Re: Gary's S10

Okay here's the whole thing from the start.

My Friend Gary was looking to buy one of those bolt on 6-link kits, and he was asking me my opinion. I'm not really a fan of the one he wanted, and I said I would build him a custom one for not much more. It caught his interest, and he came up with a lot of questions. He's rather picky, anal even, as am I. And I was able to talk him into letting me TIG weld most of the components and do some kind of cool stuff along the way. He's going to do the front himself, I am only in charge of the rear suspension.

So he brought the truck up yesterday around 3 or 4, and we put it in the shop and pulled the bed off. Today I began disassembly, and started the notches. Hoping to have it notched by the end of tomorrow.

Heres a picture he took when it arrived.

And today.

And I will be building a 5-link based around this.

Got the notches installed.

Boxed the rear frame and built a rear cross member for the lift bars and air tank.

Air tank will fit under the bed, and there is enough room to run the fittings behind the bumper or a roll pan and still work on them with the bed on.

I finished boxing the frame and built lower link bars.

I am setting the suspension up at a 5" ride height, with the wheelbase moved back 1/4" from stock. Gary tells me some of the bolt on kits shove the driveline into the transmisson on standard cabs.

He drove it home today, and he said he will be plumbing the air system tomorrow and hopefully putting his bags and control arms on the front soon after.

Re: Gary's S10

Man that turned out pretty bad ass. I love how you do simple things like with the dimple dies, the offset wishbone, and tank/compressor brackets that really help to bring it all together. Best of all it works with the stock parts effectively.

Great work as always Seth. I'm starting my 60hr/wk schedule today and I'm hoping to be able to save some money for my truck to come and see you ASAP.

WOW.. great work. Is a spark sheild next up??

Re: Gary's S10

A spark shield for what? The gas tank?

Anyways, I'm done with the truck now, that's all I had to do. I've got the next project up on jackstands waiting to be cut up tomorrow.

I also built a rack that holds all my TIG wire that bolts to the side of the welder.

Re: Gary's S10

not sure if 'spark sheild' is the right term. a spark maker. sacraficial plate under the bumper to make some sparks when dropped..

great work btw.

Re: Gary's S10

I guess I would call that a drag block. Which he said he will probably install right behind the cab.

Why is it necessary to make sparks?

I agree, What is the concept/philosophy behind this?

I thought I saw a familiar name on here the other day...... Hello Seth.

What's the latest truck in your shop for?

Twisted Minis 12-06-2008 03:15 AM

Re: Gary's S10

Some people like dragging their trucks. I tried it once, I didn't see the point. Some people do it a lot. I guess it's preference, and looking cool for other people? I'd rather not destroy something I put a lot of time and money into.

Hey! Lol. The other truck is here to get some previous work repaired. Its had what I think are 3 separate bag setups in the back, and the work is honestly scary, and unsafe. So I'm replacing all of this:

As usual, you don't mess around.....already got that crap outta there. You going to have a build thread on this one somewhere?

Twisted Minis 12-07-2008 02:37 AM

Re: Gary's S10

I don't think there is really a place for this type of truck here. I might put one up on OFN when I get more into the fab part.
