Re: "Midnight Rider" 1970 C10 SWB Fleetside

The next step is removing the Rub N Buff. During this step, I realized the lint-free rags that I originally bought are actually lint-free...on one side. Too bad I didn't discover that earlier. During my test runs, I experimented with several different chemicals to remove the silver. The best thing I found that actually still left a nice paintable surface was wax and grease remover.

https://www.dl.dropboxusercontent.co...c5do17u7&raw=1

This process, of course, takes a while too. It's very easy to remove too much silver if your rag becomes too saturated. I would guess I used about 20 rags per long board. The first few swipes can be liberal. Once you start seeing black, you really have to slow down and be precise. Keeping the rag clean for each swipe is important. Keep pushing your work from one end to the other. I used long q-tips to keep the holes and recesses cleaned up. I hope they all turn out as good as the first one. Here it is compared to just black.

Another done. I just can't do too many in one day. The smell is terrible.

A few days later and I have some more boards finished. this is looking really nice.

After a week, this phase is all wrapped up. I'll let this sit for another few days before the next step begins.

Re: "Midnight Rider" 1970 C10 SWB Fleetside

The next step for the bed wood is protecting the finish. During my tests, I tried using several types of clear. I tried marine spar varnish, polyurethane, and two part epoxy for countertops. Every one of these caused the silver to turn a yellowish color. My last option was clear spray paint. This seemed to work best. I took a few samples to the body shop and made sure their clear process would work the same. I was pretty excited about those results. So, it's time to load these boards up and get them in the paint booth.

Got all the boards layed out at Hawk Restorations for the first coats of clear. A little easier to see everything in all this good lighting.

When I did my clear tests, I always used gloss clear. This looked really good, but in reality, it was way too shiny. I really feel like there needs to be some contrast between the stainless mounting strips and the paint on the inside of the bed sides. So, I decided to use flat clear. It's actually is somewhere between flat and semi-gloss.

https://www.dl.dropboxusercontent.co...s2psa4d2&raw=1

This stuff is only sold in quarts and we really had no idea how much would be needed for full coverage. So we started with just two quarts. This ended up being enough to do two coats on both sides of the boards.

I really like how this finish turned out. The only downside is the brush marks are still noticeable and the the grain raised some from getting wet I guess. Now there are some wood fibers sticking straight up. Since we need to order more clear, I will have these guys carefully sand this finish. Hopefully some of the lines will come out but will still retain that wood grain texture look.

Got a few pics of the cab and bed while I was at Hawk. More work has been done on the body lines and everything was put in the same color primer to make it easier for me to see the progress. I put yellow tape on the three remaining places I thought still needed attention. Getting sooooo close!!!

Still waiting on more clear to arrive. Seems there is none local and there is also shipping delays. The guys did get some sanding done on the boards. They used 320 grit to knock off the high spots and scotch brite for the low spots. They just did the bottom side for now just, in case I don't like how it turns out when we respray. This way, I can keep the finish I currently have on the top side. From what I see so far, I think this method is going to turn out nice. The brush marks are gone and the specks of whatever are gone. We'll see once it gets another few coats of clear.

Still waiting on the clear to show up. Maybe it will show next week. In the meantime, the areas on the cab that I marked with yellow tape have been worked on. I'm still not quite happy with the passenger door, but the other two spots are finished now.

One other area that got worked on is inside the doors. One of the things I have been trying to keep original with this build is all of the factory spot welds and factory tooling marks. When the door gaps were being worked on, the spot welds ended up getting shaved. This is an effort to get those marks back. As you can see in the two pics below, that area is definitely visible, even with the door closed.

Update overload! The time, effort, and level of patience you put into that bed floor is insane. I'm glad I will be lucky enough to see it in person one day. I also like that swivel thermostat housing. When I did mine I ended up using the original housing and a Jeep lower hose. It works, but not trick like yours.

Re: "Midnight Rider" 1970 C10 SWB Fleetside

During one of my last visits to check on the truck, I noticed the rear of the bed wasn't square. I don't mean that it's not assembled square. It's like the sheet metal itself wasn't flat and the area where the sides were welded to the back support needed reshaped. I put an actual square on the sides and bottom at the rear, where the tailgate will mount and it proved what I was seeing. So, the guys have been working on this area. All better now.

I totally agree. Especially now that the next phase has started...wet sanding. Everything was sanded on the cab, except the body lines. Those were kept really sharp so all the lines can be radiused at the same time front to back. Will be doing that soon. Bed will get wet sanded next.

I've been researching what I want my exhaust to sound like. Now that I've done so, I'm not sure that my shorty headers are going to work out. For now, I decided to tackle the mufflers. I researched vehicles that have an LQ9 6.0 LS with my same engine specs. I found this truck. This is pretty much what I am going for...annoying. So I bought the Black Widow Neighbor Haters.

I plan to have the entire exhaust in polished stainless, so this raw stainless is going to need some work. I put a buffing wheel on my bench grinder and went to town. This is more like it. Can't wait to to get some hot air blowing through these things.

I was organizing some parts related to the windshield washer/wiper system. I realized during this, that the hole in firewall for the washer hoses was accidentally deleted. Fortunately, it is still very apparent where the hole is suppose to be. A one inch hole saw made quick work of it. I'm glad to not be in a rush and have extra time to find things like this.

