Firing Order for a 305, pics please!

This is about my 1985 Chevy Scottsdale.

I am ready to crank up my new 305 engine, but have a little trouble with the firing order. I know that the order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2, but where on the HEI cap does the #1 wire go? I am confused, and NEED pics! Also, when the distributor is in, where should the rotor be facing?

PICS PLEASE!

#1 should be right in front of the area that protrudes for the wires/connections on the cap. the illustration doesnt show that.

If you've got an HEI distributor and look down on it, #1 should be the second plug clockwise from the big protrusion.

As a start, face that protrusion directly towards the drivers side bank of cylinders. This will put the #1 plug in about the right location.

It really dosn't matter where you put it as long as as the wire is in the same position as the rotor is pointing to, when #1 cyl is at top of it's compression stroke -12 degs.. The diagram that is at the top of the thread is the standerd for as long as ther have been v8 chevys. All lot of racers find it easier to point #1 straight ahead because its an easier postion to eyeball the distributer when your droping it in, rather the tring to point the rotor toward the #1 cyl.

heh, i guess every distributor i've ever install and/or worked with has been one tooth off then. i've always had them on the first tower.

I was looking at this and comparing it to how mine is set up. On mine #1 is where #6 is on this picture. The order is then normal. Is it possible that my distributor got put in 180 degrees opposite of this pic? Otherwise I don't see how the engine would even run.

you have to remember that if you put the #1 cylinder at top dead center of the compression stroke, its ready to fire. HOW you drop the distributor in, does not matter. The ONLY thing that has to happen, is whatever "tower" the rotor is pointing to, must be where the #1 spark plug wire is connected. Its totally arbitrary.

Okay, what's the easiest way to get it to top-dead-center by myself? I don't have a second set of hands right now to help. How can I figure it out while working on it alone?

Please remember.... I'm technically challenged...

That make's sense. It's running pretty good (other than being a bit rich) so I'll just leave the distributor alone. Thanks!
