Either option is a great addition (barn doors or liftgate) The ones recommended in the other link are a bit more expensive but we know they will work and support the load. We are going to try the Rock Auto struts on GCBURDIC's Burb and my Blazer to see how good they work on the heavier liftgates. GCBURDIC already has the ball studs. I just have to take him an extra set of the struts I bought. So updates will be coming soon.

I'm looking for the factory lift for my clam doors any of you that is going to the new set up I'm looking to buy a set of the ones for the Lift gate not the ones for the barn doors

I have a set from a Blazer liftgate already removed. You may want to check to see if they will work. OR... My dad will have a set from a Burb liftgate. I will let you know when we get his swapped.

Don't throw away those old sliders. !5 years from now someone will want to restore a truck and might really want them to be 100% accurate and they'll be even rarer than GMC 1500 V-6 fender emblems.

Nice write up Jeff. I remeber having the old slides on my barn door suburban and you're right they are a pain.

Please post the results with the lift gate. If the supports the load I put this setup on my current Burb.

Results were positive. My dad did it on his and he said it holds it up good. I haven't seen it myself yet.

Thanks for the great write-up, did mine in like 6 minutes. Took me longer to find a #2 screwdriver. I got my struts on Amazon for like $12 bucks total.

This is an awesome fix. If you don't mind a Burb guy from the 60-66 forum asking, has anyone tried this on an earlier generation Burb? From what I can tell in the images it looks like it would work. For $12 bucks I may just risk it and give it a try. I'm not sure if my barn door sliders are the same as the 67-72 style, but mine suck too. Thanks.

Well... if you didn't already know, my Burb gets used (and moderately abused) HAHA! :metal:
I broke a ball stud this weekend while loading firewood in the back for a camping trip. With that said, my struts only have about 40 lbs of lifting force and they broke the stud by opening too quickly. Use caution when opening. haha! I guess I will be buying another ball stud this week. (I actually need 5 because I am ready to do this mod to my blazer)

GCBURDIC and I were invited as feature trucks to the LMC Truck All Chevy Supernationals in June. While we were there, the LMC guy noticed my gas struts and was all over it checking it out. We even told him about the forum and this thread. He even emailed me after the show to ask me a few questions.
So, I got the new LMC last week and as I was thumbing through it last night, guess what I saw... (and I don't even get any kickbacks) :lol)

That's sorta cool, but at the same time I'm not sure how I feel about his just taking your idea and running with it.
I'm a carpenter by trade and I do a lot of side work. I learned that when a customer starts asking to many questions about how to do something, shut up. Cause it usually means they are just picking your brain and plan on doing it themselves.
It is true that you already put it out on the internet. Did they at least say they were going make a kit using your idea?

Has anyone done this lately? Looking to see where they sourced parts from since the links are old on this thread. Amazon only has one strut left, wondering if there is a newer and/or stronger version available. And maybe I'm being cheap but $16 bucks shipped for a 6 pack of ball studs doesn't seem right, but that's what I could find.

I'm seriously considering doing this on my 69 Sub... Jury is still out though.

I've been using that site to look up the struts and then order them from Rock auto since Rock is cheaper :lol:

Resurrecting this old thread to ask if anyone has done this conversion recently. It seems that neither of the recommended parts (struts / ball studs) are available any longer.

I found some 10mm 1/4"-20 ball studs at Orr & Orr (part# H-9524) but they are $1.50/each and the four needed don't qualify for their minimum order amount. If anyone wants to do a group order, let me know.

Regarding the struts, I found the Stabilus Lift Supports 4B-877865 which are just shy of 13" collapsed and 22.3" extended (which is close) but unknown compression force. Any thoughts on compatibility would be appreciated, thanks.
