Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

I will have more pictures tomorrow. Went over to work on it tonight and got a lot done. Bed is off, mocked up some of the airbag stuff before to see how it will fit with the bed on. Front clip is off as well. Was pleasantly surprised to find NO rust on the front of the cab. Very excited about that. Got the core support off and radiator/tranny cooler drained. Going to take the engine out probably tomorrow night and will take some pictures. Decided I'll be taking the cab off too to make it a frame-off. What the heck at this point
It will make it easier to finish up the cab mounts and paint the underside nicely. Going to paint everything off of the truck for better results. Can't wait to get started on the suspension!

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Here are the pictures. These I took when I got there tonight. Three hours later it looked almost the same minus the steering column, wiring, e-brake, etc. So after the engine and tranny are pulled, it's 4 bolts for the cab and it's off.

Wow, sorry they're so fuzzy. they looked fine on the camera

As you can see the exhaust is already close to the trailing arms and runs under the crossmember so we'll be running it through the crossmember. Going with all new exhaust as well.

Here's a few pictures of the rust areas needing attention still and some we've started to fix as well as the nice heated springs I'll be swapping out for bags. Let this be a warning to those considering heating springs...notice they are actually sitting on each other at the bottom.

Passenger rear floor

Patch for passenger rear floor
http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2009006.jpg
Driver's rear floor. I will have a box behind the seat so we cut out the rust and put this panel in running it all the way to the cab corner eliminating the factory "hole" there.

New carrier bearing (will probably be flipping before I put the bed back on)

Heated springs

Andy....he made me want to quit the build

:lol::lol:just kidding of course. Went to drop off a part for another boardmember and ended up having a 3-hr mini-board meet :lol::lol:

You came on board at the right time as I finally am doing some real work on it. The last year has been buying parts and changing my mind :sumo:

Thank Skorp for that. It's a photo I pulled from another member (sorry, saved it a year or so ago and forgot who it is) and had trim/rally rims, vent windows, etc and Skorp P-shopped it for me. I can visualize the truck but it never hurts to have a hard copy to drool over and show others

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Well, got the engine and tranny pulled last night. Found out the PO had NO bolts holding the motor mounts to the front crossmember. In fact, the passenger mount fell off of the rubber mount on the engine as soon as we pulled the block. Meaning no bolts from the mount to the block OR crossmember. Also the tranny mount only had one bolt in it and it was loose. Also the rear U-joint fell apart when we pulled the driveshaft and it had NO grease in it. And the tranny was just installed last year...think he should have re-used the mount???

http://i562.photobucket.com/albums/s...8th2009026.jpg

I'm glad I'm doing a frame off to correct these issues. I will know everything about the truck and know it will be solid and safe as well as hopefully a sweet looking ride :metal:

Here's the rest of the pics from the evening

engine will at minimum be cleaned, painted body color, and dressed up with a BUNCH of chrome goodies. May do some more power upgrades as well depending on timing/budget

It's funny that I thought you sold this. It's coming along very nicely.

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Nice...progress!!!.....That mount looks terrible!!!

JMHO....with the engine, if you aren't going to do anything to it, I would suggest at least replacing all the gaskets you can....I didn't do anything to my motor, but spruce it up with paint and bling, but never did the gaskets....DUMB I know....I can't tell but I think the oil pan gasket or the front seal is leaking!!!...YUCK.....

VA72C10 07-31-2009 11:35 AM

Re: 1970 VA Longbed Project

Well, I might wish I sold it when I add up the receipts

The good news is the motor is a fresh rebuild with less than 2500 miles on it. No leaks I ever saw or see now. The tranny pan leaks but I'm putting some bling there and the oil pan so it should be good to go.

Looking good. Your going to have a brand new 70. How cool is that.
If that's a kitchen in the shop, you have it made. Why would you ever leave.
