I dropped the extra transmission and transfer case (that came with the truck) off to get rebuilt. Once I get them back I will swap both into the truck.

I mounted some KC Hilites spread beams on the lumber rack. Wired to the relay, but I need to finish wiring the switch.

The fun continues...
The super greasy crossmember and torque mount are all cleaned up, and the old transmission is out. The people at Locktite should know that their product works for decades. :hm: Attachment 2094600 Attachment 2094599 Attachment 2094601 |
Re: '72 Cheyenne K10
I believe many thread lock compounds transform into rust-tite after a number of years.

I think I have everything ready for install. New bolts for everything, 3 gallons of ATF, and all the old parts are cleaned up. Tracking says new cooler lines, kickdown cable, poly transmission/torque mounts, and gear oil will be here tomorrow.

I got the transmission and transfer case installed today. Column shifter, speedo cable, rear driveline are all hooked up. Fill tube and kickdown cable are installed. I need to hook up the transmission cooler lines (I have some found conflicting info on which line goes to which fitting on the radiator). And I still have to fill up the fluids.
But my main obstacle is that the twin stick shifters do not line up with the factory hole in the floor. They need to be forward and right of where they are. The website said GM NP205, but it wasn't specific about compatibility with a '72. I'm guessing it is designed for '73 up. I hope I can find a fabricator to help me modify these stainless shifters to make it work. I have it stuck in RWD HIGH without any shifter for now. At least I will be able to drive it. The manufacturer of the twin stick has offered to modify the handles at no charge. That's what I call customer service!
I assembled it the best I could to take more pictures and measurements for him. Attachment 2095828 Attachment 2095829 Attachment 2095830 Attachment 2095831 |

Bad news. I filled up the transmission and went for a drive around the block, and it leaks really bad from the servo. The person that rebuilt it says he will fix it next week, but it's a real bummer. It leaked a tiny bit after filling, but it was squirting out profusely while driving. Left an obvious nasty trail of fluid behind on the road too.

Darn. The modified shifter handles showed up today, but they are not going to work. They still hit the opening in the floor and can't be shifted. He's on vacation for 2 weeks, so I have to wait.

Darn 2 weeks. Isn't that the way it always goes. I think I'd have to modify them myself. Truck is looking awesome man! I love seeing an old survivor out there still working away!:metal:

Transmission leak is fixed. Just a broken o-ring. I went to the parts store for ATF and he had it fixed when I got back. We spent more time talking and drinking a beer.
Got a couple new stickers today. Attachment 2098382 Attachment 2098383 |

Third time's the charm. The modified handles work great. Now I have RWD, FWD, and 4WD in high or low range. Pretty darn cool.
