Troy, what paint did you use for the flat black? how is it holding up in the sun/rain/elements? was it sprayed at once and uniform? Thanks.

BTW Truck is sounding good!

Thanks. The black is eastwood's rat rod black SS and it was sprayed in several pieces. Fenders, hood, cab and doors, bed last. It seams to be holding up well a few scratches from people's kids running around it but not bad... Doesn't sit outside much only at shows! The paint is pretty easy to lay when in good lighting but easy to stripe if in bad lighting.

Well took a short drive tonight and other than a small powersterring fitting leak no problems engine wise BUT I have an issue with my dash lights and blinkers! My dash lights are always on when key is on and my blinkers light up but don't blink! Ideas on where to start?

Check to see if you dont have one of your wires grounded that shouldnt be. If you are running stock guage cluster, they should be frame grounded at the socket.

I had to correct a similar issue with my dome light because I thought one wire was a ground and it wasnt. The two wires going to my dome are orange=constant hot....white=controled hot thru the headlight control switch.

Your turn signals are either a ground issue, or a bulb issue. Sometimes but not always it will be a socket issue. On these old rigs, one bad bulb or socket will muck up the entire blinker system.

Hope that helps, if not I hope you post what the solution was ....... always game to learn a new trouble shooting trick on these builds !!

Oh and on that note:
You know your blinker relay can go bad too yes?
Again, if you are running stock electrical set up, it should be the round silver unit plugged into your fuse box.
Glad you mentioned clicking the turn signals by hand, that is what reminded me of the bad relay !!

It's a brand new harness and relays but I'm not going to rule out relay.

Well took my dad out for a quick spin in the truck today! He loved it... Hammered on it a bit and not real happy with the convertor but it will be fine for a driver. Still have a small leak up front between timing cover and oil pan with the one piece gasket. Don't know what I can do but deal with it. It's so minor I'm not going to worry bout it. Hope someone gets control of gas prices though, $3.89 gal premium sucks!!!

Did you ever get your turn signal issue chased down?

I think my front sockets are the issue. I just manually do it for now lol

Thanks. I knew when I first fired this motor the timing was off an it kicked back a few times and that's not good on them and since have it dialed in. The 5.3 was going to go into this truck with a small turbo on it but have since sidelined that motor for a later project yet to be determined.. I am still deciding if I'm going to take karma out and flog it on the 1/8th mile tomorrow or not. Guess I will see what saterday brings..

Turbo on that 5.3 would be sick in your truck. Honestly contemplated puttin one in mine but decided against it. Imma need all extra money for rest of truck haha and all my other plans. Hows other truck comin along

Re: MY build thread...

Those 5.3's put down some nasty numbers with 8-10 lbs of boost but this motor in my truck runs to well to yank it but maybe next year ill have the 5.3 built and a 400 trans laying around or maybe a 4l80. Other trucks coming along good. Big Red Dog is the build. Check it out. Haven't posted pics of the door yet but one is done the other maybe next week.

Having met and talked to Troy in person, I see some fatal flaws in this logic. See, a lot of us think we are putting an LSx in our builds to get better gas mileage, but it won't work. You may have noticed he mentioned 3 buck plus gas a couple of posts ago. But he also mentioned something about 1/8 mile. IIRC, that is drag racing.

I can tell you from personal experience that an unmolested LS1 ('98 T/A, red even) can make the fuel gauge needle move before your very eyes. All you gotta do is touch the gas pedal.

So I could buy other reasons of switching to an LSx, but fuel economy ain't one.

BTW Troy, I forgot to tell you. The old school hot rodder guy I told you I sent the rear end to was bragging with a dyno sheet for a 427 (LS) he built. Over 700 HP rear wheels.

Dave, owner of The Big Red Dog.

That would be a fun thing to have under my foot! I'm still unsure if I'm racing or not... I think I'll just go watch today even though I would like to know what that ol motor has in it.
