SoCal ping, guys!

2008 was a disaster for me, for lots of reasons, but I'm going to be checking in again on a more regular basis now, if I can. Thanks to VDOG for keeping things going all this time ... I'm sorry I wasn't able to help.

Anyone interested in any kind of encounter near La Crescenta/Montrose/Glendale/Burbank/Sunland and I'll be there if I can, even if it's just for ten minutes, or whatever.

The 1994 K1500 Silverado (short bed, step side, ext. cab, 5.7L, Z71 and tow package) is still going and still towing the trailer, at just over 190K miles. I'll probably be dropping her with a new mechanic on Foothill Blvd. for service this week (a few issues going on that might leave me on the side of the road if I don't do something about it).

Greetings to all, and good luck with your truck!

Thanks for the support Kex. Now as before if you put a meet together, we will show up. We just need a date and time, and giving enough notice, the more trucks that will show up.

I'm late to this thread but here in San Diego. My 68 C10 is not currently running but my 67 Camaro is ready to go. My truck's getting a new intake, carb, HEI, water pump, fuel pump, front suspension etc. Should be on the road soon. I'll be at the Poway Transmissions car show with my Camaro on September 12, 2009. Check out MotorHeadMadness.com for more info.

Gentlemen:
Whats going on, Its been a lil quiet in here other than the San Diego people.
I'd like to know how your truck projects are coming along. I'll start it off, mine im losing intrest and due to the economy, money is short. Even though im not alone, everyone is tightening there belts due this economy, but since I gave myself a 3 year goal, I will be 50 so if my truck is not done or close, it will be sold, parted out or junked.
Thats my issue, anyone else?

Re: SoCal checkin' in

Vdog, I can certainly feel your pain as far as money is concerned, but that is not stopping me from having fun doing stuff for my truck just that my plans might need to change and that I need to be more creative making/doing stuff. Now mine is never going to be a show truck so the only 'standard' I need to live up to is mine which is easy lol. Why, set the goal though? isn't working on the truck supposed to be the major part of the "journey" or are you looking to just get it done and then cruise with it? That's cool too but it might leave you itching to do another one later on lol. Anyways my little sappy words of encouragement, dont't give up, don't sell it, don't junk it!

If you dont have one already, how about starting a build thread? it's free and I am sure you got a camera right? I know I always enjoy reading other people's build and learn alot too! Just a thought

Thanks for the words. yea mine is not going to be a show truck neither, but I have owned it for almost 12 years and it seems like its never going to get done. I like working on the truck but my body is telling me other things.
Somedays are fun others are frustrating. I have a few post on what I was doing but I guess I should put them together. I also still need the truck so I cant just tear it down for now, probably why im frustrated.
But thanks for the encourging words. Im still in the game for now.

1964C10 10-12-2009 02:51 PM

Re: SoCal checkin' in

I am kinda in the same boat, my truck needs to stay roadable since it is parked on the street, so any major teardown is not really possible. What I do in the "off" time is some planning etc so when I do get a chance to dig into the truck I have a good gameplan together. Hey the truck might be good therapy for your body, I do computer work all day so I do the work to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome and does help. Definitely but a build thread together!

LOL!!!
I work on computers in the daytime and Fedex at night. So coming from a tech like me, I guess I should not complain. Thanks my friend.

Anytime bud! Besides it works well with the wife too, saying that truck work is therapy, now if I can just get the IRS to see it as a tax deduction and get the insurance company to pay for parts as needing them for treatment, I am all set LOL

My wife is very supportive in fact she paid for my lowering kit. I know once its done I will never get her out of it. Insurance company, dont get me started on that, AAA is covering it, but I wont get much if its in a wreck.
I looked at Grundy, and therre agreed value was around 8500 full coverage for 150 a year.
So I will so change companies.

Re: SoCal checkin' in

Im serriously thinking about being done with this project. My exhaust leak, this whole time has been 4 lose bolts under the plugs on the passenger side.
I have changed the cam, and broke a stud while doing that, replace the heads, and as I was installing the balancer, I broke the tool and now a bolt is stuck in my crankshaft that I cant get out. United Engine sells a long block recondition for 595 with core,
220hp. All this drama for 4 bolts. Im either going that way or im done with the truck.

DON'T GIVE UP

maybe even a little heat might help !
put up some pictures and i a sure we will find some answers

Dont give in buddy. I went through the same crap right after I wrecked my burb...and now I drive it everyday!

VDOG 05-11-2010 03:42 AM

Re: SoCal checkin' in

Ok let me explain, I had an exhaust leak since August or Sept. After describing it to a few, it was said I had a bad cam. Pulled the topend off the truck, replace the cam, as I tighten the rocker polly lock, I torqued it down too much and it snapped. So I had to pull both heads, might as well get them freshen up. As I used my breaker bar to losen the bolts, when I got to the first 4 head bolts over the plugs, when I put the bar to break the torque, it turned, it was loose, very loose, in fact the next 3 were the same. So the exhaust leaking and the noise like a elf is in my motor hammering stuff. That was my problem.

So ok heads went to the shop, was told 475 for complete job, not spending that on the 283. Got some other heads of my 350, will install them instead.
Once on I need to install the timing cover, but oil pan is on. 12 years of gasket not being removed and you cant take the oil pan out without removing the cross member. So after pulling the starter, removing the pan bolts and destroying the gasket cause the timing cover goes on first, I still have to clean the pan of the old gasket.

So I move to the balancer, I thought I had it on straight, when I used the pulley install tool, it expanded and broke. Leaving the other part of the tool screwed into my crankshaft.

All this drama becaues 2 shops and 3 muffler shops all missed this. So United Engine has this special

http://www.unitedengine.com/index.ph...mart&Itemid=55

If not this engine, then it will be sold and replaced for newer truck.

Re: SoCal checkin' in

WOW!!! 475!! I can get a set of heads done down here for 150. Dont give up she needs you!! I almost gave up on mine but i stuck to it and now when i drive her everyday it was all worth it!

coolbus4us 05-11-2010 10:31 AM

Re: SoCal checkin' in

Sucks, and ive gone through similar crap with engines before as well. Whatever you do, just do it and do what makes you happy. Driving her daily would make you happy:)

On a side note, the united engine girls look pretty good:)

VDOG 05-11-2010 11:20 AM

Re: SoCal checkin' in

LOL!! Yea, those two hotties can work on my truck anytime.
If the wife lets them. LOL

Truckdrivin

At first it was 150 to just do a valve job and replace the broken stud.
Then I got a call saying it need a complete job and the harden seats needed to be install for unleaded gas. For my 283, thats in the truck now, I did not want to spend that kind of money. Money that I dont have anyway.
Thats why I said it should go to my 350. But I need a truck right now due to the stuff were doing around the house. Once its done I can tear her down the correct way for a frame up rebuild. Its putting me behind sechedule.
