Re: 67 C20 LB Conversion to C10 SB Fleet.

So I went to a local car show yesterday and dreamed of the day when I would be sitting in the lawn chair by my truck like all the others that were there with their rides. It gave me some good inspiration for my truck though. I have been kicking around the idea of smoothing out everything on my truck. I mean its not like its all original. I'm also not talking about going crazy with anything just mostly the door jambs and under the hood. I think I am also going to fill in some welds on the fish plates that I put on the frame. Make it look smooth.

So I guess I was thinking about using the non-lead lead-filler. does that sound right? anyone have any thoughts on that?

I was also thinking of shaving the drip rail around the window.
But I want a stock appearance with slight custom feal.
What do you guys think?

Anyway just thinking.

Don't have any pics this time but I did get my under hood wiring harness out and labeled so I'm not scratching my head when I re-install it at a later date.

So that means that i am close to getting the motor out and in the other frame.........Maybe!

Re: 67 C20 LB Conversion to C10 SB Fleet.

the best thing with the drip rails are to make the factory seams all welded nice and clean and smooth and keep them (by the way thats my 2 cents),
(it probably doesnt do this but) when you get rid of the drip rails it seems like it alot harder on the window rubber to do its job of not letting water in.

Got more done than I thought I would

So this morning I woke up a little after 7 to catch the cool morning air and do a little work. Started by putting my front end together. Mostly its there, I still need to do the steering and sway bar from the other chassis. After that I decided to unhook my motor and take it out of the long bed chassis. Everything went pretty well until I noticed i hadn't taken off the tin cover on the bell housing of the trans so that was hanging up. After I got that off it was cake. I then had to get it on the other chassis. The problem with that is I have lowered the truck so much that I can't get the engine pullers legs under the front cross member. So I put it in from the back of the chassis, good thing I didn't have the cab on there. I also mated the overdrive tranny with the new motor.

Tell me what you think, I think it looks Sweet! :metal:
Long ways to go though.

Thanks,

Yeah its a 327. Obviously still needs to be rebuilt. I hope it has the steel crank. This is just a mock fitting. See how it all looks and fits.

Re: 67 C20 LB Conversion to C10 SB Fleet.

OK So I posted this question in the general forums but not much input. So PLEASE help me out here. I started with C20 long bed. Had a C10 long bed that i parted out. I wanted a short bed which is now what it is. Well what I mean by that is that I cut down that C10 chassis. So now its short. I am starting to wonder if I should just cut down the C20 frame and keep it with the Truck.

Reasons

It has a matching serial number.

It has 3/16" steel versus the C10 at 1/8", so thicker and stronger.

So i cant help but wonder will it help with handling and drag racing if I have a stiffer stronger frame?

I think I am going to go ahead and do it but I really want to know what all you guys think that have done a ton of fab work, because I am really considered a beginner at best.

If you want to see where the truck is right now just click on my build in my signature.

Thanks for the help.

So would you use the stock frame? I kind of like the idea of matching serial numbers.

I know how that goes, Parts hunting. It took me months with a want add to find the right bell housing.

I had all that stuff. Everything was original on the truck when I got it. Only thing is that I wanted a custom truck and well a C20 wasn't gonna cut it. So I'm not using the stock trans or the rear end, Front end. That's going half ton. I guess you figured that out though. Orig guys probably hate me.

Nice progress. It's a good idea to keep the frame as some states check the vins on the frame from what I've heard....

And plus....now you can sell the other shortened frame if you wanted to :D

Well I disconnected the cab. Found a little more rot. Not more than I thought though. So I had some buddies help me with getting the cab onto the other frame. I couldn't resist just setting the front end on so enjoy the pics. It gives me motivation to keep going even though sometimes it feels like it will never be done.

I would have but the other frame is still in the way. I will be taking it out when I get the other frame stripped.

Did it just for you.

Rolled it Out Today!

Well although not to much looks different I managed to do quite a bit today. I Put the doors back on and then mounted the front clip. I had bought some new hood hinges a while before I bought this truck and decided to use them thinking that I remembered them working well on my old truck. I was wrong. I could not get the hood lined up one bit. It just kept getting worse and worse. So I put the GM ones back on and well you can see the photos of how well it went off. I also rolled the truck out of the garage and the C20 frame into the garage which is pretty hard by your self. I then had to cover up the bare metal from the chop down. The close up photo is of the best seam and has no filler on it. I think it looks good.

PS I sprayed the orange fender with primer, It was to distracting.

Thanks, Yeah its a new process 833 If I remember right, with an overdrive. Should make it drive nicer than the stock LOW gear trans.

No Problem. Actually I believe it came out of an early 80s 2 wheel drive Chevy Diesel. When I got it on a local classified ad it was already out. The problem with these transmissions are that they have a special bell housing. So if you get one then you need to make sure the bell housing is coming with it. I had to hunt for months for mine. Really its a lot like a muscle car trans. Also if you set out looking for one the steel case is the one that you want. Not the aluminum one. The steel one I guess is really tough but not the aluminum one. I would just do a Google search on it see what you can find. The Price was right, I believe including the bell housing I am into mine 150 Bucks, and that's not bad.

Did a search and found the article I read before I bought mine
