my 87 shortbed silverado two to four wheel drive my way

i been acumulating parts for awhile but needed a truck to start with . i went to oklahoma this christmas and found this 87 shortbed for $1000 on craigslist. around here in central nebraska finding a clean square is hard , 4 wheel shortbed very hard so i figured i'd build it my way . 350 , 465 , 205 with 10 bolt front and dana 60 rear ... ive never posted a build , but i figured with all the info i used on here and the net , i'd return some info and pics . ask away the begining....

Re: my 87 shortbed silverado two to four wheel drive my way

I didn't read the whole title and seen the first pic. I thought that it was a nice looking short bed then I seen the rest of the pics. Kind of caught me off guard.
Can you tell us what you went through. Parts, how you did the conversion, did you have something to take measurements off of. Looks like you did a pretty good job on it. Is it finished now?

Re: my 87 shortbed silverado two to four wheel drive my way

not finished , the last pics are from this weekend . i built many builds cvrom nothing but i am kinda proud of this one. i built a 70 longbed with 70's drivetrain , the motor im using , 350 turbo , 203 with dana 44 , 12 bolt twenty years ago and just parted it out in august . i been saving frame sections , hangers , brackets nd axles , trans and case for a few years . i been doing alot of sandbalsting and por15-ing , alot of bolts and then to our local pick and pull . as for measurments , the frames are similar , but no holes could be used . alot of welding up and drilling . then meauring , templates and such... plus some custom fabrication here and there

Re: my 87 shortbed silverado two to four wheel drive my way

the truck itself is fairly clean , just a little rust on each fender and cab corners. the pass door has a dent and some rust , but a skin would fix it up . the bed is clean. i still have a long build sheet to be marking off . like that floor hump i got from a 82 blazer , swap pedals and linkage , button up motor , cut down my exhaust from the other truck . and rear driveshaft still have all brake hoses and lines on rear . i need to swap front from ring and pinion to match the rear 4.10's... its late my brains a mess coffee i had earlier is wearing off lol

I like it! I see you did the trans tunnel the "easy" way. I wish i'd have thought about doing it like that, but i cut it out and welded in a high hump one. Dumb.

It's a good feeling when you let it down off the jack and it's sitting there on the ground as a 4x4 for the first time!

Re: my 87 shortbed silverado two to four wheel drive my way

more pics from today .on the rear , i still need to do a pinion seal and prob a bearing then finish cleaning it up and painting it with por15,then drill and tap for a vent hose as well as plumb steel brake lines and attach the rubber hose. up front i need to mount the brackets to hold the hoses . after i finish up the motor and clutch , i will tear into the front axle and deal with gears , calipers then.

Pretty cool. Two wheel drive short beds are hard to come by in my area, so I was thinking, 'DON'T DO IT!' Cuz we have a ton of 4x4 short beds here!

Ambitious job bud.

Re: my 87 shortbed silverado two to four wheel drive my way

the front wheels are cragars new soft 8's and rears are the new pro comp extreme moab wheels . they dont make the soft8 in a 8lug and they dont make the procomp in a 6. i wanted to keep the 6 lug half ton parts on the fron to keep weight, parts $ and caliper grinding to a minimal . some day i might find a dana 60 for the front

shortbeds in general are hard to find around here , with nebraska being farming country , trucks get used so alot are longbeds . i like a lowered short 2 wheel drive , thats where my '72 comes in heres pics of the other children .lol
