Re: Project Where'd The Money Go

OK, we managed to get some back once we removed the hinges this weekend. I think we are going to make a stab at adjusting some more of the distance issues out and going with a weaker hinge spring and we may have something. Here's the results of this weekend's efforts:

Back of hood should be fixed with raising the cowl a bit in the middle:

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/100_2130.jpg

We fixed some of the passenger side gap by pushing the entire front clip towards the driver's side a bit (maybe 1/16"):

And here is the driver's side now:

Thanks, guys! This SHOULD save us from having to customize the hood (and a lot of moola too). I'm more excited about moving forward now. I hate roadblocks! :uhmk:

updates?

Re: Project Where'd The Money Go

Well, a few updates in the last couple of weeks. We couldn't find weaker springs so went with new hinges. It made a ton of difference. Basically, if you can't get your hood to sit down in the back, buy new hinges. It's probably not the springs. I have it adjusted enough now that we can send it back to paint for a week of touch up.

It should go in next Tuesday and hopefully out by Friday. We'll see. In the meantime, here are a few pictures showing the latest hood fitment...

Re: Project Where'd The Money Go

Thanks all. I'm quite pleased. A little more curve from front to back in the hood than I'd like, but I think looking at the truck as a whole, its acceptable. We haven't seen very many 67-68 models that fit together very well. Well, at least as perfect as I'd like. I'm just anxious to get the touchup stuff taken care of and move on to reassembly. Got tons of parts waiting for a home. :) Hopefully we'll have some more updates in the next week or two, barring paint prison issues. I sure hate to take it back, but there's some spots that need touched up for sure plus there are some high spots in the hood from 'shaping' it. Nothing like standing on a freshly painted hood to flatten it in places. Ha!!

Great work getting the hood issues worked out. You definetly want to drill and pin the hinge to fender and hinge to hood (without drilling your hood). This way you won't have to go through all this again when you install the motor and tranny. Might want to wait until the assembly is done to do all the touch up painting too. Just saying, you never know. Nice work!

Haven't thought of all of that. We're hoping we can get the engine in without removing the hood again by using one of those leveling block things....Can't remember what they are called, but allows you to adjust the angle as it goes in. Transmission will come in from underneath. We should clear OK I think as its just a small block with no drive accessories attached yet. At least I hope!

But great ideas if we do have to take the hood back off. Much appreciated.

As for paint touchup, I'm really hoping this is the last time. We'll be extra careful. We promise. Hope I didn't just curse us.

Re: Project Where'd The Money Go

Hahaha, I wish. It's back in paint prison for touchup stuff and to get the hood painted after the "professional" adjustments I made to it. Was supposed to get it back in a week and it's been two now. They assure me it will be done the first of next week. We'll see. Hopefully an update or two next week!

great work on the truck! I am very interested in that gas tank. What sending unit did you use? wouldn't a universal one be too long and a stock one for the era 49-52 the wrong ohm?

Thanks a lot! When I get a minute tomorrow, I'm going to have to check out yours a little more too. By your avatar, it looks like a similar color. We used a universal type sending unit. I'll check on the exact details tomorrow as well. It's been so long since we did that part of the build, I've forgotten the details.

Thanks for the kudos!

Yeah, me too when I saw activity on my thread. Hahaha.

I went by the paint shop last week and they showed me the 'issues' with the blend. Basically, it didn't. They have to re-clear the whole truck. Basically, all the custom body work left nowhere to blend certain areas easily. And of course, they are swamped with insurance work they have to do before mine. That's the price you pay for using a standard body shop. They tell us "We promise to TRY to have it done Thanksgiving week". Yeah, we'll see. So far, not one date has been met. We understand the situation and knew what we were getting into when we chose to use them, but man, I sure didn't expect it to still be in paint a year later. Ugh! We have so many parts waiting to put back on the truck!!! At least the progress should really pick back up once it under our control again. Tomorrow, I'll try to remember to at least shoot some shots of the mirrors that will be going on the truck. We fastened them to the little aluminum corners that come with the one piece windows.

Thanks for sticking with us through the "intermission"

Heck, when it takes a year to get the paint done, you have plenty of time to save. :) Thanks for the compliment on the truck!!:metal:

As promised, here is some info on the fuel sending until. It is a Classic Instruments fuel sender - part number SN38. I believe we got ours on Ebay. It looks like they are still on there for the same price we paid which was $42 shipped. They are adjustable from 6"-24". It's not fully tested yet in our app because we haven't started wiring yet. But we hope it works as advertised. Seems like it should.
