Ok, y'all inspired me.

I'm going to test the compression to make sure that's still good. Anything else I should check before I'm up to my elbows in education?

I just bought David Vizard CBB engine book from Amazon about rebuilding.

Thx all for the encouragement and perspective!

That's the best BBC book! Sorry, when ranting before, I failed to realize that you were wrenching on a BBC. All pretty much the same!

AND, to perhaps inspire some confidence, I did a cam swap tonight on my 383 SBC! so, timing set off and back on, pulled the intake, swapped camshaft and lifters. It's on its way back together! I left the rear two oil pan bolts in, but loose. Removed the rest. Only two required a wobble socket extension to get around crossmember. The pan dropped JUST enough that I could pull the timing cover off. I haven't removed headers, engine mounts, or even front accessories, aside from the serpentine belt, water pump, crank pulley and harmonic balancer. I've been at it for about 3 hours, and will have it all buttoned up, ready to fire in about two more hours. It's REALLY not a difficult job! And, even if you had more issues that surface after the swap, your only out an evening and some cheap parts.

I've done the same to the 434" BBC in my '68 GMC. No issues.

Good luck! Post pictures!

Nik

As a previous person, I tool did not see that you are working on a big block. Basically I was just saying that if you are nervous about doing any kind of work on this motor that this is normal, but that does not mean you cannot learn how to do this work, heck we all had to learn one way or another. Getting this book and reading it (not just looking at the pics... lol) will help give you some insight into how is all works, no matter if you are doing a cam swap, timing chain replacement, carb swap or complete engine overhaul. Educate yourself, it will make you feel better about it and inspire confidence in yourself. if you have questions, post them on here. I have ask many a question on this site and damn there are alot of great people on here that will help you. I have faith in you and your daughter!!

I had about a month of travels and then got bit by the COVID bug, so there's been a bit of a delay.

I'll get to going through the book and then find an engine hoist/mount and tear it down.

Thx for the follow up

Ok, so she's off to college and we're needing to try and cash out the truck, which is still rough. Where's the best place to try and recoup the $4k I'm into this little gem?

It's a sad day here for sure and I don't have the time or $$ to keep pushing forward. 😢

Then post an add to sell here on the Forum.
