Picked up a new angle die grinder today and decided to cut my side vents open. I already vaccumed a ton of rats nest out of them when I stripped the cab. Looks like the kick panels need some work and the bottom of the vent will need replaced.

Lesson of the day: keep you drain holes clean!

Attaboy, Mike. any rust thru, also pics of the kick panels would be nice. How's the bottom of the B post?

I dont' think the B post is that bad but there is some rust through under the kick panel vent. Higher than a patch will cover I think. This truck is either really badly rusted or not at all, not much in between spots.

I found a place in Allentown that does acid dipping, $575 for the cab though! Not sure if I want to add that onto the bill of a new floor.

Decided to open the driver side vent area... gotta love leaves. Now I know why cowl grilles are popular, or just don't park it under a tree for a decade!

Oh No!!!! I shudder to think of what's lurking in in the vent panels on my trucks :waah:

picked up a few parts from a board member over the holidays... Now I have to decide between one of these three options... feel free to chime in..

1. repair my bedsides and resell the black one's (kinda rough and mine has been repaired before)

2. pull inner bedsides out of black and install in green one's, resell black parts for a little $$, then reapir the rest of my bedsides...

3. Sell both pairs ($500-600 maybe?) and buy repop ($900)

whatcha think?

and my original green sides, one wheel arch has been repaired with a patch, some bondo but very useable with a repair to the inside...

I'd use the right side black one and your left sided green one. Look to be the best of both pairs. Then resell the rest. My .02.

that's a good idea...

anyone ever pull the insides out of these?

I think that would be the best way to go as well. At least you'd have a decent pair to make a nice bed from. ...Joe

By the inside do you mean the whole inner panel or the sheemetal on the inside of the wheel well?I thought I remember you saying months back the green sides had rust there. If it's just the rusty piece for the wheel well..then yes I've replaced that. When I pieced my shortbed together for the 71 I had to replace one of those with another..Alot of cutting, trimming, fitting, and welding but it turned out ok for not being able to see it with the inner fender bolted in..I haven't done much to mine in a few months except start it.Saving up for paint,I've got the interior ready and all the sheetmetal about done...I've been trying to get a new motor in the 72 Blazer...

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

I think it would come out better to cut all the spot welds and swap all the inner parts. I would rather use an old crappy set of LWB sides and just path it but I happened to get these recently.

I might go with the third option :uhmk: Depends on your personal preference I guess. I don't have much experience with reprop metal, but I can see it being an asset when one finally gets sick of dealing with rusty, dented, 40 something year old sheetmetal.

and i'm thinking that i'm at that point. If I sell these then I will have all repop for the bed (except nice original cross sills from another truck). WOn't even get my hands dirty, much less mess with rust.

I'm still gonna try to save the cab since there are no better around right now. repop front fenders, repop rear bedsides, repop front bed panel, repop wheel wells... heck, might as well get TRI-PLUS to sponsor this build!

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

Some are pretty anal about keeping all GM sheetmetal, and while that's preferable, living in the rust belt, you have to work with what you can. Especially if you are investing alot of time and effort to save the cab, do you really want to do the same with the bedsides too? Just food for thought I guess...

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

My thing is that I have no body work skills, or equipment for body work (except hammer and dolly), It will save me a lot of time to buy new parts. I do like GM sheetmetal but don't live in AZ so it's not an option without big $$$ right now..

I just picked up a nice cab and doors if you can figure out a way to get them out that way. The only rust I see is in the rocker.............:D.

wow, that looks so much better than mine. I need that entire truck!

Are you hauling all that to FL sometime then? I could use the front fenders too if shipping is ever an option...

oh BTW... I just had some Navy Test Pilots (TPS?) guys come in for a little training this week. Nice group of fellas...

Just made a 2,200 mile road trip this week for a 1 day school... Hey uncle sam pays 50 cents a mile!

Dropped off some parts to sdailey in GA and ended up picking up some from HART_ROD in FL. Nice to meet both of you guys if you are still looking at my slow build here....

You know what, a tailgate will fit into a 97 Camry! Luckily it didn't rattle for the entire trip home, thanks to some hotel towels for cushioning!
