Nice new bumper! I'm robbing the one off my wife's burb for my Ochre K20 turd. LOL

Nice line up too. Most of my stuff doesn't run as well. Seems to be a trend? My wife says it's only me. LOL

Thanks everyone can’t wait for the brackets to come in so I can get that chrome mounted...

Ohh no, Ryan, not only you. 2 of my 4 don’t run:lol: well actually 3 of the 4 right now. The transmission output seal on the ‘98 is leaking fluid into the transfer case and I haven’t been motivated enough to fix it yet. Better get on that before my brother gets it. My K20 is the trooper, lately I’ve been driving it a lot more than Hagerty really appreciates. I’m about 20,000 miles away from a new company truck (6 months) when I get the new company truck I’m going to buy my current company truck to replace the ‘98. Nice Easy way to get a good late model truck for $10K-ish at about 115-120,000 miles.

Finally got my precision windshield rubber in today. Gonna try and polish the trim soon, before I take it apart and replace the rubber. More to come on that.

Another project that’s been in the making... he got a complete smile:lol: (thanks again Pete) I need to play with the alignment on the front clip a little bit, but its on there and everything works... I also added a new set of repro chrome sill plates but I don’t have a picture of that. I’ve got a few smaller things to do this truck like redoing the windshield rubber and re sealing the drip rails, and the motor swap once I get around to getting the temporary vortec 350 finished up. I’m also gonna probably drop my Dana 60 and disk 14 bolt Along with the 4” lift kit under it that I’ve got in the shop. Once all that is done I’m likely going to pull off of this truck for a while and try to get my K10 on the road.

I’ve been gathering more parts for that build lately. I’m not going to go to the same extent on that build as I have taking this one to the frame and back. The K10 is just going to get the motor currently in this truck, along with the axles that I’m pulling from this truck for now until I feel like tackling the rebuild on the 1/2 ton axles and brakes. I’ll likely add a hydraulic clutch and hydraboost to that one too. I’ve also got to fix the front frame where it cracked and was repaired at the steering box. Now that I’ve got this one pretty reliable and drivable I’m going to enjoy it for a while after I get everything I mentioned earlier done. Following all of those things, maybe sometime next year I’m going to dive into the LS swap. And then paint.

Haha well about as nice a 4 or 5 tone truck can anyway:lol: I’ve been working on getting the new glovebox liner I bought 2-3 years ago and never installed, to fit. It’s kicking my backside a little bit. I need to rearrange the hvac ducts a little bit. Might get that done tomorrow.

Funny you mention this. My Longhorn still doesn't have one in it. I have one for it but have never installed it either. I have to take off the inner hvac housings and fix that mess. One of the boys kicked them and broke some tabs. Luckily I got a parts truck that has better ones. Now to add it to the list and maybe get it done before winter. Haha

Yea I don’t blame you, that thing is a bit of a pain to get in. I didn’t get to it last weekend. I did get the new spicer axle tube seals and the carrier back in me 60 though... haven’t had much time to work on things lately, progress is still progress I suppose.

More dana 60 progress, need to round up some studs and get the hubs and rotors put back together. Still have a little paint to finish up on the lower king pins and upper king pin caps, this is just mocked up.

Keep at it. As long as you are moving forward. It will get done.

You would do that for me?

Hey wait, if we did that I wouldn't need the Dana.

The way I see it, that 60 laying around would give you a great reason to go back on the hunt for another nice Original K20!

Ha! That’s funny because I told Chevyland yesterday he wasn’t as diehard as you are because there wasn’t an empty trailer behind his RV just in case he found one to bring home. We got a laugh from that:lol:

Been a good bit since I’ve updated here, mostly because I really ain’t done much to my K20 since the spring other than drive it. That is until this week. I’ve been off from work burning the last of my vacation time for about a week and half. My dad was bugging me for Christmas ideas earlier this month and I couldn’t think of much. I remembered the blazer courtesy lights I was going to order and never got around to it. So I sent those over and he had them shipped to me.

