Re: I finally got my 2wd

I finished parting this beast out today. The frame is servicable, but not as nice as I had hoped. Some repairs will be needed. I have a few parts to sell, but not much. For my $150 I have a 72 2wd frame, a very good under dash wiring harness, rear view mirror, stainless windshield trim, a complete set of deluxe side marker lights, a servicable rear seat with both brackets and belts, a wiring harness from the fuse box to the top, a console that needs the hinge area repaired, a single wall top that might be salvageable (needs some holes filled, window replaced, and will still have flat spots from board being bolted onto it) and a hatch that has a couple cracks but is repairable.

Is it a gold mine? Nope. Was it worth it? You bet! I might even clear at least $50 from the parts I'm selling.

Re: I finally got my 2wd

After tearing a biceps tendon in July, I was very limited in what I could do. All my projects were put on hold. Well, now I can do a little more every day and it's healing up, so I started getting back to work.

This weekend I was able to remove the front and rear suspension from the longbed truck frame I had and get it onto the blazer frame. I still need to bolt up the front end, ran out of time today. It went pretty well with the help of a tractor bucket lifting the frames.

Since this is really a project for later, my goals are just to get the chassis together enough to be a roller (almost there), set the body on the frame (temporarily), see if the one top I have will clean up enough to set on the tub, then cover it up and let it sit until my C-10 is painted and back on the road (hopefully next summer).

I would still like to do the engine swap on the junkyard jimmy and fix the brakes, but don't know if I'll get the time. Since the injury put a crimp on all the honey-do projects also, the wife is making those my priority. Unfortunately, the summers get short up north here.

Wish me luck.

Stinks about the bicep injury - best of luck now that you are 'getting back to it'.

:)

Thanks guys.

I got done with work early today and my son was around to help, so we headed out to the farm to see if we could make it look like a blazer again.

As stated above, the chassis was bolted back together enough to make it a roller. The wheels are from my C-10 and the plain steelies are on the C-10 now while body work is being done.

In this picture you can see the tub and my jimmy in the weeds.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_5017.jpg

Then we got the tub sat on the frame. No body mount bushings, or even bolts, just resting there.

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/IMG_5021.jpg

Then I got the rusted windshield frame off the beater top, and set that on the tub.

The top is on, but not bolted down. The windows go up, but the doors won't open. They are kinda stuck at the moment until the top is straightened out and bolted into the correct spot. For now though, it is a roller, not spread all over my friends farm, the tub is not in the weeds any more. And most important of all, I feel better that I was able to get it this far. This is the parts of 5 different vehicles, 6 if you count the doors. At least 7 for when a front clip is found, then another for when I find the engine/tranny I want.

I can't wait, but I will.

Now you have me wanting to go down to the local wrecking yard and see if that Jimmy tub is still sitting there that I should have bought a couple of months ago. Hopefully they put it in their "someone might give real money for this" section.

Looks like some good progress. I suppose you will have them both done by x-mas???

Or not...

Got any pix of how you got the tub off the ground and onto the chassis?

That would have been a site to see.

I have to replace my body mounts on the Blue Blazer in my project list so I can start doing some body work - not looking forward to it though. :(

Congrats on getting that far - looks great.

No pics, I was kinda busy operating the tractor. It's easy enough. I use a piece of steel C channel that fits from bed rail to bed rail. If you place it right at the front of the bed rail, it's pretty well balanced with the doors on. The C channel has a couple holes cut through a couple feet from each end. The holes have a slot to towards the middle, that it the for the chain link to slide into. Then just hook the chain to the bucket lift on the front of the tractor and carefully move it around. We got it close and rolled the chassis under it. Then just put enough lift on to shift it around where we wanted it. My son is 13, but big for his size and he can keep it fairly flat and steady.

Believe it or not, the top was harder to do this way because it was much higher and I should have tried a different way to place the straps.

The shipping would not be worth it. They are not perfect. You're better off finding good truck doors and converting them yourself. The info is available on the board here somewhere.

I have 3 vehicles, and I have a total of 11 doors. I'm going to have to sort them out and get rid of some.

Re: I finally got my 2wd

I'm going to breathe some life back into this thread. It has been a long time and plans have changed. What I initially thought would be my foray into fabrication became a third wheel. At some point I realized that between my C-10 and my 4x4 Jimmy I had all really wanted in trucks. Pretty much anything I wanted to do with this project I could do to either of the other two.

So, what next? Put the parts I have together and see what I can get for it. Simple as that. Between parting out other trucks and blazers, I came across another tub that was in better shape than the black jimmy pictured above, but not as good as the yellow tub. Since I decided to keep the Jimmy, all of my better quality parts were used on that project. So the yellow tub is on the jimmy (build thread in my sig). The dark blue tub from another truck went to this one. It has a solid rear floor, needs repairs on the rockers, windshield frame, and some in the bed sides, but overall for this neck of the woods a decent start.

The replacement parts I have been getting are mostly rust free originals, not an easy task up here. But today was a good day. I had 68 or GMC fenders I found over the past year or so, and got a 68 grill from the local junkyard today. I found other good parts on craigslist and from scrounging junkyards all over the state the past couple years. I have a solid tailgate also.

So over the next couple months, I'll tinker with it. Make it look like a solid project for restoration and see what I can get back out of it. Not really looking for a profit, I'd be happy breaking even. I have a short list of things to get the jimmy street legal and my C-10 should be getting paint this month. I'm not lacking in projects, just time.

Maybe one of the moderators could move this thread to the blazer projects board for me.

Probably not, we'll see. These things can take on a life of their own sometimes. Heres some seats for it.

And some pics from last fall. I'll post pics of the front clip some time soon.

This should be an interesting 2wd build to follow. The original red body looked rebuildable to me though!:metal: Subscribed!
