Project: Haulin Crap
Well What can I say thats what its gonna be for!! Haulin crap to the dump as well as whatever else.
Im pretty sure everyone has seen my green 72 I bought for 400$. Outside looks great but the 15 years it sat in the barn took its tole on a few places mainly the header panel in the cab and the outer rocker panels. Everything else is rust free. Well the warm weather got to me so I figure i got a couple hundred extra dollars Ill pull the her heart out of it and give it a quick ring and bearing and possibly a cam job. I have a set of vortec heads i can throw on her with a intake and a few choices of carbs laying around. Plug a few sets of gaskets and probably enough bearing if i really dig. Yes I have too much crap dont we all. It ran ok after i put it back together when i got it but it smokes so this is the ultimate reason for this. Anyway heres a few pics.

And a few more. I was pleasently surprised at the shape of the motor. Looks like its never been into. Still has the stock steel shim headgaskets.

And a few more. Oh by the way when it was running it didnt have any knocking noises and it had great oil pressure. I just wish the rings werent froze to the pistons then i wouldnt have to do all of this.

The head casting Numbers were 3986339X Not sure what the x meant.
Block as you can see 3970020. 307 2 bolt main. Front engine stamp V0205TDA. Flint Plant, Feb 5th, 1972 307

Well I dropped it off at the engine shop yesterday. After I got the pistons out it needed to be bored. Oh well i guess. After i figured everything up it was gonna cost me just as much to buy everything as it is for my engine guy to just build me a short block so I figured it was worth my time to let him deal with it. I did order a cam and lifters and timing chain from summit and gave those to him to put in so that saved me a couple bucks. Its not going to be anything fancy. Just a .030 over 307 with a 267/277 cam and l31 vortec heads and a summit intake and edelbrock/carter/holley carb. I have all 3 carbs sitting on the shelf so its just a matter of deciding which one. I even have a couple quadrajets as well. But anyway just thought id update. So far I got almost twice as much in the motor as i do the truck. Go figure.

Well counting what i have in the engine now or at least once it will be done ill have about 1500$ in the truck counting odds and ends. Oh and i got a steering wheel off craigslist yesterday for 50$ Heres a pic. My original one is all sticky and crappy looking from sitting.

Got a part number on that intake? I am eventually going with vortec heads on my 307 too.
Edit. Your l98 heads don't require a custom intake like the vortecs do do they? I am gonna run some vortec heads off a 5.0/305.

L98 heads require the custom intake cause of the bolt pattern. However they are some of the best flowing stock heads out there. Here is a couple part #'s from summit on the intakes.
Summit SUM-226018 Summit SUM-226019 I wish I had gott the second one now but the one i have was free so I cant complain.

Well I got bored this evening so I decided to repaint my instrument panel. I read somewhere on here that if you paint the inside componenents white then The lights inside will be brighter so I did and painted a few more things as well. I really only needed to change my light bulbs but what the hey. Why not. Anyway here a few pics.

Well i put it all back together tonight and heres what it looks like. The white on the bottom guages is looking kinda dingy and rusty but for a work truck theyll do.

They are an aftermarket brand x. I found a couple sets of them on ebay for about a 150-200 depending on painted or polished. They are in great shape just needed to be cleaned up and Ill prolly paint them and chunk them on a shelf till i need them. Im gonna be using vortec heads on my 307 so those wont exactly work. That and i have a powder coated set of stock valve covers for it anyway. Im gonna try to keep it somewhat stock looking but obviously these trucks didnt come with aluminum intakes and vortec heads so theres only so much I can do.
Once i pulled the instrument cluster out I realized just how rusty looking the whole pedal assembly and heater assembly are so im gonna pull them out next and clean and repaint those. Need a new heater core anyway. I also noticed on the backside of the upper door hinge is split at the seam so im gonna have to weld that up as well. I started making a list so I guess ill just have to start checking things off.

Well got the call a little while ago that my shortblock was done. Then it started pouring down rain so I guess ill have to wait till tomorrow or sat to go pick it up. Anyway just an update. I was excited as usual for some odd reason. Not that i havent picked up a hundred engines from the machine shop but for some strange reason its exciting each and everytime. Kinda like picking up a new baby from the hospital only less cranky!! LOL

I've always heard it was risky boring the 307 blocks. Your machine shop was ok with it? So you basically have a 327 now?
