Interesting truck. A Chevrolet Extended Hood (Long Nose). They are pretty rare. This one looks like it's somewhere between '73 and '76. West Coast type truck with the Budd Wheels. Most likely will have an 8V-71 with a 13-Speed Road Ranger.

Yeah I saw a sign in the window so stopped to look, it had just Been sold at auction for $750.

Re: GM Semis

She indeed has a road ranger and is an 8V ...I doubt it is a 92 and I am not sure they made a 53 so I would guess an 8v-71. Auction site had it listed as a '74
You can just see a discharge nozzle behind the tank, that is a large cetrifugal pump (looks like a turbo)....both axles are driven.

Re: GM Semis

That auction price was a steal. Who ever bought it got a great deal. I would have paid $750 in a heart beat. A great truck to restore.

They actually made an 8V-53, but they were mostly for Marine. One would have not been available in the above truck.

Re: GM Semis

That pump behind the tank is most likely a exhaust driven pump for a type of powder such as cement carryed in a bulk tank.

Re: GM Semis

Spanners!, tell me what you know about your truck. Do you still have the ID plate? I would love to know what series and what year that is. it kind of reminds me of mine. Also yours is sporting 6 lug wheels, and in my experience GMC's ran a proprietary 5 lug pattern, what engine/transmission combo do you have ? and I am assuming you are running Air brakes ? nice looking rig at any rate.

hi,greywuuf,
all the time the truck was being checked by different people ,being shipped,,checked for customs, and checked for the DVLA for registration in the uk ,,nobody could find its proper id ,,, i had it at home ten minutes and pryed open the stuck glovebox door and the tag was inside ,,

model =HC451
she,s on a clark f460 front axle
and an eaton 2 speed rear
clark 5 speed g/box with direct drive top gear
vacume over hydralulic service brakes
and factory aftermarket trailer air brake kit.
engine is a 270
and the wheels are of ,motor,, manufacture.
it also has a genuine GMC aftermarket tachometer (rev counter)

as far as i can find out /have been told ,,she was supplied new to JEWETT FARMS at ,WILLOW,, SACRAMENTO, which is where she was found early this year when the place and contents /equipment was sold off ,, she missed going to the crusher by less than a week..
she hadnt been licenced for the road since 1976,, and hadnt been started for over 20 years..
she,s runnig now but no, brakes and very poor electrics,, all the tyres are rotten and i,m having trouble finding suitable replacements in the uk as they have now been ,phased, out allthough i gave a set away 18 months ago thinking i would never need them,
tachometer photo

genuine milage ????

i hope all the above is of interest ,
i do have a few more pictures but they need sorting as they were taken in a rush the truck has only been home less than 48hrs,
cheers,
,mike,,

Re: GM Semis

Thank you so much for the info, it is as I suspected, your truck is a full "series" larger than mine ( mine being a 350, though for some reason it has 400 or larger front fenders on it ) I believe I have the same "hydrovac" brakes but alas I only have the 4 speed main trans ( with a two speed timken rear) Odd that the motor wheels are 6 lug, though probably good. I know what you mean about the 20" tube type tires ( I can get them here but they are NOT cheap)

Have you introduced yourself over at the old GMC forum ? Lots of good info there and they guys would LOVE to see your new rig.

Re: GM Semis

as far as the poor electrics, I am fairly certain that truck originally was a 6 volt positive system. you also have the next step up engine from mine... mine is a f350-24 with the 248 you have a -27 ( also made the 5 speed available)

spanners 10-29-2013 03:30 AM

Re: GM Semis

hi, dan yes i,m on the old gmc forum and ,stovebolt,
i think 1951 was the first year for 12v electrics on the 451, .. its 7,30 am here so i,m off outside soon to fit a new ign, switch then i can run her without the bit of wire and alligaitor clip ,,lol, then test out some moe electrical ,gremlins,,
thats the only good side of being semi-retired due to ill health it means if i feel like it and the weathers fit , i can go and play out ,,lol,,,

greywuuf 10-29-2013 03:58 AM

Re: GM Semis

one up me on everything, I have a 350 you have a 450 I have a 4 speed you have a 5, I have a 248 you have a 270 I have 5 lugs you have 6 I have a '50 you have a 51!.

Glad to hear she is running again, I am all to familiar with the wire and clips ( my genny was toast and instead of brushes and a rebuild i have a 12 alternator and a lot of interesting wires ) but that was just to make her run. did you have any trouble with sticking the valves ? I bent a push rod rolling it off the trailer... it tried to get away ( rolled over the chock) so i stuffed it in gear and that was enough.... one new pushrod though and she runs a treat !

spanners 10-29-2013 04:14 AM

Re: GM Semis

dosn,t seem to be any engine troubles at all ,other than things are a bit sticky and stiff like the choke cable and bit an bobs the air system even makes air!!!
and the two speed rear even shifts as it should allthouth the knobs broke ,,
if the milometer/odometer is true then she,s only done
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/data/500/test_7.jpg
just run in ,,lol,
