Starting and running engine on stand

Getting ready to build a motor break in/set up stand. Anyone have any suggestions?

And what type of torsional twist does a motor have when rev’d up? As in how big, and or side support does the stand need so the motor doesn’t “fall over”.

Deciding on mostly 2x2 steel frame, tachometer/temp/oil gauges and small gallon or so fuel canister. Radiator with an electric fan.

Anyone built one before? Any pictures?

Re: Starting and running engine on stand

Well, I was going to say I have run my engines on a rebuild stand and regular engine stand with no problems but if you have spent 7K on yours try to find something a little mores substantial. Why take a chance...

Re: Starting and running engine on stand

I've used a modified irrigation engine stand. I'll post pictures. There isn't much twist on the stand since the flywheel isn't hooked to anything. 2x2 square tubing is strong enough. Put some big casters under it so you can roll it out of the way when you're not using it. I like to have a tach, oil, and water temp gauges.

Re: Starting and running engine on stand

Ran mine on an ac Delco engine stand twice just don't try to rev the crud out of it you'll be fine. If you want some insurance build two arms that bolt to te block at mounts and go to the ground. Then hang a radiator on it somewhere or just run a hose into the water pump holes..

Re: Starting and running engine on stand

I broke in my 454 on a Summit engine cradle. I revved it a couple times and didn't move. Only $30 IIRC...

Re: Starting and running engine on stand

You can make is as simple or complex as you want. I took the better engine stand that is a C shape on the bottom rather than a T. I built two struts that came off the legs up to the engine mounts. Since there will be nothing bolted to the crank besides flywheel or flexplate, you will be surprised by how little it will move. I used a bar stool to hold up the radiator and the hoses actually held it in place really well.

Re: Starting and running engine on stand

Here are some pics of mine.

If I were to build another one, I would set it up to use a bellhousing instead of an engine stand head

Re: Starting and running engine on stand

Nice Captain.....even using the ole Les Schwab battery! I must say though....interesting to have the panel right in front of the headers instead of off to the side. Is that why you have burnt kneecaps??

PS...man you got some stuff!

Re: Starting and running engine on stand

Thanks for the replies. I think I might be using a rolling display chassis I have for air-ride as my test stand/break in stand. My real estate is valuable and another 'thing' to take up room in the shop might be a no-go.

A motor sitting in a chassis is always an eye catcher..
