Project 69-some day long and low

Discovered more rust than I initially thought...

I knew I had rust in the passenger door and rocker, and the inner fender under the battery, but found more in the other inner fender, and the firewall lip after cleaning out leaves...

Here are a few pics.

Did get the motor and transmission pulled between rain storms here in WA state. Holding off installing the stroker till I swap the crossmember--have a line on one with drop spindles, and disc brakes but he has not pulled the motor yet...

I may just grind away what I can and POR15 that entire section of the firewall...not sure though.

Re: Project 69-some day long and low

So, check out some of the work my dad did on the motor we pulled from the 69 CST. Still planning to paint the valve covers (red stripes will be black), but this motor and trans cleaned up nice.

My dad just won't slow down at 65 yrs. old!!

This motor and trans are going into the 83 El Camino which my dad will sell or use for trading material on a 55-57 Chevy Pickup.

Re: Project 69-some day long and low

Did a little grinding on the firewall but weather has not cooperating much of late and my truck is outside. Should invest in a portable carport but that means I can't buy truck parts

Wind storm decorated my crossmember with pine needles...

I have collected parts while waiting for the weather to clear:

Passenger door, cab corner and rocker

Air ride setup (minus compressors, valves, and lines)--lots of parts but nothing labled...should be an interesting first air ride install.

Headed out in a bit to pick up a '72 crossmember, 5 lug, disc brakes and drop spindles.

Re: Project 69-some day long and low

Picked up this crossmember last evening with my dad's help. The previous owner was coverting his short-wide to a big block 4x4 so sold me this unit and threw in 4 roller rims and tires.

Re: Project 69-some day long and low

I have a regular 2 car garage, truck being built in one half and the other half is fill with junk. I got one of those portable garages and LOVE it! I put down a bunch of free 4x8 plywood sheets that these construction guys gave me on the ground. I would highly recommend getting one. Check Harbor Frieght I think its pretty cheap there.

Project is looking good!

Re: Project 69-some day long and low

Too much snow of late to work on the truck outside... portable garage looking better and better.

Started work on the crossmember after clearing some space in the garage.

Popped the upper ball joints on both sides and pulled the lowering springs out as these will be replaced with air bags. Could not pull lower ball joints as I did not have a socket on hand that was big enough...I need to take a break from buying truck parts and buys some tools

Did a little sanding on the LCA and thinking about powder coating both the upper and lower arms, but not sure yet. I bought a little powder coat system and have an old oven that I use to bake the parts, but might just go with POR15.

Re: Project 69-some day long and low

Rain stopped for a bit so managed to pull the inner fenders off. They were pretty rusted toward the front and not worth saving. Will keep them so I can practice a little more welding though.

Not certain if they will be replaced or not as I am not sure how low the truck will be in the front yet.

Still waiting on FedX to deliver my air line...

Next up: removal of the stock crossmember.

Re: Project 69-some day long and low

Despite the torrential rain at times, it was not that cold today so pulled the old crossmember out.

A person can get kind of sore working on these trucks, let me tell ya.

Probably not the most ideal way to pull the crossmember out, but slid the whole thing, wheels and all, out of the driver's side fender opening.

Re: Project 69-some day long and low

Can't beleive I am gonna sell the Model A, but as a newly wed, there are priorities I didn't have as a single guy. I have a guy coming this morning to take a look at it.

With the cash I will pay off my wife's truck and use the rest to fund parts/work on my '69 CST.

Asking the board to bow their respective heads in a moment of silence for my Model A lol...

Bad pic but...

Found a cab that will work to replace my rusty one and it includes the title. Lots of work done on the new one already but a little more to go. Price is right even with driving a couple hours each way.

Will pick it up tomorrow afternoon.
