Question value of unrestored '58 panel truck

Hi everybody,

I have a co-worker who told me today she has a non-restored '58 panel truck. It is a Texas truck so should not be rusted to swiss cheese. Without having any information on the overall condition, does anybody know what an ballpark value would be for an unrestored '58 panel truck?

ONE FENDER is going for $500 on Ebay, rear barn doors are near $1000.

Unrestored panel trucks in barn condition, not running, maybe missing entire drive train, are $2500-up. Compete rust free examples are around $4-8000. US dollars that is ;-)

I couldn't find any 58 panel trucks for sale (proving they are rare and command a higher price) but I did find some unrestored pickups that were all around $10,000:

Re: value of unrestored '58 panel truck

I'd say somewhere between $500 and $5,000, but...

This beast might be upside down and in baskets for all we know. Condition is a lot more important than mileage (IMO), but we need to know both.

Here's an Ebay search of '55-'59 trucks, COMPLETED listings. Notice that most SOLD patina'd trucks are $4K and below, and some of those are drivers.

Add about 20% because it's a panel, but notice that that '57 California panel that runs, stops, drives and is "almost restored" (I don't think so) didn't sell for $9500. The blue "20-footer" panel that is popping rust also didn't sell for $9500.

People can ASK anything on Ebay, and they often do...

Sounds like a guy could make a fortune buying up AZ trucks and hauling them East.

Re: value of unrestored '58 panel truck

does it matter what the market is? the panel you are asking about isnt in the market. co-worker, unadvertised, no pictures, no asking price. if she is leaving it up to you, then YOU are the market and you can offer what you think is fair.

there was a general discussion about this recently, WIW threads seem to always include opinions of value from people who arent buying, and arent interested in buying. thats not a knock, but well meaning opinions of value should have some sort of stake in them.

Generally folks back east don't want to spend the $$. I get a *lot* of grief for paying too much for vehicles with low rust. The general population in this area seems to think a body shop can repair a vehicle and do a full repaint for under $2500. Folks are absolutely floored to learn that $500/quart is not an expensive paint.

But sometimes it works. The trick is not losing your shirt in the transportation costs. Last summer one of the shops near us brought back a pile of trucks from SD and OK. Sold a few outright, then sold others as part of a customization package. And occasionally you'll see ads from someone hoping to make a few bucks doing the same thing. Notice the "other" cab in this ad:

Here it is, next to a 67-72 truck:

Here's one from KS that has reappeared on CL a couple of times during the summer:

Here's a nice one that we hope goes to someone who appreciates it:

"WIW" threads - I like it!

I do a daily nationwide search of Craigslist and Ebay for all '47-'54 Chevrolets, just to torture myself I guess ;-)

Pickups are plentiful, but dilapidated Suburbans may as well be coated in gold, ha ha!

Re: value of unrestored '58 panel truck

I know this is old but Panels and Suburbans are a lot harder to find. I do searches for parts and vehicles almost every day and around here there's maybe 3 Panels to every 20 pickups. Also around here those parts prices about the rear doors are correct, but they're not selling. I personally sold a set of '54 Ford panel running boards recently for $300 that needed work. Panels have a smaller market, but when someone wants them or their parts it gets pricey.

Look around in your area for your local worth of a vehicle and don't be swayed by others in a different area.

Re: value of unrestored '58 panel truck

I'd say that you have to do some research on what the actual going price for similar TF trucks are selling for in Central Texas. What they sell for in other parts of the country is just fly in the sky ball part figures.

Still having lived in Central Texas I can say that just because it is a Central Texas truck doesn't mean it is rust free by any stretch of the imagination. You have to check it over pretty close before even thinking about tossing out an offer.

Critical parts such as the back doors and the area around the back doors mean a lot on a burb or panel.

I have to say one thing, your integrity has to have some value here as you don't want to be known as the guy at work who ripped off your female coworker by lowballing her on the price of the truck.

I did find one pretty well rust free no engine 58 truck in Laredo for 3500 https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/ct...868287902.html That might give you something to compare to.

It still comes down to actual condition (barn find has no added value) it just means it was somewhat under cover. Clear title that matches the vin on the truck and what you both feel is an honest price. I'd rather have coworkers thinking I was a tad crazy for paying a bit more than they thought an "old dirty truck" was worth than having them talking behind my back because they thought I had ripped her off and gotten over on her. Or if you decide to pass help her with figuring out a legit asking price so others don't rip her off.

Old thread but I assume classic Chevy trucks will only get more valuable and more rusty every year.

Some Texas cars, lol:

when a person creates his first post on a how much a panel value and owned by co-worker. Do they really need a reply for something that trivial. Sorry but you wont see anymore activity from that guy or a photo of vehicle.