I noticed the first time the cab was on the rotisserie that there were a few areas that were going to be hard to prep for paint. One of the areas is where the floor pans meet the weather-strip. There is a pretty good recess there that makes it hard to get anything in there to prep the surface. The other area is on the underside in the back where the rear crossmember meets the back panel. Again, this area is recessed and it's hard to get anything in there to prep the surface. What could be reached, got sanded and a wire wheel was used to get the rest. Also, sanded some factory undercoating off of the front side of the rear crossmember.

I also noticed during this process that there is a number stamped on the cab, behind where the mirror gets mounted. I guess this is generally hidden by the mirror and the the windshield weatherstrip. Well, I had always kind of questioned if my hood was original or not, despite the original spot welds and other factory looking markings. This stamping confirms it for me as the hood has a similar stamping on the back drivers side. Does anybody know what these numbers mean or what the factory used them for? I can't find any info about it.

Thank you. I agree, it is turning out very well. I am so glad they are always willing to do what it takes. Speaking of that, the cab is finished being final sanded and I was discussing seam sealer. I was looking over the bottom of the cab and I noticed that the pinch welds were pretty gnarly on this truck. I never really noticed this until today. The PO must have jacked the truck up from there several times previously. So, I asked the guys to work on this area. It seems crazy that I would really concentrate this much on such an insignificant spot. I'm convinced though that this area is really noticeable, especially on lowered trucks, like this orange truck below. Maybe it won't be so bad in black, but now is the time to make it right. Looking much straighter now than what I had.

Looking awesome Mr. O. I agree, the pinch welds are very noticeable on these trucks so they need to be straight on a build of your quality.

Re: "Midnight Rider" 1970 C10 SWB Fleetside

Pinch welds are often overlooked. I personally like to, after the vehicle is painted. Tape them off separately from the vehicle, scuff and shoot in a satin black. The pinch weld is still there but from 20+ ft you're eye isn't drawn to it and you get a better body profile. Beings the satin black is ontop of the paint, as it chips over it's life. You can just remask and spray a fresh coat.

Re: "Midnight Rider" 1970 C10 SWB Fleetside

I know paint is coming just around the corner. So, I'm thinking about assembly coming just after. In the last few years, I have acquired some more parts/hardware that will be part of the build, but need nickel plated to match everything else. The issue is, the place I used has gone out of business and there aren't any options around anymore. I found an electroless nickel kit made by Caswell that actually looked like I could use in my kitchen. It seemed easy enough to work with and the kit comes with almost everything I would need. So, I ordered a kit to try it out. In hindsight, I should have done a better job estimating the size of the kit I needed to order....

To start, I rounded up all of the parts I could find. Mostly it was just random hardware. Specifically, I recently purchased several sets of 12 point hood latch bolts in order to find a matched set. I also threw in some radio mounting brackets and an early takeoff ball bearing ashtray.

Preparing to plate, you have to get two solutions ready. One is a detergent bath for degreasing and the other is the plating bath. The plating kit came with two - two gallon glass lined tanks. For the detergent bath, I mixed a 1/2 pound of detergent with one gallon of distilled water and warmed it to 190°. For the plating bath, I mixed one quart of solution with 1.35 gallons of distilled water and warmed it to 185°. The kit came with a thermometer so keeping track of temps was easy.

https://www.dl.dropboxusercontent.co...hhv2302t&raw=1

https://www.dl.dropboxusercontent.co...dki6y25j&raw=1

Once the temps became stable, it was time to prepare the parts for plating. The first thing to do was strip the first batch of parts in muriatic acid. Since this is toxic and smells really bad, I did this in the garage sink, with the doors open. I let the parts soak for three minutes, then rinsed with water. I immediately transferred the parts to the degreaser bath so there was no flash rust.

https://www.dl.dropboxusercontent.co...0us9x7y1&raw=1

https://www.dl.dropboxusercontent.co...09z2kp1r&raw=1

Next was plating. Caswell, has a very specific formula for you to understand how much solution you need for your project. They refer to it as credits. The numbers of credits you use is calculated as time in bath x surface area (inē). They would also have you measure each part to be plated. I refused to spend that kind of time on this so I just grouped everything into 5"x5" batches. Caswell says once your credits reach 80% of your starting credits, you have to replenish with 4oz of solution to bring your credits back to the original number or the bath will crash. Using 5x5 batches in the formula, I would need to replenish 4oz every 14 minutes. One batch would be finished after 28 minutes. Based on this, I would only have enough solution to complete two batches. I organized the batches by priority, in case I didn't have enough to do everything. Well, I followed Caswell's instructions and replenished when I was suppose to. I had enough to start the third batch as planned. I decided to let this batch sit the entire 28 minutes to see how it would turn out. It actually turned out fine. So good, that I decided to take a chance on the last batch, which was the ash tray. I'm glad I took the chance because it turned out nice too. I'm not sure how much further I could have gone or how many more parts I could have put in each batch, but I'm glad I didn't have to push it any more than I did. This stuff actually turned out better than any of the stuff I paid for in the past. This is a little expensive for what I actually got, but it was way worth it seeing how it turned out. Not afraid to do this again if I have to!!!
