Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

Anyone have a picture? My assembly manual's picture is tough to see. The "wedge" came out when I dropped the pedals down to put in a new stop light switch. I need to put it all back together and I want to make sure I have all the parts and it goes back together correctly.

Re: Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

do you mean the one that goes on the adj rod to the t/out arm? If you look at it. it should be easily recognizable which way that it goes. the wedge goes into the t/out arm

Re: Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

Still looking for a picture of the clutch linkage for a 351E v6 equipped truck with an SM420 trans. Or just an answer! The lower clutch rod that I took off my truck looks nothing like the picture on the LMC or Classic Industries website, or my assembly manual. They all show a 14" rod with a swivel. Mine is about half that length and is bent on the end - no swivel. I've had a message up on the gmc forum, but no responses, so I thought I'd try here. Thanks for the help!

I have a 63 gmc sub with the 305E and 4 speed. Don't know if the transmission is the same but I will go take a picture. Is it under the column or under the truck?

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for? If not can you post a picture of the parts so I can look for them?

That's one end. How long is it and what does the other end look like?

It is attached to the clutch cylinder. The linkage is about 3 1/2 to 4 inches long.

It looks like you have a hydraulic clutch. Mine is mechanical.

Neto, do the spider webs add to the structural integrity?

LOL, I was afraid to pull them off because they are black widows web and they are strong. It's carbon fiber webbing.

Re: Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

First off, thanks for the help Neto. Here are two pics to look at. The shorter of the two rods and the z-bar came off my truck, not this clean of course! I purchased the longer rod from Classic Industries and it looks like the picture in the manual I have. In the closeup picture you can see the wear and one of the reasons I'm looking to replace the rod. What led me to all this was that the other rod, that connects to the pedal, was bent. In replacing it I found that it was time to refurb the z-bar. Both the felt washer and the rubber washer inside were shot!

Re: Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

Here's a picture of the upper clutch rod. The one on the right that looks like an archer's bow is the one that came out of my truck. The one on the left I pulled off a parts truck at Deer Valley Auto Parts. Guy said that if I told 5 people about them, I could have it for $5! I've told at least 5 already! It's a great place to wander around! The rod cleaned up nice, but it also has wear like the lower clutch rod.

Re: Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

it does appear that someone has dallied around with that linkage. the one from inside the cab appears to be longer than the straight one which looks like the proper one. this could change the relationship of the clutch rod to the t/o arm, hence someone made a shorter one which is the bent one that you have. when you install that new one for inside of the cab, you will see a difference in length of the other rod. you can buy most of the pieces new or you can weld up the worn parts and grind them back to size .
they all wear at those points as it is steel to steel and they are pressure points
the z-bar looks a little funny to as it should have a kink in it, unless it is situated in the picture so as to not be visable

Re: Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

Thanks, Ron.
I was wondering about that z-bar. All the diagrams that I have seen show the kink you mentioned. Mine is not kinked. Anyone else with a 351E and a 4-speed want to chime in?

Re: Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

they all use the same z-bar and clutch rods(chev or gmc 6 cyl or 8). the inner ball stud is different mounting from i6 to a v eng
perhaps there was an a/trans in that truck once and someone converted it over to std and cobbled together setup

Re: Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

Ron,
Are you sure the bell crank (z-bar) is the same on both Chevy and GMC? Particularly, the GMC V6? I found one in a junk yard yesterday from a 65 Chevy with a small block in it. It's completely different from mine, yet it looks like the one in the manual and all the catalogs I've seen. Classic Parts has a great picture of it online and in the description it says, "Fits 63-66 Pickups and Suburbans w/250, 292, 283, and 327 engines." No mention of GMC V6, 305 or 351. Maybe someone with a 305 V6 or 351 V6 with a mechanical clutch can post a picture of theirs? Here's a picture of the one off my truck (top) above the one pulled from the '65 Chevy.

Re: Clutch linkage picture 66 GMC V6 w/ SM420

I was being presumptuous (all being the same ) about that. that kind of stuff is usually pretty basic as all of the geometry seems to be basic and everything functions the same. the I6 in the gmc would be the same as chevrolet. the pedals are the same , the linkage and the throw out arm are all in the same location.
notice the difference also in the location of the arms on the zbar- big difference.
i would just try the new zbar in there and see how it looks and lines up

figured, that's the only picture I don't have of the 66 suburban 4x4 305/SM420 that was here. I'll try and get one tomorrow. those parts were still there
I believe.
