Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Been working in it here and there. Gonna try and get cab off before winter hits to hard and i cant get buddies over in the cold.
The list before cab goes on. exhaust, tailpipes and passenger side. detent cable for 700r4 trans cooler lines distributor gasket, cant forget it after it will be easier now then later. Today i got the new diff cover on the 12 bolt, driver exhaust built back to muffler, and my lower shock mount welded on the rearend. I also finally got argon co2 tank for my welder, before now it was just flux and k hated it, i always took things to work and welded them with our 220, well the exhaust and shock mounts woulda been hard to do that with. Much happier now. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psrtzzcq52.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...pse1fohpjc.jpg Side shot of exhaust. I strongly dislike being able to see exhaust hang under the frame. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psffklqq4r.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psqnmve0st.jpg |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Nice well thought out clean build, I agree on the exhaust.

Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
The truck is coming along nicely! I like the exhaust routing. I may have to rethink...or maybe think....about mine.

Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Got some done on the exhaust, got it far enough tonight so i can order the rest of my bends.

Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Got the front clip and bed off today, and tore apart interior to see what all i need.
Heres my garage now, filling up way to fast http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psbxvvqaft.jpg Marked all holes to be filled with some green. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psfgwkm14w.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...pskmvgltl9.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psp4fa5k0e.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psnbepw4hh.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psqzgscawx.jpg |

Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
I really thought when i started this i was gonna completely redo the frame then just swap everything over, seeing as it was a running driving truck with all systems in working order.
Instead i had the might as well disease. Heres a list of those things Rear disc, which leads to new master and proportioning valve. electric fan, needs wirinn harness, along with alternator upgrade headlight relay mod, new lenses with h11 bulbs new plug wires with seperators. new body ground kit new battery cables optima battery Was gonna just swap cab, well decided to fix all rust doors and fendefs have some rot so gonna replace them. which leads me to having to paint the whole thing, i am researching alternatives to actual spray jobs after my current house wont run my air compressor. And this is longer im sure. No real pointto this post other then forme to keep track of what im doing and have done. Today i spent half of it running wires, headlight relays, move steering coloum 2 inches closer to firewall, sanded back of cab, measure for battery cables. So progress just no pics. I am very excited to see the cabon the frame tho. Thanks for looking |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
O i do have one question, does anyone see issues with this valve cover clearence?
I already moved the engine forward 2 inches from factory. I was thinking of a 1 inch body lift but not sure how i would go about raising front bumper after it rolls under the frame so it wouldnt just move straight up. Any ideas, thoughts or concerns are appreciated http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psntfr3odt.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psidpnevdq.jpg |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Well no ideas on body lift unless you can build a bracket to lift the bumper up slightly but would have to notch the bottom of the front of the frame because of it's design, nice progress on the truck, doing it better than just good takes extra time, but worth it. Only concern i see is the wiring so close to the exh manifold on the passenger side, may get hot eventually. Valve covers are close but the engine does move the other way so may not be a concern to the firewall.

Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Use shallower stock type valve covers, move the engine further forward, or lift the cab. I guess you could modify the crossmember and mount brackets to lower the engine. Since you lifted the truck you shouldn't have issues with front axle clearing the oil pan.

I think there is adequate clearence but i dont know, i think body liftis easiest but hate the front bumper situation. Its hard to believe this motor fit fine in 2wd configuration, yet it seems so close in 4wd fashion. Thank you and mud man for your input, i appreciate it. |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
That's because the 2wd bbc mount brackets place the motor about 2-1/2 to 3" further forward. 4wd never came with a big block and all small blocks were further back for better weight distribution.
|
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
I don't really see the problem, so it is close but not hitting. It works.

I agree with mud man, i think im gonna rock it, engine shouldnt flex that much |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
If your motor mounts are new and good quality it won't flex much at all and always goes towards the passengers side. All good. Sure you have more things to take care of.

Like i said in 2wd form i had about another 3/4 of inch at the firewall of clearence and it seemed like i had more at the front of the motor. But im not about to swap everything back over to verify. I moved on i think all is good. |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Alot of progress, finished all wiring, all lights works everything has good grounds.
Also installed my front diff cover from chassis unlimites to match the rear, these things are pure beef. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psdki3gacx.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psdki3gacx.jpg Got the bed and front clip swapped over, front tire is a 35 rear a 33, im pretty sure im going 35s http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psmyrfw7cb.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...psoxjlvike.jpg Also started working on my fuel filler. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps3mw42mfo.jpg |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Fuel filler looks good, the 33's look small and the 35's just right.
|
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Your build looks great, If you haven't found a drive shaft any 1/2 ton with slip yoke should work 208 or 241 tc, if you can find one longer should be around 35.00 to have shortened. On your bumpers with the body lift back just weld a piece of angle on top of your frame and relocate holes for bumper, this way you don't loose any strength if you still want to tow a trailer, the front just cut your frame horns off and move them up an inch or whatever your body lift is. I have an 85 blazer I did it with a 3 inch body lift, bumper looks stock now.
Good luck and great work can't wait to see it finished. |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Nice transformation. Are you going white now on body color? Those big blocks are tight in there. I put one in a 69 k20 I pulled with and it was a sob to get the tall valve covers off it.

Didnt realize its been this long on the build, my wife and i bought our first home march 18th and its been a month of no sleep, new carpet, close a few doors just to open another one, paint all rooms, new bathroom flooring, etc. But we moved in this weekend so in a few weeks i should be back at it. |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
In my opinion you may have turning problems with the 35's. I think they will hit the back of the front fenders. You want to try your turning radius before buying tires.
|
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
I agree on the tires hitting, my last 71 had 35's but needed min of 5"s of lift and were still close, but the 35's sure look better than the 33's.
|
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Could always look for the stock Hummer size tires, they were a 34.5" tire in the size of 315/70/17.
|
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version

I'd like 35's also but am concerned about hitting the fenders as well, my BDS 4" springs give me 12" from the top of the front tire to the top of the fender well with BFG 33's, just not sure its gonna clear the rear of the opening and would hate to spend the coin and find out i have a problem |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Appreciate all the concerns, i already bought the 35s before i even put one on. 500 for like new 35 bfgs wouldnt be hard to sell.
But they clear 100 percent fine, i drove the truck the 22 miles to my new house with no rubbing at all. 35s and 4 inches clear fine fore street driving, now that is with factory rallies so i dont have to worry about offset of aftermarket wheels. I would never go bigger then a 16 on a old 4x4 so 315 70 17 where out of the question. |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
Not sure what lift you have?
I'd like to know the lift size and if you get a chance can you post a pic of the wheel turned and showing a shot of the clearance to the rear of the fender opening? This is for my information to help me decide if i should buy 35's next for my other set of rims. |
Re: 70 GMC 4wd version
looking good. Great progress!
