Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
I have the same plug in the back of my intake manifold, I was wondering what that was. I'm just leaving mine plugged since I have hydroboost.
It's exciting to see our interiors coming together! |

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Just found out it appears the steering coupler on the rag joint is a different diameter depending on power steering gear vs manual steering gear..... I had a manual steering gear before. Now that I went power, the coupler doesn't seem to fit.... Rebuilt that for nothing...

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Just do the Jeep XJ shaft swap/upgrade.

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Damn man you're in a roll lately! Coming together nicely! Did you get your new harness in yet? Interested to see what the bulk head connector looks like.

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Scoti thanks, I will look into that upgrade. Siggy thanks man, I am sending back the deluxe universal I got and getting the full classic update harness. Brothers is hooking me up with this. Shipping it off tomorrow.
Blaster brought back everything tonight, it all looks great, hardly any body filler found on everything. Bed, doors, fenders, etc. So tomorrow I'm going to be painting everything with epoxy. Big day. Then over the weekend I'm going to try and get some body work done filling holes in doors and minor dent repair on fenders. I might have time to sand my hood and epoxy that too. It's been sitting bare metal now for six months or longer. I sprayed it with that dry coat stuff and it really did a great job keeping it from rusting. |
Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
You can always count on your truck to surprise you. But that's good to know on the steering since I had manual gear before.

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
I had to build some racks to hang parts for paint today. Hoping to get all the parts in epoxy tomorrow. Bed, grill, fenders, cowl, hood, hood hinges, rear wheel tubs, rear fender splash guards, and the LS alternator and power steering bracket.

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
It's amazing how much work goes into being able to do the work sometimes. I'm hoping to epoxy my bed on Monday evening.

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Excellent idea for temporary racks!

Did you take your bed apart? Can't remember. My bed ended up being in pretty dang good shape rust wise. Very little pitting. Quote:
Today is day three, still not done. I have the bed rails and doors left to spray. Glad I took Friday off jeez.... I'm hurtin boys, I'm living on Advil today and probably next two days... ;) :chevy: |
Re: TA_C10: Stage 1

Update - Steering Shaft / Rag Joint Complete
Got the steering shaft installed. New rag joint came in. The new rag joint was a larger diameter as you can see in the photos below. It still took some manipulating however, had to use a little persuasion to get it started then it slid right on. I lined up the section in the joint that was smoothed(no teeth) with the flat end on the steering gear shaft. Then of coarse after I got the shaft installed, I noticed I forgot the retaining collar for the top part of shaft, so i had to take it back off again and beat the shaft off the steering column with a big rubber mallet... Then I finished the shaft and slid the steering column back down where it needed to be and noticed it got scratched/chipped by the firewall collar rubbing on it while i was doing all this work... Whatever. Easy fix but dang it..... Old joint http://i.imgur.com/zIiOYPlh.jpg New joint http://i.imgur.com/uEjJFrBh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/bT4UJIph.jpg http://i.imgur.com/1Z2q4yxh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/nxkX0A5h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/I8QG6jnh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/B1RV9Yyh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/djNTzVdh.jpg :chevy: |
Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Killer progress man.

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Where did you get that shift indicator? That will match my 4L80E perfect.
I just ordered a new rag joint and my rebuilt van conversion column is on order and I'm hoping it all goes together. |
Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
70shortfleet built the column for me. I asked for the indicator. It's also been shorten 2" for my height, tilt, and he shipped with cruise control turn signal. He does great work.

Update - Brakes
This thing can now stop on it's own! I fought leaks for 2 days. But it was all my fault really. But there was a union that was ruined because of the line flare, it wasn't even so when it made it's impression inside the union it was angled and didn't seal. I had to re-bend both of the SS lines going from frame to prop valve. Actually wasn't as bad as I though. They aren't perfect but they will do. I was able to straighten the lines completely and then start over using a large socket to make my pigtail coils. Check out post 395 to see the before pics of the SS brake lines before I re-bent them. http://i.imgur.com/Lm3AHfgh.jpg I ended up cutting the flares off both sides of this union. I got a compression union from local hardware store to replace. It sealed perfectly and I think the compression union was a better choice anyways. http://i.imgur.com/U9aDywxh.jpg This guy, the crush washers that came with the kit didn't have thick enough washers. Only one thick washer... So the passenger side sealed just fine. The driver side ended up leaking like crazy so I doubled up the washers on the caliper side. Sealing just find now. I don't think your supposed to double them up but it's all I had. http://i.imgur.com/jCOX2uTh.jpg :chevy: |

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
I remember having the same issues on my dad's stainless lines. Almost every fitting had a leak, but eventually we got them sealed up by loosening, tightening, loosening, tightening, and tightening more than we thought necessary. We had the most trouble with the banjo bolts but eventually got them to seal up. I'm nervous about a couple of my flares that I made on mine. I guess we'll see what happens.
Stainless looks a lot nicer than mild steel! |

I fought like 5 different leaks in the system. Felt like SS was the wrong way to go at that point but then I found out I just didn't tighten 3 of them. Then the one union that I had to replace, it wasn't bad after I thought about the compression sleeves. And the caliper banjo crush washers were an easy fix too, just had to go to store to get correct stuff. I bought a $30 pneumatic brake bleeder kit from HF that is really cool. Bottle sits on MC, open the valve, it keeps the fluid full for you. Then you go to each wheel like normal and the air hose creates vacuum and pulls the fluid and air out for you pretty quick. I like it  EDIT: I forgot to mention also that I just dropped off my tailgate, one of the front fenders, and drivers bed side for metal repairs. Fender has rust holes and few other small things to fix, bed side has a big dent/crease from the bumper hitting it at some point in its life, and the tailgate needs a new outer skin, it wasn't worth fixing. I am running out of time and need help so I decided to let a local guy fix these for me. I still have some work to do on the other pieces but this is the big stuff and he can do a better job while I put the rest of truck together. . |
Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Is there any reason besides weight transfer and aesthetics to mount your battery down on the frame rail? Which drop out tray did you get if you don’t mind sharing. I’m debating wether or not to do this also.