The factory door switches and cargo light have never worked since I’ve owned it, it’s always been one of those I’ll get to it one of these days type of thing. Back around July I briefly started messing with the cargo light. At some point some one put an 1157 dual filament bulb in the cargo light socket. I pulled it out and really didn’t think much about it. Put a new one I had laying around in and obviously it didn’t work. I was having trouble getting consistent power to the socket in conjunction with the wrong bulb and not much time that day, I temporarily gave up. I had assumed that maybe the cargo light required the door switches to be functional to work properly, at that point I had not reviewed that part of the factory wiring diagrams.

So fast forward to this week. I installed the painless blazer courtesy kit as outlined in this thread.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=829247

The courtesy lights installed and work flawlessly. They are truly 100% plug and play with the factory dome light harness in the correct wire colors, as long as you have functioning factory door switches. The only issue I had was the door switches sent in the painless kit don’t fit the factory holes, they are too small. I rounded up some new switches from Napa and wired it all up good as new.
Now to the dome light. I did some research and found that obviously the 1157 is the wrong bulb. Got the right bulb put in but still no power at all this time. Next I started probing with the multi meter. Power to the switch, no power out in either position. Took the switch apart and cleaned the contacts with fine emery paper…got power to the light socket. Put it all back together with the cargo light working.
2 out of 3 of my minor electrical issues solved.

The other issue I’ve always had was no lights in the ac/heater controls. Since I was already tooled and geared up for electrical stuff I went ahead and tackled this one.
Tore the console out, had power to the grey cluster light wires but not the hvac light sockets. Cleaned both socket contacts up with the aforementioned emery cloth. The bulb closest to the ignition switch came to life. Still No dice on the cigarette lighter side. I assume that there is a factory splice in the grey wire between the cluster connector and the ignition switch side hvac light. I pulled the fuse box from the firewall, traced the cluster supply wires all the way to its source. There’s no other place that second light can get power. It has to be a factory splice like I said between the cluster plug and the ignition switch hvac light. I wasn’t about to pull the harness and in tape it to find the factory splice and inspect. I made a new splice and everything works perfect now.
Its pretty nice having the dome light, floor courtesy lights, cargo light work off of the doers like they are supposed to. Also pretty nice seeing the hvac controls at night.

I think I’m gonna focus on pulling the windshield, replacing the rubber, addressing any hidden secrets behind the rubber and putting it back together along with the dreaded re seal of the drip rails. I’ve got some leaks inside that these things should remedy.

I highly recommend the blazer courtesy lights. They are really a nice upgrade.

Here’s a few pictures. Note the black switch with corroded brass contacts (I lightly scuffed the center to show the amount of corrosion) that’s the cargo light switch.

Electrical is always fun...lol. Successful repair is gratifying though.

Re: 72 k20

Electrical has never really bothered me much. I built my own LS standalone harness for the 6.0 going in this truck. After doing that these minor things are a walk in the park haha

Man I ain’t done a thing to it other than replace a rocker in late July. It shoved the push rod thru the cup on the rocker on number 4 exhaust so it was backfiring pretty bad constantly. I had another rocker I swapped in and the pushrod was still good. Slapped it back together and it’s still running:lol: I need to get the 350 swapped into it sooner than later but I’ve been spending my extra cash on some mods for the new to me Camaro SS I traded my old SS off for back in June. I also spent some time and money getting my other new to me survivor IROC-Z running late last spring.

I’ve hauled a few loads to the dump this summer and driven it around town but that’s about it.

This winter I’d like to swap the fresh 350 into it as well as the new axles. We’ll see how it goes.

Re: 72 k20

It makes a hell of a lot of noise I can tell you that much, Larry. It was tapping so loud that I was half thinking it might have dropped an intake valve because the constant cylinder pressure coming out of the carb. (It was actually the Exhaust valve not opening causing all the built up cylinder pressure to blow past the opening and closing intake valve and up thru the carb).
It runs good now. No race car but slow and steady and still quite reliable.

Drove the ole girl for the first time down the road since the middle of last summer. Had to haul a load of home renovation junk to the dump. It ran good. I’ve used it all fall and winter around the house moving firewood from the piles out side up to the house. As soon as the weather gets a little better it’s going to get the 4” lift kit and axle swap I’ve been planning for more than 2 years. I’m pretty excited about that.
