The truth is we used to build these things until we were sick of them (about 15 million squares total); all different shapes and sizes. I used to see trucks going by when I would close my eyes at night. Any truck is 1 of 1 when you break it down far enough. The Marti report makes it's money that way - I saw a Mustang of some sort that was broken down until it was the only "blue one" with the optional block heater. Its to the point of ridiculousness. I suspect there was a 4x4 TBI M20 trans or two (thousand) in that mix. That's not really my thing, which is why I ordered mine as a 2wd with the MY6 trans. That IS my thing. K BTW - 900,000 trucks is about right. That's one per minute, 8 to 10 hours a day, over a six year period. |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
I get what you are saying Keith. None of these trucks are really rare. I was more referring to the seemingly more popular '87 year, and the fact that it's fairly unmolested.
I have only ever had the opportunity to drive 1 MY6/A833 truck. It was a much more enjoyable driver than a SM465 truck. Unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to buy one. I could start another discussion by stating they are "rare"! ;) Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Looks to be sold, wonder who bought it  ;)

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Rare not rare. I wouldn't say Holy Grail but it is a nice looking truck. Bottom line is nice ones are getting harder to find.

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
You cant find one close to that nice around here for sale ,not that I am in the market but always looking .

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
To me the stepside 87 is worth more than the red and black fleetside. Its original and I think fairly rare. There could not have been many built in 87 that were short stepside 4x4 and a manual trans. If that's The type of truck that you like it could be your holy grail truck. Every one has an idea of what their holy grail is .
The other truck has been restored but not to original specs. Paint isn't the right height, doesn't contour correctly at the front fender, interior isn't stock, etc. Its a nice one but not my taste. That code 29 dark blue stepside would look super nice restored but is nice the way it is. |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Keith if you try hard enough anything could be called rare because of its options. But to me anything mass production is not rare and never will be.I think some people want to brag they have something special which is cool but not really worth anymore because of it to me.

Congrats! I love that it's going to my home state, and that someone that can appreciate what it is will be taking care of it. Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Well for what its worth, I thought it was a nice truck for the price. I know here in Arizona the price is fair but it was in North Carolina and I think the value of anything is relative to the place where you lay your head. Thanks for posting a cool Step side.

**~* Reviving an ol thread to thank the original poster again.
Thank you one again for the heads up on a really nice truck Mr Chevy 4X4!! Just arrived back up here in Maine a couple days ago and I was very excited to fire up the ol 87 after sitting for the last few months. It's a pleasure to drive and I'm thankful to own it! Hats off to you  |

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Im a little late to the party BUT-lets look at this another way: If you were to build that truck using all GM NOS parts assuming you even had a rust free truck to start with, typical prices for NOS parts that you would need as far as Ive sold in the last 2 years to just handpick a few are:
NOS dashpad $1200 NOS doors LH/RH pair $1500 NOS fenders LH/RH pair $1200 NOS hood $800 NOS cluster bezel $350 NOS dash vent bezel $250 We are at $5300 alone in a few select NOS parts. So my point here is IF you are in the market for a super clean original square-you should realize what the cost of these same parts in NOS condition could potentially cost you....then suddenly an $8500 square doesnt seem too out of line. Having said that, is a restored 87 TBI truck worth upwards of 20K? Well imo NOT if its built with LMC parts-but if built with GM NOS parts, then Id say yes. So sure nice squares may not seem to be rare but one could argue finding certain NOS parts ARE!! So, in the end $8500 doesnt seem too bad of a price does it? |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
I found my holy grail of squarebody chevy trucks on craigs list a few years ago , it was about as bare bones truck as gm made that year if I remember right it was a 1987 r1500 short bed v6 three on the tree and think it even had manual steering and no power brakes don't hold me to the steering and brake thing though , I bet the spid sticker had one line
RPO lol cheap bastard |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Had to chuckle.
Holy grail? Mine would be a 1987 GMC 3/4 ton, 4.3 700R4 cruse tilt air with manual locks, in blue or silver thank you. Just because. I think my 87 6.2 diesel longbed with every option except bed lamp is probably 'rare'. And not particularly desirable. My 81 GMC 3/4 ton with HD cooling, locking rear diff, sliding rear window and NO other options (including lack of power steering, and has power brakes only because it's a 3/4 ton) in Carmine Red is a lot rarer. Who else has a 3/4 ton with 250CID, 3OTT, no rear bumper or spare tire or radio, no power steering, and factory sport mirrors (cause they were actually cheaper..)? |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Holy grail would be an all original, less then 50miles from new thats sat in a climate controlled warehouse its entire life with zero scratches what so ever type of truck. The linked craigslist ad was just a nice truck. Zero rust is standerd for the southwest, people still daily drive them out here.

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Glad I could help, and even more so that you are enjoying the truck. I'm always looking, and will continue to post when I find trucks as nice as this one is. Post up some pictures when you have time.

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Just because something is odd doesn't make it rare or desirable. My original post was in reference to the fact that this was a fairly hard to find specimen, and it IS highly desirable. I doubt you can find 5 1987 short bed step side 4x4's for sale across the entire country, much less one in the condition that truck is in.
Personally I could care less what you think about my assessment. I'm just happy a board member here got the truck, and is enjoying it. Mike |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
On rare occasions I sneeze a little too hard and end up crapping my pants. Although rare, it's not desirable. To each his own. :tim::tim:

Love it. Crazy how clean it is!

Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
A Holy Grail would be a 1973 454, short bed, 4x4 , Trailering Special, Silverado in that condition
or A 1976 Orange or Black Sport, 454, short bed, 4x4, trailering special, Silverado in that condition or A short bed desert fox in any condition with any engine. That was a clean truck and worth way more then $5,000 in Colorado. It was in no way a Holy Grail truck. It had no special options, nothing special to make it rare other then being in good shape. I would have driven to OK to get it at $5,000. I have $3500 in two parts truck and still need fenders and hood. I will have $20,000 in mine to get it a little nicer then that one. Lot better engine going in mine. |
Re: Craigslist find...the Holy Grail of squares - NOT MINE
Very nice 57napco. Please let me know when I can add it to my collection!!! :)

79 short step side 2wd four speed manual V8 truck $3500. No mention of the demon rust. Has some questionable modifications and some that would have to be seen in person to decide. Just a transfer case and axle away from the holy grail.
