Well Wife is almost 100% recovered now and I have been able to sneak out to the gargae late at night and start working on the burb again. Got a few pics to post the american autowire kit is almost 100% complete on the interior now. Just waiting on my friend to send me the extra blower resistor he has laying around in his gargae and that will be finished. I also got the gauge cluster wired up and found some cardboard tube to replace the missing light tubes in the cluster. I found the little buggers in a martha stewart crafty thingy at michaels craft store. I brought em home handed the wife the crafty stuff and ran off with the tubes to my basement electrical bench lol. A few cuts later and they are done! Also currently working on a 1990 camaro tilt column install found an ole boy on craigslist 2 columns for 30 bucks so having fun with it. Started rehabbing the 283 engine new headgaskets in place heads bolted back on but not torqued down just yet till I decide to keep the original heads or possibly got with a set of vortecs not sure yet looking at both options right now. The 283 is a standard bore engine not been touched at all the bores are all 300 thousandths over atm so just gonna run it as is for now :D . Next up mid february will bbe going to portland to grab a nv4500 from lkq auto parts if they still have it and get it and the engine bolted up together and in the truck.

Glad to hear your wife is doing well :)

The Vortec heads would do good to wake the 283 up a little. It just depends on how much $$ you want to put into the little small block. You'll also need a Vortec intake to go along with the heads.

Hey Capn,
Yeah looking at that at this time. Will make a decision by march. 1st things first get my hands on the nv4500 they are getting harder to find used in the yards.

well been working on the steering column so more. Since i plan on using the AAW ignition switch I took all that kjunk off the factory column and I am using the key and a steering wheel lock mechanism only at this time. I am working on the firewall seal right now using an old 73-87 truck rubber seal and playing with it to see ifn I can make it work on the external firewall hole. the turn signal lever is doen with a few pieces of scrap from huney do projects. Since I was not able to reuse the bright light awitch and wiper switch assembly on the column. Pretty happy with thing to date. Next up withh be doing a similar mod like I did to my ididit column to hel keep it from rotating in the bracket inside the truck.
Thinking about the vortec head idea great idea but gonna rebuild the 283 heads with new hardened valve seats and save some money on manifold and whatever else needed for a vortec swap.
Heading down to all american classics in vancouver wa 1st of march when I go to pick up the nv4500 2wd transmission from lkq and check out that junkyard and see what all he has laying around :D.

Re: Got a new toy coming home next week guys :D

yep love building oddball stuff dat way never know what ya need till its starin ya in da face :D . on another noted looking at a couple of trans options. NV4500 for one expensive requires adapter bell for mechanical clutch, Tremec 3650 great overdrive but pricey adapter, and the chevy my6 tranny little known and long forgotten basically mopar tranny to chevy bellhosuing oddball but worked dammed good. I actually had one in a 84 k10 truck but traded it to my brother so the bastard is long gone grrrr.. finding these on car parts aint that bad just gotta run by n check em out main things is the danged shifter assembly is a bugger to find replacements for so that is main goal find one with bell and shifter if possible. also cast iron case is the better trans since the aluminum ones require machining for a countershaft bushing due to wear.

The rubber column shift seal from the 73 truck worked good just squirted weatherstrip adhesive around the outside edges and used a blowdryer to heat it up to seal on the outside of the firewall of the truck, then poured some h20 over it and no leaks so far, real test will be cruising 60-70 down a rainy highway lol.

Why not go with the NV4500 and use the original hydro bellhousing? I can set you up with the hydro clutch master cylinder conversion.

Some say that there could be clearance issues between the slave and front driveshaft, but I don't think it will be a problem. You might find a little helpful info in this thread.

http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=558135

Then you just need a round pattern NP205

Re: Got a new toy coming home next week guys :D

Hey Capt,
I liek that one will have to watch it and see how it develops. I found a my6 chevy od unit in montana 126k original miles plus a 50k 1 year warranty for 450 to my door. There is one nv4500 I am keeping an eye in portland as well. I am doing the divorced t case setup on the burb. Found a couple of good np205 d tcases up here for pretty cheap.
When ya get time throw some pics together of your idea for a hydraulic clutch assembly you have my interest there?

Well have finally settled on a transmission setup. I found a complete my6 with shifter in oregon for 400 with bell housing setup I am putting on layaway tommorrow and will pick up in 4 weeks time. While out there gonna run by all american classic parts yard and see what all goodies they have laying around out there. Once that is home gonna set it on garage floor and start working the 283 over next still in decision curve regarding some vortec 305 heads or the original 283 power packs heads right now will get it figured out after transmission is home :D

Hey Captn Any good yards out your way with some olderr 60-66 gmcs laying around you aware off I am wanting a gmc grill for this suburban since I am a fan of the dual headlights look :D.

