Drove it again a lil today..

Still have trouble with the brakes, new hydrailic everything soft lines hard lines cyclinders master cylinder etc.

Fluid not comming all the way back to MC its ok if you dont hit the brakes :)

Re: Grams '53 (1953 Chevrolet Belair)

Well, still have fits time to time fuel related...

We were on the way to a cruise in a few months ago, ran out of gas on way to the station in 90* temps, put 5 gallons in still nothing. well towed it back home with what dad was calling the 'beast/champ etc' :) :)

Parked it.

Turned out he had the fuel pump on backwards?! I dunno got a different pump and put it on like the book said to, it ran so drove it to pick up lil sis in the dark with 1 brakelight and 1 turn signal..

(I live in the sticks it ok). Well, gonna try to get the brakes resolved. And it all legal for the street I wanna take it to some cruises.

New hardlines/soft lines rebuild/honed MC New shoes and 4 whatcha call ems it slipped my mind, break calipers but for drums lol

Longer you drive it the more the brakes get locked up eventually you will be stuck, seems like the less you hit them the more you can drive before it locks up.

The kickboard to pedel is correct @ 7/16 or whatever it was.

Im stumped....thats a big problem...I wanna really get this thing fixed bad!

Dude, nice car man !!! Love the story behind it !!

Now, are you sure you have clearance between the pushrod and piston with the pedal released ?

"Now, are you sure you have clearance between the pushrod and piston with the pedal released ? "

I dunno about that exactly..

But I have the shop manual for this car it says 7/16 between top of the brake pedel and the toeboard (excentric bolt to adjust it, also huge pita).

Im still leanring about this stuff too so it probably could be another brake related problem..

thanks guys and thanks for the compliment chiefrocka

Still havent got the brakes resolved. A friend with a lift that knows a little more than myself mentioned bringing it up on the mtn to his shop to look at it. Dads gone to get some gas for it im going to call him up and hopefully drive it carefully up there (brakes work great, but you hit em a few times and they are locked).

So wish me luck!

Neat project for sure. My only car from 2000-2003 was a 54 Chevy. I drove it everyday, everywhere.

Re: Grams '53 (1953 Chevrolet Belair)

My experience won't help you really. I converted mine to disc brakes and later model master cylinder.

oldblue1968chevy 06-27-2011 10:26 PM

Re: Grams '53 (1953 Chevrolet Belair)

Ok thanks anyway

just for the heck of it, what did you use to convert it to disc?

Re: Grams '53 (1953 Chevrolet Belair)

Fatman's Mustang II with 5 lug disc rotors in GM bolt pattern. ECI dual master cylinder bracket with 70 Mustang master cylinder, Nova rearend with factory Nova rear drum brakes. Speedway motors residual valves in front and rear circuits.

Re: Grams '53 (1953 Chevrolet Belair)

No not really. Next big job is fixing the oil leak. It leaks oil like crazy. Need to get it out and scrape/pressure wash the grease off so we can see where its comming from and fix it.

To fix:
oil leak
gas guage (new sender unit)
brake lights
dash bulbs
scrape/pressure wash gunk
fix the heater (heater core bypassed, was leaking on floor)
finish polsihing the factory paint (roof is done)
get windshield wipers working (cables under dash)

Thats about it
