And we thank you. That is what he wanted, but terminology just got goofy.People have been calling wheelcovers hubcaps forever and they are wrong.it`s all about the education here and fun.I just don`t like seeing people shunning correct information.GM calls them torque boxes.

2) Inner rocker
3) Torsion box

ALL different, ALL separate and ALL necessary.

I posted a pic of a replacement pair of TORSION BOXES.

Do you happen to know what size spanner is required to take the bolts out of the end caps of the rocker boxes?

If your asking about these, they're 9/16th.

To make my life easier during this repair, I welded the nuts inside. ;)

Looks like an outer, an inner but not torsion box.

Depending on your focus, there are 'other' ways to support the tub. ;)

Ok, so what are some of my options? Would more pictures be helpful? I can try and take some tonight. I would like to try and do it right, and correct some of this mess.

I think a lot of this type of thing has to do with what part of the country you live in. Here on the West coast I've never heard of a hubcap being called anything other than a hubcap. If I heard someone say wheelcover I would think of those things you put over your wheels and tires when you paint a car. I ran into this back when I was in high school and a kid moved over here from Chicago. When we would ask for a "Pop" he would look confused and ask for a "Soda". I don't think anyone is necessarily right or wrong it's just a regional thing sometimes.

no there are propper names for these items. These names come from GM not some catalog depending on location. Using the correct terminology will corrct the issue. gm on the spid calls them wheel covers so if I ask for a wheel cover there is no confusion. ist in black and white. if I ask for info on a rocker box and or panel there is no confusion. gm has laied it out for us. outer, inner, torsion. The correct termonalogy is there. its has nothing to do with the fact that I am in texas and its all if I ask for a coke I dont mean coke cola I mean whatever soda pop you may have.

Re: Rocker box pictures

So what's a hubcap? They may be wheelcovers according to GM but maybe Ford or Chrysler calls them hubcaps. Someone somewhere has to call them hubcaps or else that term would not be so widely used. I bet if there was a survey done, more people would know what a hubcap is over wheelcover.

70 Suburban 04-07-2009 11:22 PM

Re: Rocker box pictures

you are correct... but we are on a gm site....... so wheelcovers over caps....In general conversation I may call them hub caps......but a hub cap is icorrect... see its like this... a wheel cover is just that a wheel cover.. a hub cap is just that.. the little round thing on the end of the spindle (knuckle for those that realy know what it is) is a cap.the little disk that only coverd the lugs and knuckle cap is a hub cap.

I believe the dead horse can be drug/dragged away now.

jaros44sr 04-08-2009 06:37 AM

Re: Rocker box pictures

Don't drag the horse away guite yet, no,no,no, the hubcap only covers the wheel bearings...hence, the wheel hub, the hub cap. Now drag it away

If you want to keep things stock and use your blazer as a daily driver, wanting it to look original, I'd say you have two option's.
1) buy a factory replacement set of torsion boxes as pictured above.
2) fab up and support the tub in some other manner but keep it within the stock area using tubing or similar.
Option 1 would be the easiest IMO.

OR...if it's a wheeler kind of ride, you could do some basic support above the floor.
Another way would be to build a cage and tie the tub into that for structured support.

These pics are of my off road blazer, torsion boxes were long gone when I got it and I was going for maximum clearance.
I completely cut out everything, including the rocker boxes but still had to support the firewall, here's what I did.

The assembly manual refers to the option sheet on the glove box door as a service parts identification plate, not decal so you should use proper terminology for that.

The fact of the matter is that everyone knows what the term rocker box applies to, you wouldn't use that term describing a part on a 1/2 ton.

UMM NO its a S.ervice P.arts I.dentification D.ecal.. not SPIP. its SPID.

The reason there is a debate is that not everyone knows what it is... We have already stated that the part in question is not on a 1/2 ton or any ton TRUCK. its a blazer spicific part.

I might have to take you up on that offer...

Still considering getting a welder. Need to sell a few more things first (compromised with the GF that I'd only spend the money I made selling other things on this.) Anyone want to buy a tonka truck?
