Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
If you would like to get an idea on a modded core support, check out Ryanroo's build thread. He just modified his chevy support for a dodge rad and intercooler. Maybe it'll help you out on where to start.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Here's what I have so far. I'm picking up more sheet metal tommorrow. I used 1"x3" 1/8" thick steel tubing to frame out the cooler and radiator. I still have to cut out the front part of the core support so the opening matches the radiator.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
It uses the same mounts as the 2003.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Christmas came early. My truck came with a Toolbox on the passenger side of the bed. My door was rusted out, but everything else was good. The doors are very expensive, if you can find a good one. I was going to fill in the bedside and not have the toolbox anymore but I couldn't do it. It's too cool to cover up. So I bit the bullet and bought one. Luckily I sold one of my frames to cover the cost.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Here's a pic of my first build. A 1969 Chevelle from California (no rust). I got it when I was in the Army, stationed in Ft. Irwin. I built it When I had nothing better to do with my money. It's got a 435 HP 350 sb. Eventually I'll put an LS motor in it. All hotchkis suspension, and it's blacked out.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Gonna be a cool truck! I'm watching this for sure

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Rite on with the build

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
SCRIBED! Schweet build so far man!

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Okay I have finished the core support. All I have to do is mount it to the frame. I already know how I am going to do it. I still need to put the Headlight buckets on the core support. Here are the pics.
The first one is the top mount for the radiator. It uses the factory bushing from the 2003 truck. http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...psba80a5e9.jpg http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps968b86b2.jpg |
Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Sorry for the blurry pics.
Next is the core support in the truck. http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1a3aa7c0.jpg http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4ef1b3c1.jpg |

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Now I have to align all my front sheet metal so I can mount the core support to the frame.
I will post a picture of the dash I had my Uncle machine out Later. It was made to look like the original dash panel but we are going to cut out the center to match the newer 2003 gauges. I'll post that pic tomorrow. |
Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
looking good!

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Looks good.
There is a local '71 truck with the Duamax long frame conversion also. He took two cabs and made a '71 extended cab |
Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Nice work on your support, and that is one awesome 69 Chevelle Dude! Congrats!

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
GSP7 is the 71 truck on this site? I would like to see a pic of it. I thought about doing an extended cab, but decided against it.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Okay here is what I'm doing with the dash. I want to use the 2003 gauge cluster. I had to add 2 inches to the top of the dash opening to fit the cluster.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Once again sorry for the blurry pics. Here is a pic of the other side of the dash.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
I still need to do some finish work on the metal.
My Uncle is a machinist so he made me a dash panel that resembles the 1972 panel, but it's 2 inches taller to fit the 2003 gauge cluster. Our plan is to remove the inner part of his panel, and make a plate that will bolt to his panel. We have not done that yet. I plan on finding some wood grain decals to put on it so it matches the glove box door. The truck will get all the Sierra Grande trim on it. Here is the panel. http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2b660547.jpg http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...psd75792e4.jpg http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps25ac12c7.jpg http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2e771ebf.jpg |
Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
The steering column is in about the same location as the original column. I will need to change the Chevy horn button to a GMC one.
|
Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
I'm going to have to take a break from working on the truck for a week or two so I can get my CJ5 ready to plow for the winter.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
The 68 shortbed Chevy is my brothers. It's got one of the nicest cabs on it that I have ever seen. The doors aren't that great but the side glass has a nude chick engraved on it with a playboy bunny logo on it.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
the custom panel looks great, and will look even better with the Sierra Grande package. What are you going to do about the dash pad?
|
Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
lookin good,,,i have a feeling this is what i will be doing when i build my shortbed next

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
I might round off the right side of the dash so it blends in with the passenger side. I am going to make a piece of 16 ga. that will go over the dash and follow the contours of it. I will weld on studs to it so I can bolt it to the dash. Once I make that, I'll either use carpet padding for my pad and wrap it in leather, or I will let a pro do it.
I might come up with something else later, we will see. That part is a ways away. Posted via Mobile Device |

yea, i know. I was just curious

Nice work. Your brother's window sounds interesting.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
I put the Chevelle in storage. Now I have a lot more room to work. Here is a side view of the truck. I plan on putting a step bar on the truck to cover up the frame a little.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
I got my core support mounted. I made some brackets and I used the original 1972 core support mounts and polyurethane bushings.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Looking sweet.
I was wondering if you're planing on running the IFS up front or swapping it out for a solid axle. I'm doing a similar swap but in the burb flavor. 72' on a 2000 chassis. I'm debating whether to keep the IFS or swap in a 79' Ford HP60 that I already have sitting around. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t...n77/Burb/1.jpg |
Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
Thanks. I think if I lifted my truck, I would swap in a solid axle. Not sure yet. Those wheels on the Burb are awesome.

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
I'm back to work on the 72. I put in new lights in the garage, since it gets dark so early.
I started mounting the bed. I removed the cross members from the bottom of the bed floor. Since I was going to have to notch the cross members I wanted to use a thicker beam. I used 2"X2" 1/4" square tube. Probably a little overkill. I had to figure out if I wanted to weld the beams to the frame and bolt the bed floor to the beams, or weld the beams to the floor and bolt it to the frame. I decided that since I was notching the beams, they would be stronger if I welded the beams to the frame. I was worried about the frame being too rigid if I did this. When I laid out the beams on the frame, there was a frame cross member there anyway, so I figured it was okay. I still have one more beam to make but I had to put the bed on to measure for it. http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7f601554.jpg |
Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis

Re: 1972 GMC Using 2003 Chevy 2500HD duramax Chassis
I still have to find places for the computers, and batteries under the hood. I have to fix the passenger side cab corner that I let a "Professional" due. I did the driver side cab corner and the rocker panel, and my door gaps are great. I let a "pro" due the other side, and I have to redo it. I gave them the cab, doors, and new hinges, and I still need to do it over.:waah:
On a better note. I found a paint guy. I can't afford him, but he still came over to the house, even after I told him I couldn't do it. He said he wanted to see the truck. I told him I would probably try to paint it myself, and he said he would help me out with pointers. He was at the house for three hours. He was really helpful and super cool. He is currently painting a car for the Detroit auto show, so you he knows what he is doing. |
