rebuilt 235 popping through carb

I just got a rebuilt 235 running today. It is popping though the carb bad like an intake valve is open. I double checked my wires and valve adjustment. Everything seems fine and it in the correct order. It will idle but has no power and is of course missing. I did notice one of the lifters did not seem pumped up. I let all of them soak in oil for like a week before installing them. The engine has a worked head new rings and main and rod bearings. Also it has a new carb and a one wire dist. new plugs and wires.

Could the cam gear be a tooth off?

A compression check could help in isolating the problem.

I concur on the compression test.....will help you determine which cylinder is affected.
Please let us know what you find!
Thank you.

I changed the lifters back to solid and readjusted the valves. Runs fine now

Re: rebuilt 235 popping through carb

The very first post gave it away... lifter didnt pump up.

Originally the motor had solid lifters.... why were different lifters installed. New cam ? Just wondering......
