Hmm. We will have to see how it goes then. I am using 13" front rotors. Of course it will depend on where the rotors end up also. It will be a while before I get the brakes together to find out.

Just did a very quick and dirty mock up on the garage floor and I don't think my setup is going to have any clearance issues with the control arms. The rotors from the late model truck are not offset in as much as the older ones, they are closer to the wheel face. Will take more proper assembly to be sure though.

The 13" rotors absolutely require the 17" wheels though, I can see that much for sure.

Screaming good deal. Why so cheap?

This junkyard sells engines for 200 regardless of what it is with a 25 core charge. They had a 31% off sale today. Only problem is engines get snatched the second trucks are put out on the lot. It is a struggle to get one.

Did they have the motor separated from the 4l60e?

Someone had beaten me to the trans. I wasn't too upset over it since I plan to go with a 4l80e.

They sell transmissions for $80 with a 20 core. I'd love to snag a 4l80e from them.

Great looking truck! I like your plans for it. What's the latest update?

Re: 68 shortbed stepside stripper truck build

Sorry this thread has been going without updates.... been a long and busy winter at work. Things are still progressing slowly in the background though.

The truck itself is sitting pretty much untouched in the corner of the garage.

The parts list is slowly getting shorter... I have the 5.3, 4l80e, turbo, ProEFI, Vintage A/C, Boyds fuel tank, Eaton posi, wheels, big brakes, late model seats, non spare tire fender, & van steering column.

The big things I still need are radiator & fans, torque converter and flex plate, driveshaft, tires, gauges, and fuel pumps.

Re: 68 shortbed stepside stripper truck build

One thing I do have some mild concern about is how this old truck chassis will hold up to power. With the turbo 5.3 engine I am hoping to get it up to 700+ wheel horsepower on occasion (boost controller will keep power more reasonable for average street driving) and I feel like I will need to brace the frame for that.

Curt, sounds like the parts gathering is going well. Hopefully you will be able to jump into it soon.

Re: 68 shortbed stepside stripper truck build

Today I had a couple friends who are more knowledgeable with carbs come over and try to get the 250 running one last time. It just won't do it. We can't understand why but the thing just will not run.

That being said I guess it's getting towards time to stop messing around and pull the drivetrain. It would have been nice to be able to sell the engine as a runner.
