Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
hey I like your work. what weld process did you go with and if it was mig did you run them in short curcuit with a 75/25 argon/co2 mix or 100% co2. or what if different? Im about ready to start my chassis and im looking for all the info I can get. Thank you

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
chevytroy,
All of the welding on the frame is mig with a 75/25 gas mix. We started with a smaller Hobart Handler (110) and upgraded to a larger Miller (220) after we exceeded the duty cycle on the smaller machine all to often. Boxing the frame will test a mig machine. The stainless items and exhaust from the flange were tig welded with a large miller machine. Thanks for the post! Fab1 |

Hey everyone,
Fab 1 and I got a little more compleated on the exhaust tips today. Let us know what you think about this design. Fab 1 is also going to make a small stainless visor that will mount to the running board around the tips to complete the look. Renegade |

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
Hey everyone,
Fab1 and I got a little done today. Fab1 made a heat shield for one of the mufflers out of 1/8th aluminum. We welded flange nuts to the muffler as spacers and for mounting the heat shield. Now we have the shields for the other muffler and both tips to make. I will post more pics as we get more done. Renegade |

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
Looks great. Verry unique. I like the contrast of the sheet shield next to the SS muffler.
Keep it up. Marc |
Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
looking awesome, is that Hugh Jackman building them side pipes??

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
Nice heat shields for the mufflers....Jim

Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
Thanks for the comments!
We wanted to do something a little different from the norm. The Hugh Jackman wanna be in the photos is the notorious Fab1. Thanks, Renegade |
Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
Lord knows I've been called many things but Hugh Jackman, that's a first. Lol! This is what I look like on an off day caught by surprise. I had caught the shop on fire three times the day before, once including some frayed denim I was wearing and a frame covering. I just wanted to make it out alive. Don't know if Renegade ever did answer the question I was asking. Thanks for all the positive comments guys. When all of the ceramic coating is completed these heat sheilds will actually have even greater contrast than what's shown. Probably didn't need them but we know we DONT need any high heat surprises to finished paint. Thanks again!

Fab1 and I started on the Nitrous Express fogger install yesterday. Will post pics later this weekend.

We had a good day today on the nitrous install. Fab 1 did a great job forming and plumbing all the nitrous lines and installing the nozzles. This is the BP stage(Before Polish).
We still have to plumb the fuel lines on the othe side, plumb the purge lines and remount the intake on the motor. We are also changing the air breather over to a shotgun setup so it will show off the nitrous plumbing. Let us know what you think. I also want to thank Fab1 for all his dedication and hard work on this build. It has been one of the best times I have had building a hot rod with a good neighbor and a great friend. Thanks Fab1!!! Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
Good morning! I'm with Daze57, I hope you like talking about this truck because you'll have many a fuel-up conversation. Probably be localized to one of the two or three stations we have local with high octane. I've had a blast helping you on your project Renegade and Lord knows you've helped me out time and again.
My comment when Renegade informed me of his NOS decision: "Because 600 HP just isn't enough?" LOL! Love that guy. |

Here are some more pics of the nitrous set up. We still have to dismantle and polish. Fab1 polished a couple of the lines and there is a big difference.
Also, I have posted a couple of pics of the exhaust tip heat shields. I will post pics later this weekend if I get time,(got to work on taxes) to reinstall the carbs and put on the shotgun scoop. We still have to fab and install all the fuel lines, vacuum lines, etc. Buy carb linkage and a few other odds and ends to finish the engine. All lines on the engine will be hard line except for the heater hoses and radiator hoses. Please let us know what you think. Thanks, Renegade |

Got a little done today. Mounted the plenum and carbs back on the intake. Also mounted the shotgun scoop.
I really like this look! Renegade |
Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
That looks killer.
I'm confused thought, is this the same truck as before, or a second one? |
Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
Thanks for the comment.
This is the same truck. Renegade |

Here are a few more pics of Fab1's handywork. He bent and installed fuel supply lines out of 3/8 aluminum to the new regulators for the carbs and the foggers. Also started bending the fuel lines to the solenoids on both sides of the engine until we ran out of fittings. Then we installed the carb linkage rods we made.
Also we modified the shotgun scoop on the underside to let it come forward about a 1/2 inch for firewall clearance and also set the butterflies in the scoop to see what they looked like. Now I need to decide what color I am going to paint the butterflies, may go with black chrome. Renegade |
Re: 50 Chevy Trck Chassis
I hafta say, I like the scoop look much better. After talking to one of my friends here on the job about Renegade's set up, he suggested going with a stouter motor mount or even a plate mount. Renegade isn't planning on racing the truck but will want to be able to get on it without things flying out of place. Do you guys think a ridgid mount or even a plate is warranted for this driver? Thanks for any help,
Fab1 |