There's not much left around here in the wrecking yards. Most of them have been crushed. Usually Pull and Save in Spokane has some of the '60-'66's but they haven't had any for a while.

Well as usual murphy poked his nose into my business grandmother passed away late january and on way home from cali my red gmc bit the bucket so it looks like now the suburban will be my primary driver here very soon. Scrapped the manual trans idea for now and going to do a nice little 700r4 so I don't have to break and clutch on the pedals all the time with grades the parking garages have around here ahhh well. But have made some porgress as yall will see. engine is almost fully ready to go just lacking a few brackets and pulley which i should soon have. Power brake booster is installed, gas tank and some odd ball parts are ordered an on the way. Here are some pipcs of the engine as it sits right now!
The first picture is of the 283 have some hipo 305 heads on he I got from a new facebook group i am a member of here in seattle :D saved me 300$ at a machine shop redoing the 283 heads not that i am geting rid of them gonna hang on to em incase I need em in future. Second pic is the 88 chevy truck booster I picked up today! Thrid are the new NOS corvair latches I got from clarks corvairs they are identical to the suburban ones
Still got a ways to go but soome will have her up n cruiing the seattle area.

I am not sure if it still there but last week I pulled some parts from a Chevy truck that just arrived at Budget Auto Wrecking in Auburn. It had a GMC grill on it with the 4 headlights in excellent shape.

Hey Guys haven't posted much lately what with work getting fired all that good stuff but have made some progress on the truck and will throw some photos up :D the barn doors are finished and working not quite aligned but closing latching and sealing properly. Wiring nearly 100% other than a few electricamel switchies. Enigne trans in working on accessories atm on that one :D Holley 2 brl 500cfm perched on top :D Did some playing with both the late model booster and the 78 booster the push rod assemblies are identical expect for how they mount to the pedal so I used a donor 78 booster pushrod assembly mated into the 88 booster and works perfectly!!! On the barn doors I need to get the aligned and mounting flush mainly the back passenger and makes some spacer bars for the latch strikers.

Hey got a question how did you hook up the rod to the pedal from that 88 booster? I got one today and I got captainfabs bracket but not sure how I want to connect to the booster rod got any pics by chance?

Re: Got a new toy coming home next week guys :D

Hey Trav,
I had a junk 78 booster in my garage that I took parts out of. On the 88 booster it did not have the adjust push rod like the older one so I took the old one and new ones apart and used the adjustable pushrod from the 78 in the 88 model booster. the assemblies are the same inside the boosters so they swap out. Now I can attach it to my pedal without having to fab up anything :D

Hey Guys,
Long time but things are looking up working through a couple of nursing agencies and starting a full time job in Olympia come June hallelujah!!!! Been working on little projects eg Wiring, front nose reassembly ( pissing me off there), fuel lines and tank (another irritation which will post soon!). And once job comes around and I get moving on it gonna be dropping the 700r4 out come to find out it is shot completely there was a puddle of trans fluid on the shop floor from the torque converter after I topped it up and the case apparently has a crack in it near the pump as well /sigh. thinking the manual gonna be better way to go even if one needs built still easier for me then autos :D. Will post some pics of the tank issue here pretty quickly.

Ok guys here are the gas tank issues I talked about the gas tanks are identical except for the angles of the filler necks. I can't return the tank I have so am working on creating a piece to mimic the bend in the American classic tank setup. The American classic 60-66 tank is identical to the tank I have from lmc BUT the 67-72 gas tank for the suburbans and blazers has a different filler neck attached which will work better in a suburban. Only thing I really have to do after getting the right pipe is rewire the fuel gauge for the 90 ohm sender in the tank nothing to that. Main thing is finding a 45 degree bend piece of 1 3/8" OD pipe to get it over the frame lip. HEre are some pics to look at. I tried installing it as is but the fuel hose to connect to the filler neck crimps to much and would make it slow to fill. The lmc tank is great if you are doing through the bed floor setups but not so hot for the suburbans like I have lol. I may have found a supplier for the metal tubing I need but have to call them Monday ( they are in California (spd exhaust) also there is a cnc tubing place in Marysville about an hour from me I cam going to call as well and see what they can do for me as well.

Re: Got a new toy coming home next week guys :D

I used that tank, we just welded up the filler neck and moved it to the top of the tank. Things were so close we welded in a filler neck from a 91 suburban , added a door to the floor of the 66 and it is still in use as we speak. Kieth

here is a link, click on the other pictures (thumbnails) and they will show you how we modified the tank to make it work.

here is a link to the finished fillerneck door:

:gmc2:

ps If you will roam around my smugmug build page you will see how we secured the fuel tank, and how we modified the straps to make for a clean installation. Kieth
