Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
I have done a little in the last few weeks, I got the new spindles on along with the redrilled rotors, got a bead ran on the frame horns and sat my caprice rear in place (still need to get the pinion angle set)....

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
so i have a question...why the capri rear end? isnt the bold pattern 5x4.5? is it strong enough?
|
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
It's a Chevrolet Caprice rear

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
yea was just abreviating it. I dont know much about swapping rear ends was just curious as to the reason for that rear end instead of a 12 bolt truck.
Any advatages or just easy for you to find? |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
No, it's not any easier to find and I have 2 truck 12 bolts. As far as advantages, the caprice rear has disc brakes and the 5x5 bolt pattern same as the trucks, plus it's a 8.5" 10 bolt so it plenty strong for now.

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
Did this 2 or 3 weeks ago, haven't really done much lately. Set the radiator support on, bolted the bumper on, put the grille in and the pass headlight bezel, and I set the bed on.

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
Dude sick truck! Im getting ready to take the frame of my 75 chevy long box and make it into a short box. How long did it take you to shorten the frame?

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
Thanks guys.
I started on a saturday and finished early sunday afternoon, probably could have had it done saturday but I ran out of daylight and I didn't have an electric grinder or a decent air compressor. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
hey back when you where cutting the frame to make it a short box what where the measurements of the notch piece after you measured the 8'' and the 14''? looks like it could be 4-6 inch's in the pics you have, have you done any more to the truck lately?
|
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
I don't remember how much it was, I may have it wrote down somewhere, i'll try and look tonight.
All I have done since I posted the last pics has been getting my other 2 tires mountes and modified another center cap. Don't have any pics yet. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
well its looking pretty epic so far man, you have put in alot of work in the truck from where it started from, but that is the name of the game right. i cant wait to cut the frame this week, how did the box holes line up after?
|
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
I have seen in a few other articles on frame shortening that says you have to cut 6" off the rear of the frame also. Did you do this too?
I am picking up a 78 cc this weekend that i am going to shorten. Thanks ahead of time for the info. |

I have read that as well, but my frame was already cut off at the rear due to the dump setup so i'll actually have to add a couple inches to mine. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
Ok. thanks
|
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
so is it forsure that 6 inch's has to come off the rear? how many bolts hold on a short box to a frame, hey rs72z would you happen to have a link to the article for shorting frames

The way it's done in this post is the best way i think to do the front. The other article says to remove the rear sill crossmember and cut 6" off and bolt the crossmember back in using factory holes. |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
ok sounds wicked, just a side note make sure when you cut the frame you wheel base is 117.5''(2985mm)
so i will wait to read your post before i start cut more on the frame |

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
Are you sure about the 8 bolts conundrum cuz I looked at a short box today and I only seen 4, 2 near the front of the box and 2 right at the end. I might be wrong but that all I seen on this truck, and the guy said it totally original.I have been wrong before. Lol

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
Mine takes 8

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
He's right on the 8 bolts, just looked at my 87 scsb. 2 at the front and 2 at the rear.

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
It's not much, but I did something.
Cut the 2 pieces off the frame for radiator/support clearance and seen I also have to clearance the radiator support to clear the steering box as well.... http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...025_174643.jpg http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...025_174703.jpg http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...025_180552.jpg http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...025_184350.jpg Luckily this radiator support isn't much good so it'll allow me to get the clearance I need and then I can figure out how to do my good one so it looks good. Also got some more pics of the truck.... http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...025_163406.jpg http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...025_163830.jpg I think it may be the angle, but I really like the second pic of the truck. :gmc2: |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
Nice dude! I'm digging those wheels!

Looking pimp bro. It sure is coming along.

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
Any thing new going on with your truck? Just pick up a box for mine and all the measurement turned out awesome, only 4 out of the 8 bed bolts lined up.no big deal to drill 4 new holes tho.

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
No not recently, haven't had much time.
Glad to hear yours is coming along. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
ya its coming slowly, haha, just need to find a motor and tranny for it, thinking of a 350 for now with a turbo 400 behind it, what are you running in your c10? would you know how low i can go with my c10? i was hoping for a 5/7 drop but i heard that the lower control arms would rub on a stock 15" rim. its not a daily driver so i want it as low as possible.
|
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
I currently have a Pontiac 400, i'd like to find a 455, it currently has a turbo 350 bolted toit but if I run an auto i'll probably use the 2004R I have. I'd really like to run a manual trans, maybe a 6spd but that'll have to wait.
As far as how low you can go all depends on how low you want to go and the amount of work you're willing to do. So far the math on the amount of drop in the front of mine is 8". As far as a stock wheel rubbing will depend on backspacing with a 2.5" drop spindle, mine just barely touched in a couple places with a 15x8 rally so it wouldn't take much to get the needed clearance. If you use a 3" spindle, your backspacing is more important. Posted via Mobile Device |

Thanks guys. I'm hoping to have another update soon, although it may only be a small one. With it getting colder outside, I have been spending a lot of time thinking about what I want to do to it. So far I have decided to do a manual trans, 4, 5 or 6spd all depends on what I get my hands on. Although if I do a 6spd i'll need to ditch the 3.08s that are in that rearend for sure. And i'm considering swapping out the leaf springs for some truck arms, if I go with the arms I can get all that stuff for free from my dad. |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
I got a little done over the weekend, I trimmed the radiator support to fit around the steering box, put the drivers fender on, set the hood on and put my grille and headlight bezels back on. Pulled my bed off and removed the bumpstops, then put the bed back on. I'll post some pics in the next day or 2.

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
I'm a little behind on my update LOL
Here are some pics from yesterday..... http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...211_133811.jpg http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...211_133916.jpg And this one shows the bumper I picked up the previous weekend for $10, it had never been mounted but it is a foreign repop so it's got some rust on the top side that's pretty rough. But I have plans for it  then it'll get powder coated either black, silver or white, I haven't decided just yet..... http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...211_144150.jpg But this may be the last update til spring, with no heat in the garage it's a little hard to work on the truck. |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
nice :metal:

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
Thanks
I just found your build. |
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC

|
Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC

Re: "Sin-thia" My 74 GMC
