Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Jon

Here is my vin # 4C144 H 103757

Can you help me break this down? I understand it's a 64 short wheelbase. But that's about it. Can you tell where it was made what motor and trans and rear end gear ratio?

Thanks!
Tony from Norcal

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

tony I was not able to get the vin decoder link to work, but my 64 owners manual helped:
4= 1964
c= conventional cab
14= 1/2 ton
4=cab & pickup box
H=fremont (calif assembly plant)
103757= #3757 produced that year

there is no way to tell the motor and trans and rear end data off the vin tag.
the rear axle tube pass side near the diff should have a code stamped in it, however I don't have a break down of the codes...
the owners manual shows a standard rear ratio of 3.73 for all c 10's, with 4.11, and 3.07's being optional

you have a low hump cab, so there were 3 trans available in low hump.. powerglide
a chevrolet 3 speed- r=3.14, 1=2.94,2=1.683=1
or a (borg) warner 3 speed -r=3.76,1=3.17,2=1.75,3=1

engines available for the ck 10,20,30 were:230 (6), 292 (6), and 283(8)

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

those numbers are part #'s for the frame rails...
check on the top of the frame rail just in front of where the LH motor mount bolts on., or under the cab, also on the top of the lh rail.

I have a question, on the American Chevy 64-66 trucks were the vin plates riveted with rosette rivets? One pic above shows the rosettes, but Tony's pics almost look as if they are spot welded. And to complicate matters further, the ones I have found online look completely different. http://trimtags.com/Images/rivets.jpg

I have seen both , the ones you have a pic of are for the data tag on the kick panel.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Is there anything in ithe VIN that codes the color and trim on the trucks (60-62 in my case) So if there was a color change or two tone paint or trim options how could you find out?

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

the only way to tell is the data tag on the kick panel... sometimes they are not stamped with the trim code though...
vin will only tell you year, plant, and in the case of the gmc wether it had an inline or v 6

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Thanks, I haven't gone that far yet but I'll look at it this weekend. Should tell me more about the truck. Is there a code sheet that I can use to decipher the code.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Is there any way to tell the production date(month/day). I got the orig sales receipt for my truck and I'm pretty sure he special ordered the truck. He picked it up on 5-6-61 and the S/N sequence is 3489 and was built in Oakland. The vin decoder says that it was build in 61 but I'm guessing that just could be the model year. I don't know what the delivery time was for special order trucks then. Just trying to get more history on this truck. Seems it could have been built very close to my birthday so I'm curous to see if I can track it down.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

i had wondered the same thing as I had no history on my truck, but what I did find when cleaning my gauges, is there is a date on the back of the panel itself( stamped with black ink, prod date for the gauge assembly ) usually 3 to 6 months prior to truck assembly, mine was dated april of 1964...maybe there will give you a clue.

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

[QUOTE=jonzcustomshop;3000012]On all 7 years you can also find the vin number on the left hand frame rail in front of the A arm.
There is also one stamped on the top of the LH frame rail under the cab,
these shots are from my 65 1/2 ton long box.
Notice how they only stamp the year, assembly plant, and the sequential serial # on the frame rail

How they stamp vin on -65 GMC frame rail. There s no assembly plant...
Is there only year and sequential serial # on the frame rail? Any example pics?

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

the first shot is a part# for the frame rail, but the second , on top by the steering, should match your vin, if they are like chevy, that same # should be stamped on top of the lh frame rail about 4 inches from the rear cab mount too...

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

JON, the gmc's do not have vin # on them from what everyone is saying, my truck is all original and the vin does not show up on the frame ?? I just updated the previous posting and I highlighted the numbers in silver on the black frame so everyone could see where they are located. Hope this helped. Kieth

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

is that a partial of your vin? my 65 chev has the # on the frame, but not the whole # from the door tag, justthe y3ar digit(5) and plant letter (*) and the last digits of the serial #

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Do all 60-66 4x4's have the vin in the same place as the 2wd? I have a 4x4 frame and a 64 2wd truck and both of them have a letter and vin but no years. I want to know what year the 4x4 is the cab has been swapped in the past. The 64 2wd is correct numbers matching cab and frame. Any other way to figure out what year the 4x4 frame is?

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

It states a 64-66 vin tag is mounted above the door inside the jamb. My '64 has the vin plate mounted on the A pillar. Why is this?

jonzcustomshop 07-13-2011 12:00 AM

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

65 and 66 above the door , 64 should be on the roof pillar, I think the "b" it would be.. above the gas cap...
