago.

Thanks for posting Bill. Those extra heavies are really something special, there just not a pickup with larger fenders, there equipped with all the good stuff. This part of truck history really needs to be saved from the crushers.