I like the idea of it relocated too, I can re-route the battery cables the way I want. I plan to route them pretty close to this idea: http://i.imgur.com/XXGNSjmh.jpg And the battery box came from Amazon store. It's a drop box. It's SS and seems well built. Here is the link and some pics: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 http://i.imgur.com/oRAZ0L1h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/XoLuwpHh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/2BxEXYOh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/8KcCtE4h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/6dmqVssh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/BSPsryzh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/uhySyYIh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/JkvXAGLh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/fZDO8Wjh.jpg :chevy: |

Update - Driveshaft and Wiring Harness
Driveshaft is now shortened and all new u-joints installed. I had a local driveline shop do it from a LS shop recommendation. Cost me $220 for all. http://i.imgur.com/U05nVwoh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ZcGOC2Qh.jpg And I sent back my wire harness to brothers and they swapped it out for me to the classic version. There is quite a bit more in this box. Very nice and I am anxious to get started installing. http://i.imgur.com/Bx1pTOFh.jpg :chevy: |
Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
I'm glad to see that you exchanged your harness for the classic update, you'll be glad you did. Installing mine has been pretty easy.

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
That really does look like a well built box plus it's a nice bonus to be cheaper than most. Thanks for the awesome detailed pics. I'm still on the fence about it for my situation. This will be the first truck I've ever had air ride on and I'm thinking, worst case scenario here, would be able to have access to the battery if catastrophic failure were to occur and the truck is flat on the bump stops?
In regard to the rewire, both you and Potter are making me want to keep up with the Jones'. My Uncle bought this truck new and was an electrician by trade so the original harness looks very good, but its still almost half a century old. Then there is always the argument "might as well since I'm this deep in it". I think the best price I've found on the AAW kit is $539., unless you know better? |

Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
I used that on my last build. Seemed like a quality piece too. It was on up the firewall near the passenger side so I could run straight down to the starter. Core support is a good idea to and easier if you need a jump.

Update - Vintage Air - Front Drive Accessories
Well I spent most the weekend on drugs trying not to get sick, lot's of vitamin c, shots of flonase and 24 hour zyrtec everyday for last 5 days and it worked. I never got real sick just mainly felt like i was gonna be and hardly any energy. So I just cleaned the garage out last couple days and organized all my stuff better. That is a big task let me tell ya, sucked. So tonight after finishing rest of that, I decided to install my 2010 camaro mid-mount A/C bracket for Sanden 709 compressor from vintage air. Wasn't too hard. Follow instructions and study the diagrams is all there is to it. It's cool how they figured out you buy a certain tensioner pully and swap its pulley for another pulley they provide(VA) and boom, it all works together just right. I mounted the compressor 90 degree left, didn't think I was going to want my a/c lines on the top but maybe I do, we will see how it looks another time, might switch that. Also installed the LS alt/ps bracket. Cleaned up the alternator and PS pump that came with my engine and installed them too. Starting to look like a complete engine again  Pics for your viewing pleasure: http://i.imgur.com/KyF2SB4h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/mrb46rEh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/s5Lcohih.jpg http://i.imgur.com/dJ5bWHPh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/RIifRmUh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/hnWbOlNh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/g74z2zwh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/8723V5Dh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/tIen8oih.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ZWrp1FMh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ZoaPhQTh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/s9eO2qFh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ai5AXjZh.jpg :chevy: |
Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
I also got my new parking brake cable retainer from GMCPauls! It's the little things like this bracket that I lost that really make a big difference. I think I threw my original one away still clamped to the old cable....
I started by prying the clamp open to get it over the cable. http://i.imgur.com/LkX42K3h.jpg Then I took a pair of channel locks and slowly pinched it back down over the cable. Installed the bolt and pin. http://i.imgur.com/PE6YSE9h.jpg Then I got back under truck and adjusted the double nuts on the parking brake cables and all done. Works like OE  http://i.imgur.com/g5xzs4uh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/dbuLPl7h.jpg |
Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Quick update on my power steering too. So after installing I noticed the PS pump return line looked pretty twisted and bent. Figured I was gonna have to get a new one. Then I figure out if I bent it down just a little more the return line could route right through an existing frame hole! Before it was like 1/2 inch from the frame. Now I can get a hose on it no prob.
http://i.imgur.com/z0sDDzyh.jpg http://i.imgur.com/1ngZrdCh.jpg This is before I bent it down a bit. http://i.imgur.com/35iPq69h.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ISZ2nNSh.jpg :chevy: |

I'm right there with you! Wiring, plumbing, brake cables, etc.
Let us know how the Kwik brackets work out once you have it running - you're probably aware that some of us have had trouble with them squealing. |
Re: TA_C10: Stage 1
Tons of time to do all that. Lookin good. You will be driving her before long.
