I can get 26 on the interstate, but 20 in the city is near impossible.

I would've thought that add was for a diesel though

Re: Special Economy Truck?

First of all, when has any vehicle gotten the EPA rated MPG? It's always been a farse. Notice there's a big fat 20 in the middle of the page, not the 28. I believe it would be the diesel and they just aren't saying it. People weren't accommodating of the diesel vehicles back then. GM was the only one even offering a diesel prior to '83 and always the one one offering them in light duty trucks and SUVs.
As far as someone getting 32 mpg from a 6.2 in anything goes...people lie. Or maybe it's kinder to say "exaggerate". It just plain ain't happenin'.

Red block 6.2 diesel. Completely gutless. But... 25mpg is doable on the highway with that engine. You need to keep close track of the RPMs and not lug it or over-rev...
I've gotten just over 22mpg with my 6.5L twice. My overall average is 19. My Mileage widget tells me I used 3394 gallons of fuel over the last 10 years and 65,440 miles.

Is that 32 litres per 100/k, because I just don't see how you are getting that in MPG.

I'm lucky to get 25 city/back roads LOL

and I HAD a welded rear so my city/back road MPG was worse before I put an open carrier back in it.

I guess it's the gearing. 700 junk R, NP208 junk that blows out of 2hi under hard breaking, and 3:08 ratios. I'm running stock suspension, stock tire size, every like 6-8 months I use fuel booster, I keep my side windows up as much as I can, and I downshift rather than give it more fuel.

My 87 R10 6.2/700R4/3.08's gets 23mpg average, mixed driving - 5 miles city, 14 miles highway, 16 miles country (a stop or turn every 3 miles or so), and 2 miles dirt.

It gets right around 28 at 56mph - just need to keep it in OD and the TCC locked up.

BTW that's at 216, 000 miles, and as far as I can tell it's hasn't been rebuilt.

Some incredible mileage stories with 6.2s. Makes me wonder how two identical engines/drivetrains/tires can get such different (like 10mpg) mileage. My '85 Jimmy w/6.2/700r4/NP208/3.08s/235/75-15s got 22. With diesel torque you can actually keep your mileage when increasing to larger tires and going to lower gears. It now has 12.50/35 tires and 4.10s and still gets 22 mpg. So did my '91 6.2 Suburban with the same axles and tires. That's hwy mileage.

It says it beats a competitors v8 by 47 horsepower. I don't think they could have been talking about a 6.2 diesel...

I'm not bashing them. I've driven 6.2 diesels over 200k miles and seen over 25 mpg a couple times. My 86 that I loved and drove the most would get 23 on the highway on a regular basis.

My best guess is the "special economy truck" was a 305/2.73 geared truck with the manual OD trans (Its still a 4 speed by the way, not a 5 speed. It's a Chrysler/New Process A833 http://www.hemmings.com/mus/stories/...feature17.html)

Are you talking instant average, or average per tank? Either way, you would have prove those claims for me to buy them.

Didn't GM offer a Lock up option in a TH350? Was thinking that they did in the mid 80's kinda odd... Seems I looked at a truck back 10-15 years ago that had a 6cyl / 350TH with a lock up and the guy said he got mid 20's just running around.

My 79 C-10 with a 5.3/60E/3.73 gear gets 20 on the highway. And I drive it like I am late all the time :) At least getting up to 70ish..

The 82 was buit for economy when fuel had spiked to $1.60/ gallon from $0.80 . It had smaller pre-chambers, diffrerent injectors, and a different curve on the DB2. The rear gears were setup to keep the engine in its' sweet spot if you were careful.

"beats it's closest sales competitor's high mileage V-8"

sounds like double talking jive to me...
I wonder which competitor's V-8 they are talking about...

Prolly the 302 Windsor in an F150. I had a W150 Dodge with a 318 and never got over 13 with it on the highway.

Sounds like the same kind of BS their trying to tell us now on the kind of mileage we can get out of a VOLT. Just make sure that you have a long extension cord that plugs into a Coal powered power plant.

Re: Special Economy Truck?

The 305s were,what,165HP? Was the competition's V8 really under 120? I built a Volkswagen engine with 1/2 again more hp than that!

Oh,I know all about the 6.2s from '82. I wasn't referring to your claim. It was the 32 MPG I don't believe. And,that's with an '87,not an '82. Mines an '85.

I know a guy with a Volt and it most certainly gets incredible fuel sipping mileage. I agree you have to figure what these cars do to your electricity usage. It's less at the ump and more elsewhere. Not as green as they seem. What about the batteries when they go bad and it costs more than the car is worth. From what I understand the Prius is a disposable car due to the cost of a new battery package. I also heard the pant where they are built is an environmental hazzard.

Basically a couple trips, mostly long-stretched back roads on Delaware Rt. 9 or going up to the Poconos... popping it down a gear for hills to maintain something between 75 and 80mph.

My regular driving, I get 25-27. This includes some city, mostly highway, and mainly 85-100 mph EVERY morning, manually shifting the trans for hills.

The thing is, even if it were true, no one would ever believe that. I dont care what method your using to conserve fuel. You got a gas motor and a 4x4 long bed. I got $100 that says you are doing your calculations wrong cause there is no way i will believe you get better then 20 Miles Per Gallon. Especially not at 80 with the ac on. More like 17 tops is what i would believe there.
